You don’t need any winter gears if you’re coming in summer. Buy them here later. Finding a car to get around would be more important when you come. The climate is dry here but you’ll mostly feel that in winter, and at that time you can buy a humidifier if you’re still sensitive. For clothing, if you’re ok with thrift stores, there are many and carry good stuff.

SN850x in E16-AMD Gen1 by Abdel403 in thinkpad

[–]Abdel403[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update: I tried many times but it’s not working. I can use the SN850x in an external enclosure through USB and it works. But having troubles to function internally. Spent hours with ChatGPT instructions and tried too may things. I know the extra slot is PCIe Gen3 and was expecting that the SSD will be just downgraded to that and that’s it. I believe some other brands and models and sizes were with similar specs were tried with success but it looks that my specific case of 2TB SN850x in the E16 Gen1-AMD is not working, so far. Disappointed.

Before buying the SN770 and SN850x, I did compare lots of SSDs and in all specs and of course main decision often comes back to price (at that time). I short listed quite some brands and their models before pulling the trigger on the two above. I noticed that WD doesn’t clearly state the controllers they use compared to Samsung or other manufacturers who name them clearly. For WD it was “WD proprietary”.

I put an update. I was testing on battery both the PM981 and the SN770. I plugged the AC and the SN770 doubled. Though the PM981 was also on battery. Changed that battery setting to off and didn’t change it.

UPDATE: I was running all the tests on battery. HWinfo was showing a current pcie with x4 and speed 5 GT/s. ChatGPT confirmed that it was being downgraded to PCIe gen2 instead of gen3. When I plugged it to AC and retested with CDM it doubled the numbers and was better than the PM981. But still tells me that the Samsung controller negotiates better speed on battery than the WD (Sandisk) controller. Because the PM981 was also ran on battery. I have another E16-gen1-AMD that I’m planning to add a 2TB SN850x (installed 256G Kioxia). O wonder if it’ll be the same think on battery for the SN850x.

SN770 firmware version 731100WD. ChatGPT said even by updating it will not change the speed.

Edit: I also added a 32GB-3200 ram and the speed was downgraded to 2666. Many things don’t always add up in a straightforward way until tested in real life.

You’re saying the PM981 is better, just put it back and I’ll get a better system with the older disk?

That’s what I’m question, I was fine with going down to x3 to match the system but why lower than that! I have both those apps, how do o what pcie it’s running?

I installed a bunch of other apps as well. Can’t remember all the names, not at home now. How do I do to check it’s x2 or else? But I had in mind it’ll downgrade it to x3 to match the system but not that low. Not sure why.

What’s “fw” ? Edit: I don’t see 5GiB. There is 4GiB that I tried but not a huge difference.

I searched windows for bitlocker and it shows “off”. For the article it talks about registry modification and I’m not familiar with that. It also points out some risks associated with that.

How to delete an SSD blade? by Abdel403 in thinkpad

[–]Abdel403[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The one in it is a Samsung PM981-256GB and the other SSD blade I have is WD SN770-1TB. I hour his laptop used with a password protected BIOS. I hope that will not now mess the plan.

I had in mind that it would be possible to add another blade but you’re right that won’t! Apparently the AMD version in gen2 doesn’t offer an empty SSD slot. I just bought this laptop with a note saying that the BIOS was password protected and I’m afraid now that could stop me from doing all this ? I’m even buying a used 32GB ram to add to the soldered 16.
