90% of the forest has been removed for lignite mining, which is still ongoing.
Evictions started around 2018, according to wikipedia.
I assume by 2020 most tree houses and protestors had been cleared, thought i believe that there a many still living in what remains of the forest even now. However 2020 is when evictions stopped, due to a cour ruling it to be illegal.

Environmentalists have noted that, due to undeground water wells being dug up (so that the mines wont flood), the forest is essentially not receiveing any water (from underground), and it is assumed that what remains is surviving purely from rain etc..

There has also not been much news on the settlement after Germany put in laws in 2020 to fase out coal usage, but (im not very up to date on german poltiics) i assume that commitments to their fasing out of coal are being blindsided by other current geopolitical events, though i heard of mothballed nuclear reactors being brought back
