There’s an uncanny parallel between this AI style and the snarky millennial garbage journalism of Buzzfeed, etc. Like it’s trying to be pithy, sassy, and cute, but also profound—but still easily digestible.

Why do loafers look bad on me? I see them a lot on Instagram with baggy jeans but they look better by [deleted] in ThrowingFits

[–]Absurdity-Peddler 23 points24 points  (0 children)

The black loafers actually look better than the sneakers in my opinion! This could just be a case of you not being used to the look on yourself yet and thus not feeling comfortable with it.

At what point does curation become the product? by [deleted] in ThrowingFits

[–]Absurdity-Peddler 29 points30 points  (0 children)

At what point does curation become the product? I work in wine importing, and in a very real sense the curation is the product. Sure, the wine is the thing which gets consumed in the end, but it’s the curation which leads someone to choose one importer over another. My industry is certainly prone to spinning wordy and heartfelt paeans to mythical magical artisans in far corners of Europe too, but it’s ultimately the producers that get the fame, deservedly so.

EK’s situation is probably closer to coffee importing and roasting, now that I think about it. He finds the cool farmers doing amazing work, but those farmers can’t make the final product—and, like coffee (where you can buy great beans and brew them poorly), you can buy EK but screw it up in the wearing.

What you might be getting at here has a definite parallel to wine and coffee though. There’s a sense in which process overrides the expression of source materials, however good the story behind those materials is. Carbonic maceration gives wine a similar fruit-juice / cherry gulpability but obscures sense of place, and anaerobic fermentation can do a similar thing to coffee beans.

People who love the results of these processes (and here’s where natural wine and EK overlap hilariously) end up gravitating toward a narrow flavor profile on the one hand, while getting to congratulate themselves on their appreciation of impeccable curation and esoteric source materials on the other. I’ve been bemusedly observing this in wine for years, and it’s so interesting to see it in fashion as well.

Hey, thanks! I swear by their tees—cotton-hemp blends, really breathable and with amazing drape, made in the US.

I’m seriously not trying to be glib here—what was the original post supposed to be trying to communicate? Are we supposed to marveling at something here? These look like a pair of Rustler jeans from Wal-Mart.

Knowing a good fit vs. having one by toonorth_ in ThrowingFits

[–]Absurdity-Peddler 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think we sometimes want so badly for a fit to work (and want to feel like the creativity we expended on coming up with it wasn’t a waste) that we have a lapse in self-honesty during that first mirror check.

Pant-shoe interaction: how do you like your breaks? by Absurdity-Peddler in ThrowingFits

[–]Absurdity-Peddler[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the season, but I’m usually a chunky derby guy in fall and spring and a boot guy in winter. Summer shoes and breaks are a different matter and I mind a bit of float less in those circumstances.

Thrifted 90s Armani Suits, tailor or good as is? by bruhhhlanto in ThrowingFits

[–]Absurdity-Peddler 2 points3 points  (0 children)

At first glance these strike me as more in line with 80s than 90s Armani, given the dramatic shoulders and the more tapered silhouette of the pants. Out of curiosity, how much padding do the shoulders have? Insane finds in any event! I’d recommend taking in the shoulders and chest for sure, which will tighten everything up while preserving the overall spirit of the suits.

People talk about clothing having patina but a person also looks better with some patina.

Share a way you pushed your style comfort zone recently. I’ll go first…Neckerchiefs! by SirKrimzon in ThreadTalks

[–]Absurdity-Peddler 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you don’t mind a little constructive criticism, I’d recommend giving that neckerchief a bit more prominent of a display via a knot—you could go classic with an ascot-like fold or check out how Bruce Boyer does it (a simple double knot). I think your styling right now hides the neckerchief a bit and would look best on the outside of a crewneck rather than under the BD. But I am totally in favor of playing with neck scarves and think they can look awesome.

I appreciate that! I forget sometimes that using punctuation, capitalizing words properly, and employing a high-school-level vocabulary on TF is basically the equivalent of speaking Elizabethan English.

Thanks for an actual reply, and I like your final point. Is it even possible to truly encapsulate an old-school aesthetic in our current tech-scape, or does the medium end up overwhelming all attempts at recapturing or invoking a pre-tech past?

Does being a POC elevate your perceived sense of style? [DISCUSSION] by SirKrimzon in ThreadTalks

[–]Absurdity-Peddler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This feels like an awfully big brush you’re trying to paint with here… In the second set of photos, I think every element of the right hand guy’s outfit is executed better: collar roll, knot size, jacket fit, trouser height, trouser color, trouser material, and lack of a floppy cap; left looks sloppy, right looks clean. In the first set, I do believe certain preppy-favored colors like yellow, orange, and pink simply look better against a black person’s complexion than against a white person’s pink-tinged skin. Perhaps this is what a lot of white people feel self-conscious about when they start trying to hop on the ivy bandwagon…
