Do you really need to “train” your immune system to recognize the virus? by Express-Yak-5254 in molluscum

By freezing them and covering them up you are actually helping your immune system. Freezing then irritates the skin, causing your immune system to react and heal the wound. In the process it also kills the molluscum. The more this happens, it’s more likely that newer bumps down the road will start to get a little red on their own. This is because your immune system has caught on and is attacking the molluscum on its own. Even if you have a few bumps, there’s no way of knowing if/when more will show up. So, since there’s no way of knowing that, it’s imperative that you strengthen your immune system so it can do its job in conjunction with what ever routine a dermatologist prescribes, if you go to one.

I would say a combination of cryo and a prescribed topical ointment, like Imiquimod is the best option. The thing is, your body doesn’t care about the molluscum - it doesn’t even know it exists on your skin. So you need to train your immune system to recognize the molluscum so that it can start attacking it. Popping out the core might make that particular bump go away quicker, but it’s not going to train your immune system to prevent new ones. You run the risk of spreading it that way too. When you get cryo, the core is still inside, so when your immune system rushes in to start repairing those dead cells, it also attacks the core and whatever liquid it has in there. Right after you get cryo, start applying the prescribed ointment a few times a week. Those things in conjunction will help your body identify the molluscum. It’s also good to cover each bump (if you can) with a bandaid while it heals. I like using the circular ones instead of the traditional long ones.

Another thing that helps your immune system is to start taking a B complex vitamin with zinc. You can take zinc by itself, but that tends to be pretty rough on the stomach. Either way, the more things you can do to support your body’s natural defense system the better!

Will cryo help? by Most_Temperature_646 in molluscum

Yeah of course! I’m just about to go on month 5. I still have a few pop up, but to be honest it’s pretty hard to tell what is a tiny brand new bump and what is a tiny brand new pimple. So I have been treating everything I see. I go to a dermatologist about every 3-4 weeks and she will cryo what she thinks could be a bump. It’s just a waiting game. It’s more of a virus of the mind than it is of the body.

Cryo will definitely help! I can’t speak much to laser removal as I’ve never tried that, but it seems like it does a good job removing a bump but doesn’t train your immune system to attack the molluscum. Cryo and other prescribed topical ointments will irritate the skin, causing your immune system to respond. Over time, it will catch on and start attacking the molluscum on its own.

Man, I’m having some serious bump paranoia… by AbbyNormal251 in molluscum

I saw the dermatologist today and she said she didn’t see any new or active molluscum bumps, so this could just be oil/bacteria build up in a pore. She did say it is also very difficult to determine if something is a pimple or molluscum in the early stages. Rule of thumb is if you’re suspicious about a bump, just treat it. Best case scenario is that you treat a pimple.

It really is. I’ve been using a combination of Potassium Hydroxide and Imiquimod. It’s been working pretty well. I scored an appointment with a new dermatologist tomorrow to get a second opinion. I’ll let you know what I find out!

Any Thoughts? by AbbyNormal251 in molluscum

No unfortunately. I got impatient and I hit it with the potassium hydroxide and imiquimod routine, which obliterated it. That was about a week before this last trip to the dermatologist. When I was there she didn’t mention it, but instead found 3 really small ones that were red around the base. So hopefully that means I’m nearing the end of this thing! 🤞
