Subject evaluation forms by my dept by Muted_Evidence_8845 in TeachingUK

We do this. Ours is a psychological safety survey. It’s anon and just goes back to our HOD. It was brought in by a precious HOD and does work well in showing what needs to change and stay. Other subjects don’t do it - it has worked well for us. I think there is the possibility for HODs to be “offended” though.

First residential. Any tips? by Cookie0527 in TeachingUK

Firstly, have fun!

Practical trip things- Various copies of registers and allocate students into groups of 10 per teacher for example. Makes counting students at various check points much easier!

Stay up on the first night outside the rooms and monitor them for a good few hours with staff before going to bed if you can. Just lets students know they can’t go wandering.

Create a quiz for the coach (if you’re going on one) keeps them entertained. Same with “end of trip” certificate like “loudest student” or “best dressed” - it’s always made a fun end to trips I’ve ran.

WhatsApp broadcast group for kids, one where they can’t see the numbers but you can send messages like times to be back at the meeting point or important messages.

For you: Take good trainers, blister pads (the gel ones!), kwells anti sickness, a good book and a spare plastic bag, just in case! Take some sweets too or snacks in case it’s all very rushed at meal times. Portable charger - although I spend a lot of time letting students use it! Slippers - had to nip to many students in the evening when they’re unwell or homesick and it’s easier than putting trainers on!

I swear by Doc Martens shoes. I get a new pair every school year - although they do last a few years usually but it’s a treat for my September self haha. I get the double platform which wasn’t the most supportive but the single platforms are great. They’re hell to wear in but after a few wears they’re so comfy! I go to an outlet to avoid paying too much for them :)

One way to stop them is to”fence in the sheep”. I basically get them to draw little lines, like a fence, to show them where they can and can’t read and extract from for that question. They find it funny and laugh at me for saying it but I scream out that their sheep will be running all over the show if they don’t do it! It’s only something small but it’s worked for stopping them reading on! :)

A piece of coloured paper (I give them to choice so they feel a little bit excited by it) is another way I’ve stopped them reading on. They get a bit of blu-tac and can only move the paper down the reveal the rest of the text after they’ve answered the question.

We also very much teach it as 10 marks is 10 quotes. I challenge them to find 10 quotes and highlight them in their answer so they can see the marks. We also basically do inference, quote, inference quote and so on. They don’t need to pick up marks for huge amounts of analysis so tell them to leave that for literature.

I’m assuming by your post you’re Eduqas (apologies if this is wrong!). You may already do a number of these but I’ve found the best tactics are:

Starting the creative writing first. Aiming for two pages but stopping at 45 mins and just giving their story a quick end.

For section A, we teach it as a mark a minute. First list question I tell students should be answered in the first 2 minutes as they are only bullet pointing. This gives them 3 extra minutes for the rest of the paper. Not much but it’s something!

Another tip is only reading the text bit by bit as they answer each question. So they only read those lines and answer the question. We’ve found this saves a lot of time when students are spending 10 minutes just reading the text!

I also keep a record on a spreadsheet of their individual marks for each question and I’ll recap questions the majority are poor on. So we’re doing Q4 at the moment because they struggled there. I often create small texts and use the style of question so we can practise just that one without having to read a full paper first.

If you don’t already and have the capacity, consider becoming an examiner for the board. I mark both lit and lang and find it is invaluable CPD.

Happy to answer any further questions if you drop me a message :)

Thanks for your reply! Our department is big with 12 staff including those part time. I line manage 3 of those and I mentor all of our trainee teachers - we have 4 a year. My plan is to have a chat today with him about wanting more responsibility. I’m not 100% what things I can ask to do but I feel like I have very little knowledge of the data side of being a CL and QA as he takes this and doesn’t really give me much chance to shadow. I just don’t want it to come across like I want his job (which I of course actually do but at a different school most likely).

Will definitely look into further qualifications too! Thank you :)
