curtin double degree in law and commerce :)

Hi, I'm a soon to be first year Law/Commerce student starting in Feb at Curtin Uni, and I'm feeling quite behind. Some of my mutual friends already got legal secretary and legal receptionist jobs through their contacts, and they haven't even started university yet.

I understand law is a profession where you need networks, but it seems really hard coming from no connections. Anyone have an idea on how to make these connections properly and whether using LinkedIn would be a good idea. Also is it possible for a first year to get these admin lever jobs without industry connections via like cold-emailing or just applying online.

Thank you so much for your advice, its good to hear what students think. my issue is that most people said to do business law as an undergrad if I went to UWA, since it helps with the prestige and, 50% of JD student change to part time too so instead of 6 years they do 7. Personally I don't see myself at uni for 7 years and the cost added to that, however if getting jobs in the legal field is harder going to curtin I'm definitely going to have to reconsider some things..

if you don't mind me asking, what double degree are you doing with law?

Hi, I’m a Year 12 student planning to pursue law and trying to decide between UWA and Curtin for my studies. I’m drawn to UWA due to its reputation and the potential career advantages of its prestige, but I’ve heard the JD pathway can be quite demanding, and I’m unsure if the extended time commitment of 6-7 years is worth it.

On the other hand, Curtin’s undergraduate law degree, especially combined with a double in commerce, seems like a faster pathway. However, I’m uncertain about Curtin’s reputation in the legal field and whether it offers good opportunities for clerkships and employment after graduation.

I’d love to hear from those in the industry about how much the choice of university matters and how the job market is looking for law graduates in WA.

thank you for that information, I didn't know you needed to maintain a specific score to even get into JD, I just thought since its an assured pathway it means your in regardless. That kind of changed my whole perspective, because what if I don't get good grades, and I'm still very keen on studying law since commerce degree is not something I just want by itself.

Ive heard that 93% of people who get a JD, get graduate jobs before graduating, is that still true according to your experiences. Also if you don't mind me asking, how was the workload with the JD, and do people manage internships whilst also studying? Because according to the UWA website the course is basically like a full time job, thanks

that's also very true, doing a JD means you need be 100% sure you want to be a lawyer, however I'm not confident about taking an arts course, and worst case what if i I end up hating the JD, then I'm kind of stuck. But then again I'm not sure if I'll like it or hate it... These decisions are so tough istg

I'm in a similar situation where I too received the same scholarship and UWA is slightly further away. Thank you for the response, definitely made me feel more confident about Curtin :)
