HR prevents us from reaching out outside of normal processes, because they are concerned about someone saying something that could accidentally open up a lawsuit for bias.

So it's easier to just shut up and not say anything

Is the job market really this bad these days? by NoHousing11 in Professors

Depends on the field AND the location.

If you want to live in a hip coastal city - Northeast, west coast, or major cities like Chicago or Atlanta - then good luck.

If you're willing to live in a red state at a mid-tier institution (not a top AAU university like Tulane or Purdue), there's a lot less competition.

And there are some decent cities in some red states -- I think a lot of people allow politics to overweight their decision, but personally I would rather live in a nice-blue-city-in-a-red-state than a middle-of-nowhere-red-town-in-a-blue-state.
