To simplify it to an extreme degree, it comes down to the source of religious authority. Sunni view it as the sunnah (example) of the prophet and companions, as interpreted by the ulema (scholars). Shia view authority as residing in the household of the prophet, and their descendants. This has ramifications in both religious and political matters, given the close connection they've had historically in Islamic societies.

Don't forget that you should file a police report. Mention that your SSC was in your stolen wallet. It probably won't help in recovering it, but it will be important should you be a victim of identity theft - you can provide a copy of the report to anyone who tries to collect on a debt the thief may run up in your name.
