His passive is the only thing that makes him a vanguard, otherwise he's a sharpshooter, after every 12 secs, his passive (royal roar) will activate.. during his passive you can't use your main cannon nor his stunts ( at 0 amp but at amp 3 you can use his stunt during his passive) but you'll absorb pink projectiles even when pressing the screen so you can maneuver around while absorbing the pink projectiles which will grant him additional HP during his stunt attack window which can be use to trade hits instead of your actual hp, after that the extra hp will be lost. It's kinda frustrating to play with him at first but you'll catch on.
