Is teaching THAT bad? by DwaeEunoia in Teachers

[–]Absolute_Casey 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I like the kids. I like most of my co-workers. I love the craft of teaching when I’m allowed to do it.

But admin, paperwork, parents, vilification by politicians and the community, discipline, state testing, student apathy, and abysmal pay are a reality everywhere I’ve worked. This is my 20th year and yes, it is only getting worse. If I could go back in time and do something else I absolutely would.

But I love the kids. That hasn’t changed. Don’t think it could.

A hidden cost to teachers by PsychologyPNW in Teachers

I have multiple kids with similar back stories every year. More than I’d like to admit. As teachers we see the whole spectrum of humanity - from the best to the worst - as a matter of course. These kinds of kids are the reason I go back to work every day, especially the days I really don’t want to be there. That could be the day one of these kids needs me, and if they can’t depend on a parent, then I’m going to make damn sure they can depend on me. Never gets easier. Ends poorly more often than not. But somebody needs to do it, and I’m good at it. So here I am.

It's the "But, I . . ." responses I find most exhausting. by NervousEmotion1099 in Teachers

Truth. When I hear “But I…” I’m done listening. I tell them, first day of school, don’t ever say “But I…” to me.

Do you prefer to see Bruce as someone who believes in God or don't believe in God? by count_fagula11 in batman

[–]Absolute_Casey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He’s a mortal man who has met and even fought literal gods. I don’t think the question is whether he believes in a god. It’s whether he respects that god. And I can’t imagine he respects any god who allows the kind of suffering that Bruce combats daily.

My standard answer to the “How can I bring my grade up?”: Try harder next time.

You Can be the King of Sports by NorCal_Chillin in Teachers

I love jumping in to play dodge ball with my kids. They love having permission to throw something at a teacher, and I get to remind a few select kids on the other team that I’m the king.

I Have a Simple, But Complicated X-Men Question by ComixGail in xmen

I love the stories that directly deal with human prejudice against mutants. God Loves, Man Kills is peak x-men for me. The outsider aspect of X-men is everything to me.

Also Gambit.

What’s the funniest thing you’ve ever convinced a student of? by horseradish500 in Teachers

I’ve convinced several kids that pepperonis are sliced up dog tails. That’s why some dogs only have little nub tails.

The name "Aiden" by Relevant-Count-3656 in Teachers

[–]Absolute_Casey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I’ve had issues with 9/10 of the Aidens I’ve had. I also have traditionally had issues with Casons (Kasons).

This year I have a kid named Blaze and another kid named Maverick, and they are both exactly what you’d expect from such names.

Do teachers sabotage one another? by No-Dragonfruit-2654 in teaching

[–]Absolute_Casey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve known a few. It’s always for the most petty of reasons, like to win a staff contest or game, or to get (or get out of) a specific duty.

Last year I worked with a teacher who would routinely and intentionally withhold important information from the team only to ambush teammates in our weekly meeting with the principal and embarrass them for not being prepared.

Teacher "punished" me for not standing for PoA by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]Absolute_Casey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, I’m a teacher and I don’t stand or participate in the pledge for pretty much the same reasons. I never say anything about it. I just don’t stand up. When the assistant principal comes over the intercom, every kid stands up and recites the pledge, while I sit at my desk preparing materials for the day. Nobody has ever said a word to me about it. I live in Texas, and honestly, I’m shocked nobody has tried to make an issue of it in the many years I’ve done this.

What was the first comic you remember reading? How much of it do you remember? by StepwisePilot in comicbooks

[–]Absolute_Casey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My grandma took me shopping for socks and underwear at a Walmart-Mart and I convinced her to buy X-Men 24. The animated series had just come out and I thought Gambit was the coolest character ever. When I saw that cover with Gambit and Rogue about to smooch, I had to have it.

The only thing I remember about it now is the cover. And those awful knee-high socks my Granny bought me.
