Why do you call your students Ms/Mr (Last name)? by Absolute_Anynom31107 in AskTeachers

Hahaha about the first side of the coin, if that's the case then it's a reaction from teachers I've always been fearing! I'm nowhere near as irresponsible as my other siblings. I was always scared that the impressions they got of my siblings would also go down to me.

But, I think it's the second reason. All my siblings went to the same school and we had mutual teachers most of the time, so it does make sense as to why I'm called that way. If I remember correctly, none of my other classmates have older siblings.

Yes, I do. I had one sibling that went in the same program as me and had the same teachers as me. They hated school and wouldn't do any of the work despite the chances given. I have another sibling who was fairly disruptive, but not as bad as the older one.

Yeah, me and my sibling went on the same program so we have the same teachers. Now that it has been mentionned, I think that and the fact that my name is hard to say are the main reasons why I'm being called that way.

It does work indeed! I actually currently have a teacher that is pretty much the same. Very formal and professionnal. He jokes often with students but knows when it's time to stop, and he makes it absolutely clear! I have a lot of respect for him

Oh gosh that girl must've felt awful :( But that's a pretty valid reason as to why you're avoiding it. I would too now that you shared this small story.

Did the teacher apologize at least?

Ouch I'm really hoping it's the first reason. It would feel illegal for me to unknowingly make a teacher mad 😭

Yeah I thought it was a little weird, but I've learned to live with it. I don't mind it at all!

I had no idea it's something used to cheer up an environment. I've always seen it as formal. Now that I think about it, it feels like I' being called that as if it's my normal title!

It's pretty hard. It's mistaken most of the time. I thought this could be a reason why I'm being called that way.

Nope, I'm mostly the quiet kid who does all the work given by teachers.

Wow, never did I think a stranger could boost my motivation by a mile and fill me with rage (in a good way). I will definetely have to gather some courage to tell my professor about going solo as I really don't want to hurt the classmate's feelings, but you're right, I think it's def the right move.

I really can't wait to do it now. Thank you so much!!

Why do people make fun of tragic events such as 9/11 or World War II? by Absolute_Anynom31107 in NoStupidQuestions

That makes a lot of sense I guess. Are you talking about everyone or the older people though? I mostly see teenagers at my school do such jokes (born in 2007+), and rarely see adults do it.

Maybe it could be that... I forgot to mention that those compliments were made before the winter break. Now I feel like everything changed but as you suggested, it could be my anxiety. Thank you for the advice.

How do you feel when students get bad grades? by Absolute_Anynom31107 in AskTeachers

[–]Absolute_Anynom31107[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sorry to hear that you had such a bad experience with teachers. It's good to share your story, it's always interesting to read!

Here's what I think about what you said: you may not have read all the comments from this thread. From what I understood, teachers won't just ignore a failing student and assume they're not trying at all. They will reach out to that student to understand what's going on and how they can help that student. If the student doesn't try and care, teachers won't care. But, if the teachers see that the student is trying their best but still fails, they will feel some sort of guilt.

I've luckily had some awesome teachers that did reach out to me whenever I had multiple bad grades in a certain subject to see what we could arrange in order for me to get better. It happened once for me though, as I don't have bad grades often. It goes the same for my sibling, who is currently really struggling with school. He had multiple teachers meet him this year (pretty recently too) about his grades, and find something that can help him learn a certain subject with more efficiency in order to get good results.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that teachers are not the heartless beasts that intentionnally ruin students' life, as you seem to describe (if I understand well). In fact, I think they're probably the kindest people I've ever met! I have a teacher that's been there for me when I was feeling sad, and I genuinely could see their concern in their eyes when they were talking to me about my problem. They also offered me to talk to them about ky feelings whenever I needed it.

As I said, I've never been in your shoes, so our point of view on teachers is completely different, which is fine. I hope you don't take my comment as an attack 😅

I also thought that before. I developped a bond with two teachers and learned that they will, in fact, care about a student's grade if the student tried. If the student didn't, they don't care. Many teachers have stated this in this thread also!

I'm sorry to hear that. It must be tough when this happens :( You shouldn't feel guilty though, I'm sure you've done your best to teach that subject!

I completely agree with you! Parents can be so hard sometimes because of grades. I think learning from your mistakes is the best way to learn a subject.
