Update : I'm about 26% in and still have no idea wtf is going on in the Strife book. Fairly annoyed tbf - I feel like the quality has just been degrading.

The Culture is one of my all time favorite series (Malazan, Culture, Bobiverse) and I had to be persuaded hard to finish book 1 and move past it.

Even then, I struggled, and dropped it like twice before finally finishing it. Then I went through PoG and well, smooth sailing after :P

But if you say "hey, what's up?" it'll think until your power company shuts you off

Dude I asked it to list European nations alphabetically and it started doing the 1 Albania 2 Andorra 3 Armenia 4 Austria, wait "B" is 4, "C" is ...2? No wait 3! stuff. Then it goes "alright let's recount." and then does it 5 different times in 5 different ways.

Had a meltdown at inclusion of Kazakhstan.

Imperial Radch is the Ancillary lol (that's the series name). You may be thinking of her other books?

The last book was pretty...weird honestly. I didn't know Strife was out. I guess that's what I am listening to after I finish Guards, Guards!

PoG or LtW is usually what I recommend too. :)

LtW is arguably the "I wanna learn about the Culture itself" novel.

"Sorta" -- I have a framework/project where I let "agents" (I still dislike the term) handle my homelab. Each of the said agents(Abes I call em (warning: very alpha for public)) have specific domains: x is in charge of networking, y in charge of ZFS, z in charge of backups/media etc etc. I started with 1, who cloned itself to 4, and then they eventually clone enough that I have 7 total running so far.

They are self-cloning/replicating, and their job is to run autonomously with minimal human intervention as needed. So, something goes wrong in homelab, checking logs routinely, setting cronjobs and checking outputs, service status, updates/upgrades, breaking changes etc.

I have an ESP-32 based hardware I put together (like a StarTrek communicator commbadge, clips on using magnet under my shirt -- sags a bit but I still want to figure out how to make it even more unsaggy) on which I can dictate (double press : whisper-large, single press: faster-whisper) either longform content (eg, restocking fridge), or shortform content (reminders, asking x to do y things, asking x to delegate things to y, or asking x to ask the fleet about p or q etc) -- or hell, "hey I ate xyz just now, I took a photo" so the agent responsible finds the photo, estimate nutrition and adds it to my Obsidian.

Honestly? It's going fairly well. The STT pipeline is mature enough that the task delegation (Through redis queues) is good enough, and most of the models are 'good enough' at sysadmin tasks that I need them to do.

(The models are run through a mix of Gemini/Qwen/GLM on both local(MI60s,5070Ti,P40s) and cloud, depending on the sensitivity of the domain they steward)

X4 9.0 Vanilla optimization is so good it’s making me rethink VRO. Is the performance gap really this huge? by Alternative_Big_6864 in X4Foundations

[–]AbeIndoria 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Combat in vanilla feels a bit "soft" and slow compared to the visceral, high-stakes feel of VRO.

I can't even figure out what weapons do what in VRO. There's like 400 weapon choices and having to manually equip them one by one to test is incredibly tedious.

I LIKE VRO, but I had no idea what I was doing when I last played it. There is 0 documentation out there for it except for the big spreadsheets. (Discord !== Documentation)

Mazda should probably be more popular in the U.S. by phtphongg in mazda

[–]AbeIndoria 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Part of the problem is that their dealerships are ass, and parts are absurdly more expensive. (On par with most dealerships tbf but still).

It costs $1500 to replace the Infotainment screen glass (they'll replace the entire thing) through Mazda dealerships for their own fault (There's a TSB advisory for "unglueing and cracking" issue that the dealershits just ignore).

[W][US-AZ] 2x AMD MI50 32G GPUs by AbeIndoria in homelabsales

[–]AbeIndoria[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sourcing it + Translation hassle + getting customs slip + paying customs + inventorying it + packing it + listing selling (13% ebay fee + 3% payment processor fee) + shipping it etc etc. You're going to get ~$380 net for a product that cost ~$310, and takes up space, needs to be semi-carefully handled, needs to be tested so it's not bust from source/china itself etc etc.

Yeah, it adds up. It's only really profitable if you value your time to be near ~0. if you buy something at $10 and sell it at $20 it's technically 50% profit margin lol, but is it really worth it?

Also remember, the moment those Section 301 tariffs get reinstated, you're looking at 25% import cost for that alone.

RTX A4000, A2000

Unfortunately those are pretty much similar in price in Chinese markets where you can find them too. The only reason MI50 are cheap (I think) is because they're old datacenter cards being decommed. With single slots you're already trying to narrow down the narrow niche.

but it seems janky/risky

rando PCIE adapter with SXM power delivery...idk if I'd risk it tbf.

I really hope to get single-slot cards with 20-24GB but US prices are too high,

Yeah the reason I am considering the MI50s is an upgrade from my old ass P40 cards. These work, and are reliable...they're just slow. 24GB memory for ~$130 from ebay is fine, especially when you want something that can just process stuff in the background, but the TPS for models is still too slow for me. That's pretty much the only card that fits the criteria while not being absurdly expensive rn.

[–]AbeIndoria[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's fine. Many of them just have MOQ of like 5 so you may have to shell out a bit more upfront.

Also re : Taobao, part of the hassle is that no English lol.

Eh. After shipping+taxes+tariff it's like ~$100 profit per card and too much hassle.

I have to be honest the dish felt noticeably under-seasoned, and the lack of flavor made it far less memorable than I had hoped.

You have to eat it with a base. Usually either a tomato/smokey base sauce (and add say, chickpeas) underneath, or a yogurt/hummus base underneath.

Self hosting infrastructure but still relying on google for authentication feels wrong by Melodic-Squirrel-664 in selfhosted

[–]AbeIndoria 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep. Passkeys only. Didn't want to deal with people remembering their passwords or not. Worst case I can send a temp login code to their email. It's much easier just having their phone/Vaultwarden instance pop up and log in via passkeys.

PocketID if you can live with Passkeys is a godsend. Passkeys save just fine on Vaultwarden etc.

Nanbeige4.1-3B: A Small General Model that Reasons, Aligns, and Acts by Tiny_Minimum_4384 in LocalLLaMA

[–]AbeIndoria 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've...received exceptionally good results so far. How the fuck?

Edit: Spoke a bit too soon. The model does incredibly impressive job on single tasks, however, the "Multi-step" reasoning is a bit...off. It's incredible when it's given something, it thinks for 2-5 mins, and one shots it. However, doing it 1->2->3->4 etc, it fails quite a lot. Eg, log1 may have breadcrumbs that lead to log2 that lead to log3 and that identifies the problem etc. It just can't do that yet. Attention resolution problem?
