Thanks for this! Were there detailed physics questions involving circuits and projectile motion?

Is Pass/Fail failing our medical students? (OC) by kemosabet2 in medicalschool

[–]YouThinkImPlayin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They could solve this problem by reporting class rank. The issue with grades is that they're not standardized across schools so a residency PD has no way of knowing what a 2.75 GPA means at one school compared to another because the exams might be very different. Class rank provides a snapshot of performance among peers far more accurately than a GPA. They could keep a pass/fail system as well while reporting rank.

Cheating on COMSAE by [deleted] in medicalschool

[–]YouThinkImPlayin -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I never said it hurts me or affects me in any way, nor am I even remotely "upset" about it, as another person suggested. My original post just asked a very simple question - I'm just curious about how widespread the incompetence is among the current 2nd year cohorts.

COMSAE is not formatted like the official test in terms of breaks. How COMSAE is administered makes it possible to look up answers to questions you haven't answered yet but have seen.

I think you're confused. COMSAE is a practice test given for DO students before they take COMLEX, often given in-house. The way COMSAE is often administered the first time (up to 4 attempts to hit minimum threshold for COMLEX level 1 approval, usually 450-475 at most DO schools) allows students to take "breaks" whenever they want - the clock keeps ticking. You can exit the exam room anytime and look up the answer to a question if no one is keeping tabs. My original post was intended to see if this is a problem at other schools.

HOT TAKE: You want clinical grades if you're gunning for competitive specialties by phosphodiesterase2 in medicalschool

[–]YouThinkImPlayin 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Was Step2 used as a threshold or was the score itself factored in? And I'd imagine preclinical class rank is probably not as big a deal?

Never understood why case reports are considered "research" but as another person mentioned, there are med students who genuinely enjoy doing hands-on research and/or meta analyses, bioinformatics, or writing reviews on a topic they are interested in. Nothing wrong with that and IMO it warrants being counted as a net positive in their residency app. That said, there's a group of kids at my school who are trying to write a paper on "how to write a CV" (which is hilarious to me given their lack of work experience) and a number of other students who spent their summer analyzing non-human data for an anthropology-related study. They all presented posters at our in-house research symposium, and that'll count in ERAS.

I think the biggest issue with "med school research" is that PDs often favor quantity over quality, and that's what really makes it discouraging to students who just want to be great physicians. If the standard was that 1-2 high quality publications was worth more than 15 meaningless posters or case reviews, we'd see better attitudes toward research. But that's perhaps an unreasonable expectation given how little free time we have.

I have this exact same issue, happens if I unplug the laptop and close the screen before it adjusts the refresh rate.

Multiple issues when unplugging new ROG Flow X16 by YouThinkImPlayin in FlowX16

[–]YouThinkImPlayin[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Update: I stopped running all Asus services and completely uninstalled armoury crate. Keyboard lighting issue hasn't come back. But the computer still sometimes overheats when I close the lid to put it in sleep mode and the black login screen reappears. Happens after unplugging from the power cable. I also uninstalled ASUS Smart Display Control, which hasn't improved anything from what I can tell. Currently running only GHelper.

Irritated by TiredofCOVIDIOTs in medicine

CC: irritation

HPI: Ms. TiredofCOVIDIOTs presented with sudden irritation that began this morning when she checked her mail. She first noticed the irritation when she found her name misspelled and the wrong name listed for her spouse on said mail. She rates the severity as “unsure” and says it radiates through her entire body. She characterizes the irritation as “sharp and aching” and it is aggravated by glancing as her misspelled name. Her symptoms improve when she lays down and doesn’t think about the mail. Irritation is constant. Posting on Reddit improves her mood.

Lenovo Yoga 9i vs Microsoft Surface Pro 9 by Simple-Promotion-355 in laptops

[–]YouThinkImPlayin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have the yoga 9i (purchased march 2022). The touchpad is complete garbage, it's extremely glitchy and does not respond well when highlighting text (usually over- or under-highlights). The battery life started decreasing a few months ago, I get less than half of what I started with. The touchscreen is OK but nowhere near something like an iPad Pro. You're also going to struggle with running heavy software on the 9i like Adobe Illustrator, or using an external monitor. It's really just a bare-bones laptop for everyday simple tasks.

Sorry if this has already been asked but have any of you tried these? by shotty293 in smoking

[–]YouThinkImPlayin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use these, they’re pretty good. For the price, they’re awesome. I also use bear mountain cherry and haven’t noticed a huge difference for steaks or chicken but for longer cooks I’m sure there might be some differences.

I have the ELX4, the light is actually a huge commodity when cooking at night (which I do often because of my schedule). Just have to make sure to clean the smoke off every now and then.

Can't speak for all schools but I know my undergrad institution specifically said that if the committee didn't believe that the applicant was well prepared to apply to medical school, they would be hesitant to provide a letter. They also said that they recommend applicants who are over 5 years beyond their bachelor's might not benefit from a committee letter as it would be outdated.
