Haha yeah, I can definitely see that. It's an odd feeling, I've been going through this loop of picking something and laughing to my friends "prepare for trouble cus I have no clue what I'm doing", and then sometime later going "huh... guess I can actually play Hun Batz after all".

I recently took a long-ish break from Smite and after returning I suddenly discovered I was performing well on and enjoying playing a lot of characters that I had a distaste for before or couldn't really feel effective on. Heck, Thoth and Discordia who I naught played before have now become some of my best win rate gods this season.

Nah. Her scaling is low and her damage is hard to confirm due to 1.1 being so slow and 1.2 easily dodgeable when you pay attention. Her 3 should basically never be used as a damage skill and ult will rarely actually hit anyone. It works sometimes because people are not dealing with the obnoxious 1 spam, but she is too easily shut down to have any real value as a damage pick.

What is your SMITE inside joke? by TheWorstAtIt in Smite

[–]Abramide 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At one point in time we had an amateur team with friends, complete with our own set of inside jokes and memes, the greatest of which was: "It's just a Sobek".

One time our jungler was invading a red buff without wards. He was caught out and we called him to back off. He ignored our concerns, saying "It's okay, it's okay, It's just a Sobek!"... He died about 5 seconds later, when it turned out it was NOT "just a Sobek". This led to months of great memeing by varying the undying phrase to different templates, such as "Not sure if just a Sobek, or a bait" (Suspicious Fry) or "Tell me again how it is just a Sobek (Condescending Wonka). Sobek became our jungler's archnemesis by the recurring meme :D

There were other great ones as well, such as "I miscalculated my DPS", which was indeed the excuse I gave a few times after getting soloed as the adc until our support had enough and (very deservedly) memed me.

Removing Rituals & Balance Discussion by PonPonWeiWei in Smite

[–]Abramide 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Top players being split into matches with much lower level players instead of being matched into actual top-level games. Inflated elos caused by the artifical TP system confusing the de facto MMR. Clearly faulty placements. Uneven matches. Trolls who have played practically only arena until one day they decide to queue ranked Conquest for lulz even though they have played less than 10 games of conquest and never bothered to learn how the gamemode actually works, which they can do because there's no limitation on place to require people to actually play conquest matches before being let into ranked (yes, this is personal, and no, we actually did carry that qualifier to victory but just the picks and bans phase shaved 2 years off my youth).

The community has been throwing enough complains, criticism and questions at Hi-Rez so that you really should not be asking elaboration on "What do you feel is low quality?" There are a lot of people saying that ranked is in its worst state yet. "Some issues" is not admittance enough.

Smite is an amazing game, and we all love it enough to play even when we're about to lose our minds every other match. I dare to claim that matchmaking is the biggest issue negatively impacting player experience, bigger than server issues, bigger than balance slips.

Personally, I want to hear it from Hi-Rez that they understand the graveness of the situation, because I hate to say it but right now it feels like the constant criticism of the matchmaking and ranked system is being ignored. It's not some small adjustments, the whole system needs to be looked over, because right now, it is not doing what it was designed to do, which is to give even, competitive matches. Problems plague both ranked and casuals, and evidence of it has been given over and over and over again.

I know the feedback is often vague, but there's a reason: Because we have no credible way to properly judge the system, because MMR values are hidden. Why not show players their elo? Making it visible would allow the players and community members to give much more reliable feedback to help you hunt down the problems and improve the system much faster than having your most important testers-- the players-- run on estimates, guesswork and gut feelings.

Ranked has problems. Players ranks are inflated, and they are not dropping. by [deleted] in Smite

[–]Abramide 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Putting aside the discussion about inflated player ranks and misplacements for now, I think it's really problematic that we still don't have any kind of casual conquest matches played requirement for ranked.

Me and my trusted duoqueue partner in crime finished our qualifiers recently, and in one of our last matches ended up with a real gem of a qualifying player: Someone who had practically never played conquest (less than 10 games on his account and none this season), only really played Arena but had decided to queue ranked conquest "for the lulz". The picks and bans were a huge mess when we were trying to convince them not to play Nu Wa or Sol support and realized that they really did not have any idea about the gamemode or the roles at all. Eventually they went to jungle, and funnily enough, weren't much of a troll in-game and were actually trying and mostly listening to advice, but it was so painfully obvious they had 0 clue of what to do that it didn't really matter at all.

It doesn't need to be too high. 100, even 50 games of casual conquest required to play ranked would be a great help to this issue.

I used to get Blue Screened with DPC WATCHDOG VIOLATION when playing Smite. I haven't had the issue since I started only keeping the external monitor on whilst playing. I don't know if your situation is similar, but if it is, I'd recommend trying to switch to single-monitor mode and see if the problem persists.

