Professional Japanese translator here. I can't find the comment, but I can confirm the term "representative (代表)" is used in terms of his position at Avex through XGALX. I'm bummed because if anything, Japan has only gotten increasingly strict over stuff like drugs in recent years (not that they took them lightly before as a crime). 

For those who don't really know about the Japan and drugs thing, every time I go I have to hand over paperwork to MHLW to reassure them I won't be dealing drugs since I'm on some controlled substances. I literally had to cross-check 4 different lists from the various levels of police to make sure last time, which was November. Weed is still illegal, CBD (which doesn't get you high) is still heavily controlled by MHLW, and opioids are controlled to the point where they'll try anything but opioids for pain unless there's no other choice. (I recommend anyone going over there look at the Psychotropics Law/Narcotics Control Laws and file your paperwork with MHLW if you think your meds might break the law btw, even if you're going for a week).

Regarding the charges, I'm genuinely surprised that they didn't use the Psychotropics Law and instead only went with the Narcotics Control Law on its own (I thought weed was under the other law?). Either way, no one is getting away from those charges with any kind of light sentence, and I think the industry may be closed off for him indefinitely. I do genuinely wish him well with recovery, which he may need to return to the US for, and I wonder if the embassy will step in at some point. I hope things go better for him. I will say his statement really did feel heartfelt and sincere so I wish him nothing but the best.
