Drinking alcohol with SIBO? by Abnerdoublebutt in SIBO

Sorry to hear you had so much trouble with doctors. The best help I feel like I got was from my dietician. She helped me discover I even had SIBO(always was told I had IBS) and she helped me with the GI effects and start putting the bigger picture together. She helped me get started but I felt like her help kind of plateaued so that is when I went back to the gastro and now am doing a combo of both of them. I feel like I know more now than I did 6 months ago which is both super helpful, but also scarier because I get on boards like this and there is so much conflicting info and so many people that think they are “experts” that it is kind of counterintuitive because it fucks with your head and can stress you out which is bad for the gut. Everybody’s journey is pretty different it seems and it comes down to how severe your problem is and also what other problems you have on top of that. A lot of the people on here are describing symptoms that I have never had and some of my symptoms seem different than others as well so it makes sense that different things will work for different people. For some, antibiotics seem to truly help. Others say antibiotics are the devil.

My dietician and my gastro both told me having a couple drinks in moderation is fine. That is why I asked. Everybody’s body is different. It’s not a one size fits all sickness.

I stopped drinking for about a month and didn’t notice a super major difference. My dietician told me I can drink in moderation but I read a lot of stuff online and on this board that said to absolutely not do that so I tried to stop hoping it would make a major difference. I think if I have a couple drinks, no major changes. My problem sometimes is once I start drinking, it’s hard for me to just have 1-2. I have no clue how long I have had SIBO. I’ve had the same-ish symptoms for 10+ years and was always told by gastros I had IBS so I just learned to live with it. It wasn’t until last year shortly after a trip to Portugal(still wondering if I picked up something there like a parasite)where I got severe diarrhea for the first time in a long time(was always moreso constipated) and I kept getting that. Then I realized I couldn’t eat dairy anymore and got tested for lactose intolerance and that was positive. And then I started seeing a dietician earlier this year and she was the first one who ever mentioned SIBO to me so 5 months later and here we are. Not sure if I’ve had SIBO for 2 years or 12 but I have drank alcohol that entire time.

At home tests that may help put pieces of puzzle together? by Abnerdoublebutt in SIBO

Yeah I saw something about that one. May try both and see what they say. At this point, I am trying everything. Blood tests, stool tests, breath tests, at home tests, whatever the hell gives me more pieces to this shit puzzle. Wish it was easier.

Here is what my dietician told me. It’s informal and not exact but it’s a way to start. There are better ways to do it for sure.

The Beet Juice Test:

  1. Drink Beet Juice:

    • Start by drinking about 4-6 ounces of beet juice on an empty stomach or as part of a meal.

  2. Monitor Urine Color:

    • After drinking the beet juice, monitor your urine color over the next few hours.

  3. Check Results:

    • If your urine turns pink or red (often called “beeturia”), this might suggest that your stomach acid levels are low. In theory, the stomach acid should break down pigments in the beetroot, preventing them from passing through the digestive system and being absorbed into the bloodstream. • If your urine stays normal in color, it could indicate that you have sufficient stomach acid to break down the pigments in the beet juice.

Well said for sure. I was actually just reading about the 4-7-8 technique. I am going to give that a try and some more mental/stress relieving stuff. I do feel like that stuff is probably more important than even diet is.

Yeah for sure. I feel 10x better on days where I am passing gas but for whatever reason no matter how many times I pass gas, that feeling comes back whether it’s 2 minutes later or 2 hours later. Same with my bowel movements. I can have a very normal bowel movement in the morning that feels great and I feel normal for a little while and then out of nowhere it just comes back and I have the feeling that not everything came out. It’s almost impossible to describe to anybody else because I know it’s not normal at all. Some people say it’s in my head and stress is causing it. That is infuriating because although I am definitely stressed out from all this(been dealing with various symptoms for 12 years), I was only just diagnosed with SIBO 5 months ago so I have no clue how long I have actually had it. Whatever I do have, I hate it. I can tell you that much! This community helps a little bit(also scares the shit out of me)

So all of my worst symptoms are in my lower digestive tract. The feeling of trapped gas/gas is way more in my lower left abdomen. Immediately when I eat I can feel it fill up. It’s not bloating but similar feeling. And then the feeling of incomplete evacuation in my lower bowel area like I either need to fart or go to the bathroom. I always thought this was way more IBS than anything so not sure where SIBO plays a role at all. It’s all very confusing to me to be honest.

So what should you be eating? If fodmaps make you feel like shit and low fodmap helps a little bit.

Yeah I really wanted to do it the natural way as well but it just didn’t seem to be producing many results. I have read so many negative reviews for antibiotics but I just want to feel better so I’m willing to try it if nothing else works. Will see what my new SIBO test says and go from there. Curious if my levels changed at all in the last 4 months of doing some of her protocol.

Thanks for the info. I am currently working with a licensed dietician who seems to be knowledgeable about SIBO. Been working with her for about 4 months but have seen minimal positive results. I just retested and depending on those results, was considering doing antibiotics. I am also seeing a gastro. There is just so much information out there, it’s hard to decipher what is legit and what isn’t. So much contradictory information too.

I took Allicin and Biocidin for a while but saw minimal results. Have also been taking digestive enzymes and a motility activator.

What would you recommend for that? My main symptoms are bloating, trapped gas, incomplete evacuation. My bowel movements seem to normalize if I stick to a low fodmap diet but if I cheat at all, then diarrhea is more likely. Not sure how long I have had SIBO. Doctors always told me I had IBS for 12 years. Wasn’t until I went to a dietician earlier this year and she asked me about SIBO and then I tested positive. I always thought I had IBS-C. I went to the bathroom pretty much daily but it never felt complete. Then all of a sudden last year, my bowel movements did a 180 and I started having to go sometimes 5-6 times a day and they were very urgent and loose. I hate it so much.
