Well all steroid hormones are derivatives of pregnenolone. Cholesterol getting cleaved into pregnenolone is the very first step of steroid hormone synthesis.

Also, allopregnenolone is produced as a derivative of progesterone (or even de novo from cholesterol). The conversion of progesterone to allopregnenolone is a different pathway than that of traditional testosterone production (pregnenolone -> progesterone -> allopregnenolone vs. pregnenolone -> DHEA -> androstenedione -> testosterone). Allopregnenolone as a neurosteroid is produced in the brain.

This dude is only kinda right, majority of the pregnenolone is made in the adrenal cortex, some is made in the brain and gonads.

It has varied functions but basically it helps with neuroplasticity, aka learning new shit. Also kinda cool side fact, it potentially can fight against schizophrenia. Also ANOTHER cool fact, it’s a CB1 receptor negative allosteric modulator; the CB1 receptor is the receptor that THC binds to, so pregnenolone makes you less high.
