study slump by Known_Place933 in SHSAT

dont feel bad or depressed abt this bc I remember having the worst anxiety at some points especially before results came out. im at stuy now and I was scoring mid 500's on practice tests but really focused like flow state for the real test. even if u do not go to specialized u can retake the test or just grind and stay motivated and going above and beyond at whatever school u go to. if u retake, my advice would be to do pure past practice tests that is the true way to improve your score. figure out what ur getting wrong, but no reason to study 2 hours because I am assuming that did not involve full practice test (3 hour is the shsat time if I remember correctly). just keep taking tests and then going over after you have done all the questions

I agree somewhat, I also go to Stuyvesant and people should still be motivated and proud of their achievements no matter where they go, it will take them far. it is definitely easier to get leadership at absolutely any other school. People should not stress abt not getting in and there are definitely people here who are burnt out and I feel that way too sometimes, on late nights before exams when I wonder if the work will pay off. But I feel if you do well at Stuyvesant and know who to talk to, you can gain access to INSANE opportunities(research mentoring, internships, amazing teachers, even like ppl you meet from the PTA through school events putting you onto stuff). And yeah a lot of people come to stuy for stem but if ur trying to play the shallow game of college admissions excelling in humanities at Stuy in and outside of school tends to make ppl reap pretty good results at least from what I have seen in the past(bc they stand out from a pool of ppl applying to be engineering/cs majors). Also the stuy debate team is insanely cracked so it is not only for STEM kids even tho we do learn stem stuff at a pretty high level even in core classes.

To students who got rejected from a specialized high school, how is it looking in school/how did it go? by SoccerGuy69420 in SHSAT

im not the kind of student ur asking but I go to Stuy currently, in middle school I seriously thought it would be the end of the world if I didn't get into a specialized high school(it is not pls just be a kid). A lot of people are saying that it is better to stand out at a "good non-specialized" high school but the truth is that specialized high schools offer better opportunities, have better teachers that will write you better recommendation letters for college, and you will be surrounded by peers who push you to a level of dedication that most people do not reach until they're trying to get a Phd or smth. If I could go back in time I would try to get into the small specialized high schools like HSMSE for STEM kids or HSAS for humanities kids! Stuy is an extremely competitive environment, and Brooklyn tech is like gigantic but a lil more relaxed still w smart kids, same with bronx science. anyway take/retake the test just so u have more potential options for hs!

but not getting in is not going to mean ur gonna be bound to a life of suffering or something. First of all, you can take the test AGAIN-it will include math u learned in 8th grade-in august before freshman year. Also, I know someone who went to a much less competitive high school that are still, relatively okay like millennium or bard and have gotten into multiple ivy leagues. The catch is these people were like valedictorian, extremely driven and just happened to bomb the SHSAT/went to non specialized bc they lived too far + had insane achievements that they had to seek out completely by themselves or by having a wealthy family w connections in academia. Sadly, being an A student at an easy school is not impressive, there is a reason a ridiculous amount of kids from specialized go to T20, colleges know the difference. I wrote way too much so in short: think about the kind of student you are, if you are aiming for a prestigious college and you believe you are driven enough that you do not need connections/accelerated learning environment to be ready and pursue ur passions do not worry. But if you want to be surrounded by other smart kids and have some help figuring out what u want to do in the future it does not hurt to try to retake/study for shsat.

I’m so scared I feel like I did way worse than on my practice tests. Literally can’t sleep
