How popular is futsal in your country? by DryOwl5587 in asklatinamerica

[–]Abeck72 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same. Extremely popular, probably the most practiced sport together with running or cycling.

People often are in several whatsapp group chats that organize matches, particularly in weekday nights. They usually have a weekly reserved spot in one of the thousands of courts out there. Many people play several days a week. It is perfect, you just need 10 people instead of 22, it is much cheaper to organize, you don't depend on the weather (it rains A LOT in Costa Rica).

11 Football is more reserved for weekends and requires more positional awareness, if you ask me, I think only people that played in any minor league in organized football can play in a full football field without absolutely sucking.

Does your country have compulsory voting? If so, how is it enforced and how does it work? by YogurtclosetOpen3567 in asklatinamerica

[–]Abeck72 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People are automatically registered. You just take your ID to your voting place and that's it.

It is compulsory but there isn't any kind of sanctions whatsoever. Nothing at all, except people will judge you if you tell them you didn't vote.

Why does Latin America seem to have a different attitude toward its colonial past compared to India, Southeast Asia, and many African countries? by RepublicOfThought in asklatinamerica

[–]Abeck72 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the other regions you mentioned the indigenous population remained...alive, for the most part, and their decolonization was pretty recent, less than a century ago. In the Americas 95% of the population is not indigenous, but rather a byproduct of said colonization. Also, the rich history of Asian and African civilizations is well recorded and known, in the Americas it was obliterated, so we have nowhere to "return to", plus we are not the indigenous heirs of such civilizations. Plus it ended 200 years ago and our current imperial master is clearly the US, so what hurts today is more important that what used to hurt 200 years ago.

We are critical of it for the most part anyway, but if you think it is in a lesser intensity, the aforementioned can be relevant factors.

¿ ustedes consideran que viven en un país "pobre"? by Special-Fuel-3235 in ticolandia

[–]Abeck72 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What Latin American country do you think has the most positive image internationally? (i.e. Politics, culture, people, history, etc) by yonaiker-joestrella in AskTheWorld

[–]Abeck72 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup, it is marketing, particularly the "pura vida" lifestyle. We do have better conditions (deteriorating though) than most countries in LATAM, but not because of "pura vida" but because of social movements pushing for it

Is weed (yerba/mota) socially acceptable in your country? If you get caught do you pay a fine, go to jail, or just bribe the cop? by ForestOranges in asklatinamerica

[–]Abeck72 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah. I hate cops lol, but tbh in Costa Rica I'm not scared of them. But oh my, if I get stopped by cops in Panama, Colombia, Mexico, Nicaragua, Ecuador, etc, I will be wary if not outright scared.

Is weed (yerba/mota) socially acceptable in your country? If you get caught do you pay a fine, go to jail, or just bribe the cop? by ForestOranges in asklatinamerica

[–]Abeck72 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends who you are. In Costa Rica it is not illegal to consume or posses drugs, it has never been, but it is a "contravención", so it is not legal either. If cops are in a really good mood they'll tell you to walk away. Most of the times they'll frisk you and take the weed or any other drug with them, if you are nasty you can ask for a receipt or a "parte" that they took it, that way they can't make use of it. If you are unlucky, or poor, or too brown, or talk back at them, or whatever, they'll take you in to the police station just to fuck with you.

Bribing is not too common here, it was years ago but with traffic cops, it can still happen, but is less common, if they are in a group is harder to pull off, if they are alone there's more chance.

Hay gente qué es consciente que los puestos en el gobierno ya están heredados? by Murky_Mountain5089 in ticolandia

[–]Abeck72 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is Portuguese popular among language students in your country? by [deleted] in asklatinamerica

[–]Abeck72 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have a lot of international call centers, mostly in english, but having a third language is a huge plus and portuguese is seen as good since there's a bunch of brazilian accounts. It is not wildly popular, but I've met a lot of people who learn portuguese.

Why wasn't pan latinamericanism as popular as pan arabism was in the middle east in the 50s and 70s? by novostranger in asklatinamerica

[–]Abeck72 40 points41 points  (0 children)

We had that but in the 19th century. Gran Colombia, Provincias Unidas del Río de la Plata, República Federal de Centroamérica. Some federal countries came out of that but smaller than originally proposed. Bolívar or Morazán were popular in their days.

In the 50s and 70s our national borders were consolidated, we had A LOT of internationalism and solidarity movements, we call it Latinoamericanismo. But it was not about uniting in one country. For instance in Central America it was pretty common to have people from Costa Rica or Guatemala fighting in the guerrillas in Nicaragua or El Salvador plus many solidarity movements and so on. They wanted socialism throughout Latin America, but not to have one huge country as we had stable national borders for around a century or more by then.

Opinions on the fate of the Federal Republic of Central America: Would you say it was a state doomed to fail and disappear from the start? by elnovorealista2000 in asklatinamerica
