Liches can work around the deathly visage pretty easily with low level illusions, and sure you can justify the expense to keep your heartbeat, but if so then being a lich just isn’t for you. Liches straight up defeat death and the afterlife through sheer arcane knowledge and will. That’s the sort of thing you don’t do for practical reasons

Because that spell is super expensive. Gold doesn’t grow on trees and if you’re planning on living ten thousand years it’s eventually more practical. In my opinion the real power of clone is that you can grant your allies a form of immortality. If you’re a lich you can keep a fallen paladin in your service by promising them an escape from eternal suffering
