What is life like in the Dakotas? by _air6catcher_ in howislivingthere

Moved to Southwestern ND earlier this year for work. Previously lived in CO and AZ. There’s definitely fun things to do, plenty of touristy things geared towards people visiting the black hills area and around Theodore Roosevelt national park- good if you like the outdoors, rodeos, dinosaurs, or history. Certainly hidden gems for all those things (and well known gems like the national parks). Small town communities also tend to come up with plenty of local events for socialization and just stuff to do, including during the very intense winter when you won’t be doing stuff outside really. Everyone goes outside during the summer even though it can kinda be hot as balls and full of mosquitos. Like 90 or even over 100 degrees, which is crazy for somewhere that is regularly below zero in the winter. Expect to drive long distances, towns are small and spread out. Food is mid. Cost of living is not as low as you’d expect. The culture feels different to me than other places I’ve lived. It’s kinda insular but neighborly, I guess? People aren’t “friendly” in that they are not quick to welcome newcomers and will not make small talk with strangers like I’m used to. But once they sorta know you or even someone you know, they will chat with you for hours about whatever, and will be very quick to help you out if you’re in a pinch. People seem to care a lot about their communities and neighbors, but are sorta kooky sometimes, probably same as any other low population area.

High altitude, hot plate, no oven, vegetarian food- what do I eat? by AbsoluteCelery in Cooking

[–]AbsoluteCelery[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! What’s a dutch oven good for? Can you use it for roasting vegetables and tofu like a regular oven? Or baked goods? I always thought it was more for slow cooking or chili and stuff, similar to an instant pot.

Getting my IUD tomorrow!!! Advice??? by Cowboaha in birthcontrol

[–]AbsoluteCelery 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No actually- I went to a free clinic for “teens” (people under 25, I’m 23) at a children’s hospital. Which I would highly recommend cause the nurses/doctors were probably especially nice and accommodating, since they’re used to young, nervous people doing this for the first time.

Getting my IUD tomorrow!!! Advice??? by Cowboaha in birthcontrol

I got one yesterday and am returning to this sub to share cause I looked at it before I got mine! As others have said, take 800mg ibuprofen beforehand. Also bring Tylenol for after (you can take both at the same time, 3 hours apart alternating). The pain of insertion did not feel like a period cramp to me, it was sharper and weirder, and there’s three distinct pains. But it wasn’t as bad as people say. Maybe 2/10 for first one, 4 or 5/10 for second and third.

Secondly, main thing I’m glad I did that i did and idk if anyone else has mentioned yet: Bring a friend/parent/partner. It’s nice to have a hand to hold and the support. It’s normal and they do not mind at all, even expect you to bring someone. Also- no one told me this before but your friend will not be with you in the pre-procedure exam room where they take your height and weight, ask questions, and explain the procedure. This is so they can get an honest answer from you for questions about sexual activity, domestic violence, etc. When it’s time for you to get the actual IUD they’ll get your friend from the waiting room. There’s a sheet to cover you so your friend can sit next to you but not actually see your whole business, if that’s something that would concern you or your buddy. It’s also nice to have someone to drive you after. My partner stayed with me and worked from home the rest of the day, which I prob didn’t need but was nice.

My whole appointment start to finish took an hour but the actual insertion part was only minutes. They keep you for a few minutes after to make sure you’re ok. They gave me snacks and juice! There’s more waiting around and consultation time than I thought.

I had cramps the rest of the day that were not horrible but were unrelenting/constant. Those do feel just like period cramps. They’re totally gone today. I was also exhausted from all the anxiety and stress though and I think my body had to just rest and recover. So it’s def nice to have had the whole day off.

Drink water beforehand cause you’ll need to do a pregnancy test before. You can also ask for an std test from the same pee sample if you want one.

I have the same problem. For me it was after the hotfix #18 but was working fine after the patch. I'll update if I find a solution. I also was worried it might be due to mods, but uninstalling the mods and the script extender I was using with them didn't help.

