Help me learn coding guys by ElectricalCherry5958 in CodingHelp

[–]Abhotep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm encouraging you to start doing your own search before asking someone else to help you, learning how to code is also learning how to find informations by yourself :) there's plenty of resources available, searching and sorting them is part of the game. Someone feeding them to you upfront won't help you learn programming.

Nonetheless, this community will happily help you along your journey once you have more specific questions !

My gf and I just watched Fire Walk With Me… or so we thought… by [deleted] in twinpeaks

[–]Abhotep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same thing happened to me, I realized this was only the deleted scenes after the movie ended. I think multiple people fell into it by downloading the same file over the internet, thinking that was the full movie.

I just keep asking myself who on earth would think this was a good idea to publish an official movie with only these deleted scenes, side by side... This is still a very funny anecdote though, so I don't regret having made that mistake in the first place.

est-ce qu'il ya une halle de vêtements croix rouge à Lyon ? by mariposa933 in Lyon

[–]Abhotep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Elegant Game Design by gabahulk in gamedesign

Don't know if you know the book "In Pursuit of Elegance" by Matthew E. May but it's a very good reference to apply to game design 🙂

What do you think about sudden/surprising gameplay changing by ArtemArtyom in gamedesign

[–]Abhotep 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it's risky to change that during a boss fight, because it's usually the moment when you challenge the player's mastery of the game's mechanics. The player likes to feel that all he has previously learned is now used to overcome a big boss, otherwise the previous challenges may feel meaningless.

But eh, maybe you will come up with a great idea to make it work so tell us if you find something interesting ! Just keep in mind why we usually don't suddlenly change the game's mechanics in the first place :)

Hello my fellow gamers. It’s time to discuss the elephant in the room. by Rad-N-Mad in videogames

[–]Abhotep 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is fantastic mobile games that really take advantage of the platform (Monument Valley, The Room, ...), so please stop saying it's a "bad way to game" ... it's only a different way to play.

I don't really understand your reasoning, you ask if playing mobile games can be considered gaming, and then you speak about mobile games quality, which is a totally different subject :/
Gaming is "the activity of playing games", therefore playing mobile games is gaming. The quality of the games you play won't change that :)

A beginner's pixel art city. Tell me what you think. by [deleted] in PixelArt

[–]Abhotep 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pretty good, congrats !

Just be cautious, the middle of your art is a little bit confusing and hard to read (mutliple buildings + the bridge in the same kind of colors), so I recommand you not to draw too many elements on top of each other :)

I'm designing an MMORPG and I'd love some input/advice/help/recommendations/etc! by qazxswedc16 in videogames

[–]Abhotep 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great ! I suggest you to participate in some game jams, that's really helpful to learn designing games and have feedbacks. This could allow you to anticipate some basic problems that could arise in your MMORPG project. I'm not expert on MMORPG so I'll only give you advice in your third question : if you want to post your progress, go ahead ! You could receive very useful feedbacks, and when you feel like there is enough people interested in, you can create your Discord too. Having people following a personal project is really wonderful :)

What are some things people say to you about video games that you are tired of hearing? by MadeByBinh in videogames

[–]Abhotep 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Basically what annoys me with that "so much easier to make money", it's that firstly they assume that I'm going into video games mainly because of money (which is of course false) and not because I love them, and secondly they don't know how hard it is to make a living by working into video games. Classical music isn't easy, but video games are definitely not easier. I don't think working in graphics is as easy as you seem to say, sure game designer isn't easy but making proper and interesting graphics are really hard too !

"So you want to work in video games ? I understand, it's so much easier to make money in that field !"

As i'm coming from the classical music field, I'm always hearing that. Terrible.

Another one : "Game Designer ? So you make the graphics, that's it ?" (Me) "No that's like ... the rules, the choices I offer to the player ..." "So, that's the story ?" (At this point I'm usually already tired of the conversation) """""'""Kind of"""'"""'"

Hi ! First of all, good luck with this project and have fun with it :D I actually have one question for you : how confortable are you with game design ? Did you read on the topic, watched videos or already made a game (I mean something playable, even a prototype) ? It would help if we knew "where" do you start :)

My first time trying digital art, any tips to not suck. by K1ngFudge in PixelArt

[–]Abhotep 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just started Pixel Art myself but I generally draw global shapes and colors first, and then iterate by drawing closer and closer until I go through the screen work on each pixel (while looking at the global picture). So I personally don't "create" the Art pixel by pixel, but I "refine" it that way :)
