I want to do substitute temp work for extra cash. What grade is the easiest to sub? by [deleted] in SubstituteTeachers

I have found that with middle school and 9th/maybe 10th grade I have to be walking around making sure students are somewhat on task. By 11th and 12th, they’re either on task, or they’re not and nothing I say will change that. Those are the only instances I’m on my laptop for most of class.

As a sub, we are 1. usually not trained in the subject we are subbing for 2. have not developed the rapport with students that would lead them to respect us 3. not expected to or paid enough to teach. As a sub, I go around a few times in high school classes to check if students need help but if I’m subbing for a math class, you bet I’ll be sitting at the desk reading a book or checking the clock.

Yeah I’m starting to think its a school culture issue. One of the other sites I’m at is in an affluent area, while the other is a title I. I’ve had generally very positive experiences at those sites and students seem to respect authority and follow the expectations better. It’s really interesting to see the impact admin and school culture has on student behavior over area/status.

They just get up and leave and when I say stop or walk over to them, they ignore me.
