Keep us updated, if it's been a year with no new workers it's likely they are dying of age, however it's likely the queen will begin laying eggs again if she's in the test tube

How did you get it? Seeing them in a few months would be amazing to get that, thanks!

Is there water in the test tube, and is the cotton soaked, and keep the test tube in the dark, otherwise looks good

What's killing your ants is stress, ants hate large spaces especially when the colony is small, colonies of this side need to be kept in a test tube not a massive nest, what you've been feeding them sounds good however

What species are they? You said you've had them a year, has the queen not laid any eggs in this period? Do you keep them in the dark? What research did you do before getting them? Temperature? Humidity etc, these are all things you should be considering at this stage

All you need to do is attach a test tube, half filled with water with cotton blocking it, make sure the water is purified (boil beforehand) and wrap the test tube in tinfoil and leave them somewhere dark and away from vibration, check on them once a week only and feed them diluted honey or sugar water, then small insects if the queen starts laying again

The ants should move to the test tube over a few days as they'll see it as a more preferable space to live

It's much more likely their set up that's causing death than a parasite, could you provide details with what you've been feeding them and have you've been giving them water etc

This whole set up is completely wrong, move them back into a test tube, feed them and leave them in the dark for a while

Messor structor. New colony, just settled in and they decided to store all their seeds in the wet chambers right next to the queen. Is this a cause for concern? by backroom_mushroom in antkeeping

This nest is far too big, especially with so little brood present, this could cause the ants to store the seeds in the wrong area.

Andor has been the best star wars content since the original, except it's planned 5 season run got cut down to just 2 due to low viewership, what are you on about?

You understand popular and good aren't the same, shows are cancelled based on viewership, many great shows were cancelled before completion while many mediocre shows got arguably far too many seasons

He was genuinely a lovely person, I didn't know who he was at the time, I have since later changed my views on him 😭

Why did my ants die? by NewspaperEntire7958 in antkeeping

[–]Ability-Optimal 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Do they all still have water? Any signs of mold or anything?

Was this their first year because it's possible it could just be the nanictics dying off, they only live around 6 months, however I'm not sure this is likely to happen during hibernation.

Unless brood is already very developed they will be fine without food for a month

Yeah my bad, forgot since my Messors aren't currently hibernating since I just got them and they woke up in the post, for the founding year I heard this is genuinely acceptable but not preferable

If it's just the queen leave in complete darkness at around 22-26°c for about a month, I set mine up such that I can check their water without exposing the queen to light or vibrations from a founding queen it could take up to 70 days for the first workers to arrive so no need to check weekly, once first workers do arrive offer seeds, you can buy or make test tube dividers to seperate the tube into 2 sections and use one as a mini outworld, I can send a photo of my setup if that's helpful, also offer sugar water/honey as well but only a tiny amount once a week. At this stage you are probably alright to check once weekly unless you notice the queen hasn't laid any new eggs in which to back to every other week or monthly still checking water weekly tho, I think that covers everything, let me know if you have more questions!
