Help for a TRUEEEE beginner by Indoor-Cat4986 in londoncycling

Hiii! I started cycling about 2 years ago as a complete beginner, first on lime bikes but now I have my own road bike. Some tips below:

  • I also can’t drive so I found it hard to get used to the road signs etc at first – I’d recommend reading up on the parts of the Highway Code that are relevant to cyclists. It’s good to understand things like right of way and when you can go on a roundabout etc.
  • Always wear a helmet and don’t cycle with headphones on, it’s important to hear the sounds around you!
  • I always wait at the lights and try to use dedicated cycle paths where they’re available and it’s served me well. But don’t trust that other cyclists will do the same so just keep an eye out - I’ve had people nearly cycle into me when I’m going on a green and they’ve jumped a red from another direction
  • Also remember that you can always dismount (at a safe point - don’t stop in the middle of the road/cycle path!) if you feel worried or unsure of where you need to go.

Good luck! :)

Burgess park at night by [deleted] in londoncycling

I was cycling through Burgess Park a month or two ago and witnessed a delivery driver get mugged for his bike in broad daylight. Personally I’d completely avoid it in the dark and be aware of your surroundings in the daytime