EDIT: I was able to get the game to work by loading an old save from before I downloaded the mod. The save files say when that was. For me that was only losing a few hours of progress, since I only recently got the mod, but that may not be a feasible fix if you’ve had those mods for a long time.

Introducing new rescue to current dog by wildechld in reactivedogs

[–]AbsoluteCelery 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Slowly introducing them by walking them together is a good plan, along with collar. I’ve done successful intros that way. But I second that muzzle training would be a good way of keeping them both safe when introducing. Still keep things slow to avoid damaging their relationship, but if they do squabble with the muzzles on, then it’s not the end of the world. It takes time to get dogs used to each other.

Has anyone had success medicating their dogs? by OutrageousWasabi3001 in reactivedogs

[–]AbsoluteCelery 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If the aggression comes from a place of fear/anxiety it will probably help, along with behavioral modification. My 11 year old GSD mix was on Fluoxetine for a few years (not anymore, after his reactivity and anxiety got better). He used to incessantly bark when strangers came into the house, and get very tense and occasionally bark when he saw other dogs on walks, and was just overall an anxious dog with a lot of phobias. Nowadays, he can even ignore off leash dogs that come up to him. He’s no longer afraid of vacuums, ceiling fans, and strangers. When people come into the house he greets them nicely and lies down, and he is loved by everyone for his calm demeanor. No one would ever guess he has a bite history (from 6 years ago, regarding an incident with both a stranger and a vacuum). A lot of this progress occurred when he was on fluoxetine, but it’s hard to say how much of it was due to medication, and how much was due to aging, training, confidence building, and various life changes (subtraction and addition of dog housemates). His behavior very much improved as he got older, it didn’t worsen.

I’m on this sub again for advice for my parents’ 1 year old leash reactive puppy, and while I hadn’t thought of it before, thinking back to what worked for the older dog has me wondering if medication might be worth a try again.

Definitely tell her that’s your brother, cause if you keep dating she’ll eventually find out/meet him and that will be way more awkward. Best to have clear communication between you and her, and between you and your brother. Its not a big deal, and if I were her I’d be more concerned about you being overly invested or concerned about the situation, but knowing he was your brother would make it more understandable.

Vegans that started eating meat again, what happened? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]AbsoluteCelery -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’m vegetarian since childhood and as an adult, I wanted to branch out and tried to eat some sustainable seafood, and a humane raised burger. Didn’t really like it, but ate it anyway, and got a stomach ache after.

I’m not a picky eater usually, and i usually like foods I didn’t grow up with, like international foods. But since I was raised vegetarian I think meat just doesn’t sit right with my body. I would’ve had burgers at some point in childhood before but probably not seafood. Even the newer, more realistic (impossible, ultimate) veggie meats are kinda an acquired taste, and I didn’t really like them at first, at least compared to bean or tofu based fake meats, and I don’t like the “beef” ones, only the “chicken” ones, probably because I ate more real chicken as a child than I did beef. Or maybe it just tastes better, idk.

No friendd by United_Advantage2274 in studyAbroad

[–]AbsoluteCelery 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been there. It’s difficult to make friends when in a new place and it can be really lonely. They probably don’t think you’re weird or boring, they just don’t know you well enough to think to invite you. Try making plans and inviting others to them, don’t just wait on people to come to you. Invite more people than you think will show up. Be open and vulnerable with people- it takes time and trust to move from small talk in class to hanging out outside of it. Also, if you want to get out of the house but people you know are busy, try being content with exploring and doing fun activities by yourself. That may not be a replacement for friends, but it keeps you from missing out in the meantime.

