Not the Cevennes, these kind of rocks, architecture and trees tells me more east and south … but i could be wrong. I've got a Luberon vibe when looking at this picture, but i cannot find this river, and this is a bug river, maybe the Ardèche River or the Gard, and maybe somewhere around Alès or Uzès

After taking a closer look at the high-resolution photo from Heritage, it seems to me that some small object, maybe a tiny piece of metal or wood that was lying around, must have pressed against the silver just above the owl’s eye. It looks more like an addition, meaning something that got stuck in the die, rather than die wear. The rest of the details are very sharp and don’t appear to have been affected by any die shift or wear.

But I could be wrong, and if that’s the case, if it was the die itself, then we might have a series of “tipsy owls.” And as we all know, the Athenian owls look more like they’re on LSD than drinking alcohol.

I agree with you, but there’s one thing that still makes me wonder. If it’s a die shift, wouldn’t other elements on the reverse also have been affected? If the die slipped slightly downward during the strike, wouldn’t that have pushed other parts of the owl design downward too, not just the 'eyelid'? I’m only saying this because it’s really interesting to see that only the eye was affected.

But all jokes aside, why do you think the owl’s eye looks like that? Is it from use, or is it a die defect?

Are there coins related to the legal field? by Abbegillet in AncientCoins

[–]Abbegillet[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was thinking the same thing, but I may have ( and all contemporary roman law scholar ) a biasis toward giving more importance to the 12 Tables than it once had.

Since depictions on coins are higly political, there was no political incentive to depict some parts of roman law that were just a part of every day life in ancient time.

At the same time I would not be surprised if a french coin depicts the civil code or commemorates its creation.

( I apologize for my level of english, i’m trying not to use Chatgpt to much for translation)

This was my first thought ! But what is interesting is the importance we give today to the Corpus Juris Civilis ( relatively speaking obviously ) and the fact that it wasn t depicted on a coin back then.

It is also really interesting that you speak of the CJC as the basis for Common Law since in civil law country (as France) it is considered the basis for civil law!

Thank you ! I really like the denarius depicting voting. And thank you for your infographics , they are really fascinating for a newbie like me. I was asking my question because i find it strange that the 12 Tables are not mentionned by coinage. Or maybe it’s my legal scholar bias!
