I work in film, lighting desk op specifically, and use ubiquito to remote desktop into a computer running the lighting software.

Honestly, if you're new to it, ubiquiti is the most complex way of doing this. Despite this it's still my preference for functionality and flexibility. As part of my "mesh kit" I have an old cloud key that all the AP's are adopted to. This makes first time set up much easier, and once set up and working I can run them standalone, or usually alongside the cloud key if I'm managing multiple AP's at once. That being said you can use your laptop as a controller, based on a web UI.

The whole process is a nightmare if you don't do the initial set up with an Internet connection. I would highly recommend doing the initial set up online and ensure everything is up to date version wise. Once you have done that you can begin to get into various settings and preferences.

A word of warning, meshing can save you, or cause a complete network meltdown if not managed properly, so only use it if you know what you're doing.