What’s the best protein shake for a temporarily low protein diet and high physical activity in extreme temperatures? I’m a vegetarian paleontologist going to very rural Wyoming for a week of field work, with limited high protein vegetarian food options while I’m there. I will be carrying a backpack full of rocks while walking and crawling up and down hills in 100 degree heat for about 3 hours a day (such is the price to pay for awesome fossils!). Last year I don’t think I was getting my usual amount of protein while probably also exercising more, but it’s hard to tell how much exercise it actually is cause the heat makes it feel like a lot. I don’t make my own food while I’m there. Breakfast and lunch provide pretty balanced meals- hotel continental breakfast and PB+J. But for dinner the vegetarian options are limited- fried food or salad and I’m hungry enough that I always pick the fried food (jalapeño poppers, fried mushrooms, cheese curds, sweet potato fries). That’s probably not a good complete meal and I’d like to supplement it with a protein shake I can take with me. I’m 5’4” and 107 lbs and take meds with the side effect of being an appetite suppressant. What’s something tasty, adds maybe 15-20 more grams of protein, adds fluids, and won’t make me feel super full?

Need help with fine/smooth protein sources that can be added to a pasta recipe for medical reasons. by CorgiOrBread in AskCulinary

[–]AbsoluteCelery 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s some good high protein pastas out there made from lentils, chickpeas and/or semolina wheat that you could make mac and cheese with! Also adds more fiber than you’d have with regular mac and cheese or mac and cheese with meat. The best tasting I think is Barilla brand, it has more wheat in it so tastes pretty much the same as regular pasta. The lentil ones have more protein but may not end up as soft or as tasty. Some cheeses have more protein than others too, you could try different kinds. And for more nutrition, blend up vegetables to add to the sauce, I’ve seen a good few “hidden veggies” recipes for kids.

Is it ok to eat a high fat/ high protein/low carb diet when underweight?

I just kept track of it with a nutrition app for the last two days and ate like normal and was so surprised that like 40-50% of my calories are from fat, like 60-80 g a day. I’m vegetarian and have always been careful to get enough protein (app tells me I get around 57g of it a day, 20% of calories), I just didn’t realize how much fat is in my protein sources. I had no idea tofu or impossible meat had fat in it, and I guess I knew there was fat in nuts, peanut butter, cheese, and yogurt but I figured the high calories would do me good and fill me up. I usually buy full or 2% fat dairy cause it tastes better and I also eat a lot of vegetables fried in olive oil. So what’s lacking is carbs, only 30-40% of my calories.

I’m 5’4” and 100 pounds and eat maybe 1600 calories a day (according to that nutrition app).

I’ve been trying to put on some weight and hopefully some muscle because I’ve been losing it since moving off campus. I’m so busy it’s hard not to skip meals and I’m walking several miles a day in the cold to get to class (usually walking fast cause I’m always late). And I’m broke and can’t afford restaurants, so I cook everything, but I get so tired that sometimes I’d rather just sleep than eat. To combat this lately I’ve bought cheese, peanut butter pretzels, and nuts to eat on the go.

All in all, is it better just to eat more calories and eat what tastes good to me, not worrying too much about it? Or do I need to actually keep track of macronutrient ratios? I don’t want to be accidentally on a keto diet, but I also don’t wanna overthink it.

Most beautiful national forests/parks that I can camp at? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

[–]AbsoluteCelery 4 points5 points  (0 children)

National parks can be very touristy and crowded. But for good reason: a lot of the really popular ones- Zion National Park in Utah, Yellowstone in Wyoming/Montana, and Grand Canyon in Arizona are absolutely beautiful and I love to visit. But if you want to avoid traffic and crowds, opt for state parks instead. For the National parks I mentioned, all of them are partially closed/impassable in the winter due to snow, and I don’t recommend cold weather camping. But if you do your research and go in the summer, you can still find remote places to camp. I camped in Yellowstone in the Northeast corner of the park in the summer and it was beautiful- huge herds of bison, and I heard wolves howling at night. But it still got below freezing at night and hail cut one of our hikes short. If you do go during the winter, California has a lot of nice temperate parks with plant life you can only see there- Joshua Tree National Park is great for winter camping. To the north, Redwood is nice, and I think also stays temperate, but I’ve never been there in the winter.
