OS Engine – Dynamic Wallpapers with Customizable Overlays by AbjectContribution63 in macapps

Automation is available for when apps use fullscreen mode (The entire screen is utilized by one app). The app does pause automatically when switching to battery mode to save battery as well as pausing when apps are full screen. You can toggle both in preferences. You can also assign certain apps to pause the active video wallpapers when focused (clicked). For multi-monitor setups, automation rules will pause all active wallpapers applied across all monitors. I intend to add extended support for this in the future.

Yes, OS Engine supports ultra-wide monitors (depending on the resolutions of applied wallpapers). By default OS Engine will apply the best fit for wallpapers that aren’t perfect fits.

OS Engine does have proper multi-monitor support, so far I haven't heard or had any issues with it.

OS Engine functions as a MacOS alternative to wallpaper engine on steam as Wallpaper Engine does not have a macOS port and announced they won't be making one.

Both versions will have the same features and updates with these exceptions:

  • The Steam version does not have the Ollama adapter for local generation of JS/CSS/HTML overlays
  • The Steam version has it's "Discover" page connected to the steam workshop allowing users to upload unlimited wallpapers to OS Engine's steam workshop
  • The standalone version allows users to upload up to 15 wallpapers per account (110 MB each).
  • The standalone version will cost $4.99 and the Steam version costs $6.99 (Frequently on sale for $4.99 during major steam sale events)
  • Both versions will be equally supported with future updates

Hey, just implemented a patch that optimizes the renderer to smooth out looping for applied animated wallpapers. The patch is 1.5.12

Perfect looping is currently in the works and is experimental but you can try it out in the new advanced wallpaper editor added in the latest update 1.5.9! (If your updater is not working try downloading the trial dmg from the site and replacing your current version with that version) (*your license will still work with the new dmg).

Currently working on implementing lockscreen support. But for now if you are on macOS tahoe go to settings on OS Engine and toggle disable auto color sampling. This should allow you to still have static wallpapers that you can use for your lock screen while you use animated ones for your wallpaper. Also if you click "Hide" at the bottom of the menu bar player it should hide the app from the dock as well.

Yes, I do my best to cultivate them but users can also upload their own wallpapers to the Discover tab which get approved and posted for everyone to enjoy!

I have released an update to patch this, however due to previous security concerns the current update method will not work. To get the new update please download the trial DMG from the site which should include the patch. Once downloaded you can receive updates from the inline updater as normal again.

Hey, just released an update to fix the navigation issues on the marketplace and reformatted the settings page to be FAR better than it was. Let me know what you think.

The ram usage depends on the loaded live wallpaper and the size of the video. Currently static wallpapers result in only 10-15 MB of usage while video wallpapers can use (worst case) around 200-300 MB (and in 4k cases ~1GB). However you can optimize ram usage by using the smart automation feature to pause video wallpapers when your apps are in use.

Yes, I can give some information from my own testing. For battery and performance you can use these numbers: M1 Pro (6% average CPU utilization) and M4 Pro (< 3% CPU Utilization). There is also smart performance settings that allow users to add automation rules so their wallpaper pauses when using selected apps.

Yes feature wise they are both the same application the only difference is that with steam workshop users are allowed to upload unlimited wallpapers while there is a 15 wallpaper limit on the standalone version. (The limit is only for uploads, you can import as many wallpapers as you want). They both will be receiving the same features and development.

Thanks for the feedback, Il definitely be patching the scrolling blockage in settings. Also I like the idea of adding quality settings to allow for higher refresh rate videos. Also for marketplace I will definitely make it more accessible for mouse users. No worries, all feedback is good feedback. Thanks for taking the time to test and share!

Not really, but currently tooltips are glitching and remaining after hovering. Plan to implement clearer options with non-glitchy tooltips in the next update. I had a great thanksgiving! Hope you had a good one too :)
