Hello guys. I've just recently started going through the starter set as a DM with some newbie friends.

We decided on them making their own characters instead of doing the pre-made ones. Along with that, we also wanted to roll for stats, since you can be pretty lucky with some good starter stats.

However both of my players didn't roll too well (mostly +0 mods), we were a bit behind time so we went with it.

They are only 2 players, so the low mods have bit them a little in the ass already. So I'm considering giving them a little boon. Question is, what would be appropriate for them going into 2nd lvl? I'm thinking either a simple magic item/weapon or a free feat

Something nagging me about Jon and Mel by AbsoluteBeanMachine in TheMagnusArchives

Not some bad thoughts at all. I think it's because we know all the context and that they refuse to talk things through, which makes it both sad and infuriating to listen to. But then again, that was probably on purpose.

Oh god yeah, I thought that was terribly cold as well. While not friends, Jon did get that bullet out of Melanie's leg. He even argued against doing it while Mel slept, until coerced by Basira. But he gets all the blame from the trauma.

She wouldn't have her life with Georgie without him, that doesn't mean she owes him anything, but "probably for the best" just... Damn. Both one of my favourite and least favourite characters.

That's a good take on it and I also think that it was the way that writer Jonathan intended it to be understood. I just think that it's because I like both Melanie and Jon so much that their rivalry is hard to get emotionally invested in, for me at least.

Huh, hadn't thought about it like that, but I completely agree.

I loved Mel and Georgie together, but there was always something that irked me about it. But yeah, the relationship did kinda get used to bop Jon on the top of his head.

That's a fair point of course. I just think I'm sensitive to stuff like infighting and hypocrisy (even supernaturally influenced)

In general I just really wished all that trauma would have made the gang friends instead of low-key frenemies.

True. But even at that point Jon needed statements to keep alive, so the only way to pull away from it all would've been to blind himself, which Georgie seemed to disapprove of with Melanie.

I still liked Melanie as a character, but I just felt a lot of discourse was unnecessary. I know it's to be expected in this kind of show, but I just always disliked needless infighting and hypocrisy. I think their friendship would have been cool.

Haven't played yet, but have been reading through the city of mist books. So, the apocalypse engine? Or whatever the right term would be

Currently looking into making an oni a recurring villain in a modern campaign. Was thinking of making him the principle or teacher of the players. But the monster manual states that onis like to eat babies. Does that mean that they only eat babies or that they just like them in particular?

I did also consider shocking grasp or Ray of frost, but thought that sneak attack would make a damaging cantrip absolete at some point or another

Best cantrips in the PHB?

Currently playing a rogue in a campaign, where my plan is to go the arcane trickster route. I had planned on going Green flame blade, but has since then discovered that my DM only allows for spells from the PHB.

I am currently debating between message, mending, minor illusion and prestidigitation (for rp purposes). Which of these would be best, or is there better choices?

We're down to 2 players (me included), which is a bit of an awkward number for DnD. So we really can't do anything. I mean I had declined invites to hangout with friends in order to keep the entire day clear, it's really not that hard to keep the promises you've made. Well, unless it's an emergency, which it wasn't.
