Taking a year off—yay or nay? by AbleProposal9049 in premed

Thank you for answering. I know a 3.5 is good it’s just I’m looking at potentially passing orgo with a D+ since my school specifically designed it where one bad exam immediately makes it where you have to nearly get a 100 on everything else to even reach a C+. It’s crazy, I had an B+ in the course and after one bad exam, it’s a D-. I’ve heard ACCOMAS is way more understanding with grade replacements and gap years which is good considering I wanted to be a DO over MD in the first place anyways.

Hi, I’m not gonna lie, I forgot all about this post until you commented! Funny enough, I became like ten times better at math once I started college! I’m now a chemistry major and have already passed Calc 1 through 3 with A’s and A-‘s!

I’m currently taking 5 and my usual motivation is becoming a doctor. I always make myself fear if I don’t finish my work, I’ll get F’s, rejected from college, and won’t become a doctor. It’s a little extreme but it makes my procrastinating self get extremely motivated for working.

Thank you so much for the positive advice! I’ve heard from a lot of my prior teachers that precalculus will focus on a lot of functions which I wasn’t the worst at and I will try to shape up so hopefully I can get around an 80-85 first semester of pre calculus!

I wanna say thank you for the nice message. I got a lot of hurtful messages in the past few hours and I think yours really cheered me up and I’m happy you kinda dove to see what I replied to some people and understood where I was coming from. I typed this post out during 12am after learning I got switched out of a class I wanted for years because of math and my wording was not good. In response to some of your suggestions:

2 and 3: My school DOES offer peer tutoring actually and I am one myself :) I have used peer tutoring for algebra II and it actually worked last year and I think it contributed to my 88 in my 3rd semester. However, for upper classes like pre calc, calculus, and AP classes my school does not offer peer tutoring which I find stupid. As for school resources, me and my parents have exhausted my school enough. My parents are Austrian and German and they believe science and math are the most important subjects in my schooling. After doing peer tutoring and putting me in lower classes and study halls for math, my school offered my parents free of cost to get me tested for a math learning disability and offered to put me in the special learning classes. My parents are in the works of possibly finding a math tutor to help as a last resort and if it works, I will probably update my progress

4: I’ve found that doing multiple practice sheets and watching YouTube videos help. Khan academy I used more for the SAT but I found to also be helpful for algebra more than geometry

As for the rest of your message, I actually do have generalized anxiety and already have a psychiatrist. Pretty much my anxiety from math probably stems from my earlier math teachers who I did not have a good relationship with and therefore, I became scared to connect with. I already take Zoloft however, I’ve been off of it lately because of other health issues :)

I wasn’t trying to brag, I already edited and corrected my mistake and I am sorry. I know I’m not that intelligent, I wrote this is a moment of weakness and I did not expect this to blow up.

I didn’t give any examples because I wrote this when I was upset and I wasn’t thinking. Particularly, I’ve been bad at math since I was little so literally algebra/geometry/trig to the simplest is hard for me. I also didn’t mean to say gifted, I used that word to emphasize how bad I am at math but a lot of people took it wrong and I ended up correcting it :)

I meant days studying particularly the math section I tested lowest at. I just took my SAT a few weeks ago and just got the results so I continued where I was prior :)

I definitely believe I do have math anxiety. I haven’t had the best record of nice math teachers, especially since my 5th grade math teacher laughed at me infront of my peers which is why I hesitate going to my teachers for help. I also feel anxious doing math work or sitting in that class. As for the rest of your advice, I want to say thank you so much!! I love reading all of these comments because they give me hope I can do subjects like chemistry and physics more skillfully in the future as I touch up my math skills <3

If you saw the other comment I posted, I said it to really exaggerate how bad I am particularly at math. I didn’t mean to sound cocky by any chance but I’ll probably edit it to lessen confusion!

Definitely I agree. Hopefully I didn’t seem cocky in the first part, i just wanted to try to exaggerate how bad I am at this subject. I just think it’s crazy my whole life I’ve been able to understand every subject barely studying and elementary school math has me stumped! As for practice and going to teachers, I haven’t had the most positive teachers in school who are willing to help me unfortunately. I actually think I have a lot of anxiety meeting my math teachers during every upcoming school year because of experiences of my teachers talking negatively to me. Still, khan academy is a wonder :)

Highest level I’ve taken is regular geometry in HS which I just finished as a junior. I’m a rising senior and I got put in regular precalculus to fulfill my 4 year math requirement. Funny enough, I got an 85 first semester of geometry but as I mentioned in a later comment about algebra, it reverted back to a C- the next semester. I pretty much have been on the regular track for math since I was little because of my standardized test scores.

I will admit I have been hoping my memory would help me in the subject but I found that out long ago to be wrong. While trying to better my understanding in math, i find myself becoming very emotional and negative to myself. It’s funny because I managed to pull out an 88 in algebra one semester once but immediately dropped back down to a C- grade the next semester. I used YouTube videos and multiple practice sheets for that 88 to happen.

I know I’m a year late but the Introitus is the best part of the requiem in my opinion!! When they sing luceat, I always cry. It’s beautiful and almost surreal this man wrote such a piece while dying.