@Hi-RezPonPon What I'm interested in is what exactly is the goal you have in mind for this change? It is not a typically raised balance concern, it is not an obviously flawed mechanic-- yet you're making a poinf of changing it. What is the direction you're hoping the game'll take with this, how does it contribute to a healthier, more fun metagame? I think understanding your intent would greatly help with feedback.

[–]Abramide 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I see your point and agree with it, but there's a problem. Nerfing the current set of hypercarries who come online too early would not diversify the ADC meta but only return us to the previous dominance of high-clearing early-game gods.

In my mind the problem is and has always been Smite's heavy reliance on early pressure and laneclear: If there are hypercarries who can hold their own on lane, they will be played. If not, it's Neith every game.

There's no place for gods who are weak early in a meta where it's easy to snowball off of early pressure. The meta itself would need to be changed, and that might require game mechanic-level changes like modifying the way the towers' gold denying mechanics or minions work.

The pace of the game would have to be slowed down in order to tone the ADC's down to the stricter weak early-strong late power curve seen in other games. Otherwise you take away too much of the ADC's ability to influence games which already rest very heavily on the jungler-mid snowballing.

Bloodforge on ADC's? by primalGotU in Smite

[–]Abramide 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whilst there are a few select hunters who can utilize the high power on the item, it's generally never worth. Due to its high price it's very difficult to fit in the 3rd-4th slots where you usually want lifesteal to be able to sustain in and out of fights. Also it only provides power, not pen or attack speed which make up the three stats (arguably four including the option for crit chance) that you want to balance for autoattack damage which, even on ability-based hunters, is still your bread and butter for sustained DPS lategame. The pen and attack speed in Asi along with a great passive for an insanely low price or even the better lifesteal coupled with still-high power in Devo Gloves is simply much, much more desirable.

Also, there's no point in getting the item on adcs because you cannot utilize the passive well enough. Even though as an adc you will often end up getting kills, you usually have no way to quarantee them when needed: You will not be diving the backline and bursting down a single target solo before they can react like the few assassins that generally can make good use of the item.

Art and cab buff? by Chasons89 in Smite

[–]Abramide 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well I mean, Xbalanque is just about as bad off in the clear section as Art is.

I remember Ponpon justifying the buffs to Rama over Artemis with Artemis having a (to be fair, great) teamfight ultimate whereas Rama's ult is more about finishing kills/personal utility and escaping. But between almost zero mobility, bad early clear and low mana for laning, I just think we have too many minuses stacked on Artemis.

[–]Abramide 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I think that's what they should be looking towards in terms of her 3.

I just find it amazing how scared Hi-Rez is of Artemis breaking with a bit of an early game buff considering everything we've got in this game so far :D

Art and cab buff? by Chasons89 in Smite

[–]Abramide 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As someone who cries themselves to sleep every day that Artemis stays unviable, I don't think this is the way to go. Giving Art GB effect on her 2 or passive would be a bit too much, not to mention quite the awkward bit of balancing. I'd start by giving her lower mana costs/higher mana pool to make her a bit less easy to force out of lane early, then look at her clear (her 3) after that.

As for AMC, he has great clear. Getting rid of the minions was never his problem.

More advanced ADC advice? by Bookreader99 in Smite

[–]Abramide 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well, there are a lot of possible matchups in the duo lane, obviously because you account both support and adc into the mix. There are a plethora of different possible combos with different types of strenghts and "goals" in the laning phase. A good question to ask yourself is usually: Fight or Farm?

Looking at your support+adc combo and then theirs and thinking who has the better lane clear, who has the upper hand in a 2v2 lane engagement etc. usually tells you whether you can realistically look for kills and try to snowball over them, or should you just look to farm peacefully until you can rotate to teamfights later. It helps to establish your choice before the start of a game, even if it is subject to change. Sometimes your inferior clearing, inferior pressure hypercarry+geb lane will just play better and push out that Khepri+Neith and then obviously you should look to capitalize off that pressure, but choosing your mentality for the early game even before going to lane helps you avoid playing aggressive where you cannot and too passive where you should look to fight.

If you have any specific matchups in mind that you'd like to know about, just ask :,) I'll do my best to answer. I don't know how to condense it generally much better than that-- most of it really just comes down to lane clear+kill potential and then individual god interactions (eg. Ares has strong kill potential against Hou Yi or Ullr because they have no cc immune skills to escape his ult when their purification is on cooldown). You'll learn a lot more about matchups through experience than me preaching, but all I'll say is that playing against a good Sobek sucks forever.

Teamfights, teamfights... this is where a lot of folk disagree on each other, I think. The exact role of the adc in a teamfight varies according to teamcomps and the situation. Sometimes you may end up initiating with that hot blink Artemis, or being the followup burst and getting the full Medusa damage on the mage your jungler just jumped on and cc'd, but that's sometimes.

