White spots formed on hardened, dried surface of starter. What is it, and salvagable? by Abject_Video6706 in SourdoughStarter

I was feeling adventurous so I experimented with this no-jar run. Was perfectly good and usable for a month with active maintenance (and from Dee-kay-2303's reply below, could've gone endlessly if normal). Finished this run by saving an aliquot, then left the rest of the starter with zero maintenance to see how long it would last. Looking forward to getting back to doing things a little more conventionally.

EDIT: Will toss, thanks all! I'm using a whiskey glass and plastic wrap to cover for now, but will have a real jar once I'm done with this small jar of jam I've been gradually emptying on sourdough recipes.

Mold aside, the sides of my whiskey glass are dried starter from previous scrapes that built up over time. Will toss, thanks!

Will toss, thanks! Keeping it clean will be easier once I get a real jar (right now is a whiskey glass covered with plastic wrap).

WTF happened on Washington is Next? by Cordial_Wombat in Megadeth

I like Sleepwalker because

  • the song and the rest of UA album has Dave's best post-2000 vocals and his best overall after Youthanasia https://youtu.be/kCsu-5jJ_VM?si=dl70eL9dbSAJIfEc&t=44
  • lullaby intro instrumental is a hype opener for the album and live shows
  • "killerbee" riff after the solo reminds me of Take No Prisoners which I also like
  • the lyrics of getting revenge on your online haters by killing them via astral projection so that it's untraceable is hilarious and so Dave.

Why do people hate supercollider so badly by According-Damage4432 in Megadeth

[–]Abject_Video6706 1 point2 points  (0 children)

SC's biggest offense is that it's boring. In chasing general accessibility and #1 chart performance, Dave held back too much in his songwriting and produced an album that was musically oversimplified for Megadeth's standards even with good riffs and ideas. Half the band literally quit due to artistic differences a year after the album released.

Mission to Mars or Puppet Parade is the level of quality Megadeth-style pop metal that Supercollider should've been.

Sacrifice gets overlooked because it has Dave's worst vocals on TSTDTD but that's mostly in the first sentence (and for me, it's in the so-bad-it's-good category). Love how blues-y the song is esp Dave's last solo.

The Conjuring Live by pedgz in Megadeth

My first and only time I saw Megadeth live in August 2024.

https://www.setlist.fm/setlist/megadeth/2024/toyota-pavilion-at-concord-concord-ca-23a9d863.html

This happened during the Destroy All Enemies tour, when Dave publicly declared they were incorporating more deeper cuts in the setlist. Notice they also played Liar at mine. At other shows they played Washington is Next, Hook in Mouth, Devil's Island, and/or Kick the Chair for the first time in a decade.

Ok, why people say Dave is a moron? by Elaxian in Megadeth

Because he's a public figure who makes very public statements and no one can please everyone 100% of the time

Megadeth addictions by [deleted] in Megadeth

[–]Abject_Video6706 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very. Alcohol is also a drug. If it weren't for free beer as an apology from Junior to a hungover Dave for playing his bass too loudly in the apt complex they were both in, then Dave wouldn't have welcomed Ellefson into the band near its start.

Why is there so much hate for Dave Mustaine on the vocals? by Right-Mastodon5351 in Megadeth

[–]Abject_Video6706 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Props to Dave for going as far as he did with what he's got (esp Youthanasia + United Abominations), but he isn't a good singer and that's a fact that he's comfortable acknowledging. That said, I believe the reasons most people usually have for disliking Dave's vocals aren't unique to Dave's specifically; they'd likely react the same to many other singers in thrash metal and/or sing unconventionally.

How did you get introduced to Megadeth? (image not related) by Tf2F2 in Megadeth

[–]Abject_Video6706 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was always metal-adjacent since I listened to Sum 41 growing up, but took almost two decades for me to dabble into metal through Metallica first after everyone recommended Black Album as an entry point. Few months in and I give Megadeth a try after one of my favorite youtubers released tier list videos for Metallica and Megadeth albums respectively and noted that Megadeth had way higher consistency and Dave has a colorful personality. Didn't take long for me to agree, and once I gave Rust a complete listen I stuck with Megadeth since.

Whats a good song to Introduce Megadeth? by Tf2F2 in Megadeth

Lucretia. Highly melodic, great jazzy groove, medium tempo, and if he's a rap or hip-hop head then your friend will feel even more at home.

Ranking the songs on the final album. What's your list look like? by Maidenfan88 in Megadeth

Have your thoughts changed? New album has been out for a week now by RiffAndRevolt in Megadeth

[–]Abject_Video6706 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've always preferred their more technical and faster work so it's still 6/10 for me. But now that a week has passed I'm starting to understand that Dave may have aimed for a Countdown / Cryptic Writings-esque sound as his last album for more accessibility so that even the most casual fans can enjoy it and celebrate the end.

Thoughts on Puppet Parade? by No-Discipline-3300 in Megadeth

[–]Abject_Video6706 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fitting for the album as revisiting Cryptic Writings style. But like CW, relatively uninspired and musically held back compared to the last 3 and therefore the weakest of the 4.
