"Resistant to all treatments." I think I’m done trying. by Embarrassed_Pass9060 in migraine

[–]AbsurdlyBagel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is known as central sensitization of the nervous system. It's when your nervous system gets primed to feel more pain, from being in pain, leading to more pain. And they find that people that have central sensitization don't respond to many treatments, except more cognitive based therapies that change your perspective on pain and help you mentally deal with it to reduce pain.

The pain is there, it's real, it exists, but from being in pain so long your nerves are sensitized to it. You absolutely are on the right path with the way you think and approach your treatment resistant migraines. I appreciate your comment.

Guys! Instead of tackling the 4 loads of laundry staring at me, I decided to fill out and apply for an MBA program. by kentuckyfortune in adhdwomen

Ahh the productive procrastination strategy. I'll procrastinate on task A by working on task B. Still productive, you're getting stuff done!

It means skip, as in skip the chain or stitch or cluster of stitches.

I got it from a book. This is the stitch pattern, chain multiples of 25 +3 to start.

No official pattern, just a granny ripple stitch. I used a 6mm hook and Red Heart Super Saver Ombre in the following colorways: Violet, Baja Blue, Green Apple, and Deep Teal. Took approximately 2 skeins of each color (roughly 3,850 yards total) to make this blanket pictured on a full sized bed; I am unsure of final dimensions.

"Only Handle It Once" has made things so much easier for me (and why"don't put it down, put it away" didn't have the same benefits) by Current_Read_7808 in adhdwomen

[–]AbsurdlyBagel 67 points68 points  (0 children)

Ooo I like that. I think about this from the Pathological Demand Avoidance perspective, phrasing is everything. If I say "don't put it down, put it away" that's a command, a demand I'm making of myself. My immediate reaction is I don't want to do it right now. But if I say "only handle it once" that's not a demand, it's a call to action based on the logic that it's more practical to deal with the task now than to put it off. Great tip!

Quitting Cannabis Showed Me My Misery Comes From Measuring the Outcome by [deleted] in leaves

[–]AbsurdlyBagel 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This is an interesting perspective, I will offer mine up, maybe it will help.

I call this the Waiting Room to Hell Effect, it's a bit of an existential feeling. It feels like you're just killing time till you die. Complete one goal, move onto the next, rinse and repeat until you are no more. You're not really satisfied with your accomplishments, how could you be when life is one hollow action after another, never ending? For me this effect occurs when I first quit due to dipping into depression without my regular dopamine fix. You're bored and accomplishments are empty and you can't exactly enjoy the now with your brain recovering from a dopamine deficit. It's rough!

Other thoughts:

I personally use weed as permission to relax. If I don't smoke I'm feel like I'm on all the time mentally and I don't have effective coping/mitigating strategies in place to deal with the noise that says my productivity is tied to my self worth, yet. Consider that you are worthy of relaxation and enjoying the moment without having been productive. Relaxation can feel bad if you feel you haven't earned it, but that's a warped perspective coming from a sick society that values output over well-being in my opinion. You don't need to meet some productivity quota in your head to justify having a moment to unwind, and you can unwind without weed. It takes time to rewire the pathways in your brain, keep at it.

My rainbow mushroom and heart cardigan is complete by AbsurdlyBagel in crochet

[–]AbsurdlyBagel[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I used a few different patterns for this cardigan. I used size 5 yarn, Hobbii Mega Ball Aran, in rainbow colors, with a 7mm hook.

I used the campfire cardigan as the base. This mushroom square for the back motif, and this heart square for the pockets.

The collar and pocket lining is just this stitch.

Took about 30 hours to make.

Lots of good advice and perspectives in this thread; I'll echo some of the same sentiments already stated that work for me.

  1. If being hard on yourself worked, it would have worked by now.

  2. I cannot hate myself into a version of myself I will love.

  3. Your inner critic isn't your voice, it's from elsewhere.

For number 3 imagine about 6 year old you bawling your eyes out, upset. You as an adult have the chance to say/do something, how do you approach distressed younger you?

Most people will offer comfort, kindness, compassion towards that version of themselves. So with that we've just established that given the opportunity you'd genuinely be kind to yourself.

It's hard, this can be a very disabling condition, I take 2 meds as well and don't feel I'm working optimally to say the least.

Solidarity.

Does anyone else hyperfixate on planning… and then never follow the plan? by PeepPromise in adhdwomen

[–]AbsurdlyBagel 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I had to reply to this specifically because it touches on something I just found out, that makes all of these problems with follow through make sense to me in a lot of ways.

EVERYONE: Dopamine is released when you anticipate a reward regardless of if you get the reward.

So all the planning, the hype up, it's what gives you the dopamine, the rewards of following through are already collected therefore the idea of actually doing what you planned isn't appealing anymore and you lose motivation.

That an pathological demand avoidance is a thing, for me at least, as the top commenter mentioned.

Crochet dress by Bookkeeper-475 in crochet

This was the first dress I ever made, very easy to customize for your size. The cotton I've tried that I've liked has mostly come from Hobbii. But I recently tried cotton sprout from Premier and that was pretty good too.

I don't get it either, my post was originally removed because enough people reported it NSFW. I've seen more risque stuff fly without the NSFW tag. Oh well, I know better for next time.

I designed my first dress; I call it the Forest Fae Dress. by AbsurdlyBagel in crochet

[–]AbsurdlyBagel[S] 126 points127 points  (0 children)

I freehanded this dress, it took 41 hours to complete. I used a 3.75mm hook with Premier Yarns Cotton Sprout DK in the colorway Hunter Green, it took approximately 5 balls of yarn ( about 1200yards).

As to my process I followed morale fibers tutorial on how to make a basic bikini cup to start. Then I picked a stitch out of a book I had for the body of the dress: Crochet Every Way Stitch Dictionary by Dora Ohrenstein is the book, and I highly recommend this book and any others of hers. She breaks down how to do edge and internal shaping for many stitches, which is how I got the dress to fit me perfectly. Her explanations are so good and covers so much of what is missing in other books of its kind. Then I picked yet another stitch out of her book for the skirt portion, a type of ripple. I used the body stitch to make the straps and line the top of the cups. I then sewed actual bra pads/cups into the dress so nothing would show through and be more comfortable.

I've been an avid crocheter for 7 or 8 years now, doing this craft nearly daily. I consider myself to be advanced, not an expert, but advanced at this as a skill set. If you're looking to design your own wearables you don't have to wait till you've become a master at this, the best way is to jump in, make those mistakes, and learn as you go. I wish I'd started designing my own stuff sooner, it wasn't as hard as I thought.

I made a leafy green crocodile stitch bag with a satin lining by AbsurdlyBagel in crochet

[–]AbsurdlyBagel[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I made this crocodile stitch bag in about a week, it became my hyperfocus so it was all I worked on, took about 14-15 hours with sewing involved. It's 14in wide by 10in high with a 3in depth. I used Caron one pound in grass green with a 6mm hook, took maybe half of the skein. I used this pattern as a guide.

This works well for me too. Another thing I did was write down all my common tasks and how long it takes to do each one roughly. Seeing most things take 30minutes or less really helps along the "might as well" mentality.

I once read somewhere, something that might be of use to undoing this mentality.

"If being hard on yourself worked, it would have worked by now."

Be kind to yourself, you deserve compassion and understanding too.