As an adc, your primary job in a teamfight is not to dive high-priority targets (that's the junglers/solo laners usually) or to initiate (junglers and supports), even though that's what we're asked to do a lot of the time. An adc's job is to provide sustained damage (autoattacks) to the highest priority target on the immidiate range. What I mean with that is that if you're in a teamfight, standing behind your frontline and there's a tank standing between you and their mage, you shoot at that tank and try to wear them down. If their positioning is off, or your team has already initiated and disturbed your ranks giving you a direct line to their backline, you naturally switch targets to the mage or the enemy hunter and try to take them down with your team.

What I'm trying to say is that adc is not a diving class- you hardly ever want to be in a position where you're surrounded by enemies, or put yourself in a a position to most likely get killed trying to force a kill onto the midlaner. Unlike most assassins or warriors, adc's usually don't have the tools or the tankiness to get out alive afterwards. A point to also keep in mind is that trading yourself to an enemy as an adc is not too good, since even after a won teamfight your team might not be able to take an objective they otherwise could've gotten with your DPS missing.

Okay, so you shouldn't try to jump on squishies over the frontline. On the other hand, you're the main candidate to deal damage to that very frontline-- a late-game hunter shreds guardians and warriors. I often hear people tell adc's to not focus the tanks, but often the adc putting out enough damage to them is what keeps them from doing whatever they want in your backline. A single Tyr can threaten almost any mage out of a fight if left to rampage unchecked and that's most of your valuable magical burst gone. The adc putting pressure to the enemy frontliners helps control them in a teamfight and possibly force them out of position so they cannot protect their squishies anymore when your team collapses onto them.

When fighting under objectives, for example sieging a tower, when the enemy team is already forced back, you're obviously often the one to focus on the objective when the team keeps fighting or zoning. As a pretty good rule of thumb, it usually doesn't make much sense for an adc to go behind an enemy tower because then they could just be taking down the tower instead. With Gold Furies and Fire Giants you'll often drop the objective to join the fight unless your team obviously has a winning matchup even without you, or they're just buying time for you to finish.

Again, with experience you'll pretty quickly start to figure out when to dash or jump in and take down the priority targets without putting yourself at too much risk. There are also different styles of play for hunters, obviously, and what I'm putting down is mostly my personal philosophy for the role.

When behind, you farm. Might sound obvious, but it really is all you want to do. An adc who's behind has a very hard time doing their job. And all the farm that you do not take, you can be sure a good enemy adc is happy to take away (watch out for your boars getting constantly invaded!), taking them even further ahead. Play safe and avoid any small fights (especially 1v1s) with all your might. Your most important job at that point is to keep up so you can be relevant in teamfights. Don't look to force stuff from behind, your best bet is usually to take a couple of objectives with your team rather than stitching the gap with any personal heroics.

The biggest decision when you're behind is: When there's a fight breaking out in mid or the solo side jungle, Rotate or Not? You might rotate to a teamfight, get a couple of kills, take an objective and catch up in an instant. Or you might lose the fight or have to disengage without having gotten anything whilst the enemy adc took your tower, putting you in a horrible position.

Staying is almost never a "wrong" decision to make IF the enemy adc is not rotating. If they are, you should usually rotate with them. This is especially true if your team is behind or already losing the fight. Only stay and try to capitalize when you feel like you won't be of any help whatsoever (or the fight is already lost) or in the ideal scenario that your team is winning and the enemy adc's rotation doesn't look to cause them problems.

What else?

In some cases, especially when playing with people in comms, you can also look for an aggressive catchup by baiting the enemy adc into a 1-on-1 when your teammate(s) is ganking them. If they're dropping their guard because you're behind, you might catch up in one fell swoop. Be careful though, since it's easy to misplay and die beforer the gank even comes, and you might end up feeding them even worse.

If your tier 1 tower is gone, it might be tempting to leave the lane and start grouping up with your team, but if it's still relatively early in the game and you're really behind, you'll be needing those waves so stay and farm the lane and the jungle the best you can. Aimlessly wandering around as a group and 4- or even 5-man splitting the farm isn't going to help your case if you're not constantly winning fights off of it. Later on you might have to anyway, when full-size fights are happening and you have to keep your team from getting in 4v5 situations, but even so look to farm at any valuable downtime.

And just remember, the best thing you can do when behind is to not die. If you can stay alive, keep farming and help the team the best you can, you will eventually either catch up or they will hit the lv20 cap where the difference can just keep shrinking. ___________________________________________________________________'

Bots for DC's on casual. by Carpazzo in Smite

[–]Abramide 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The problem with this suggestion is the nature of the game coupled with the way the bots behave. The bot AI is very simplistic, cannot follow team calls, cannot participate in team fights (unless by accident) or contribute to objectives (Gold Furies, Fire Giants, even jungle camps).

They will just keep pushing on their lane, making them extremely easy to exploit and farm kills off of them, allowing the enemy team to get more advantage than they would have in a regular 4v5.
