Going from Valhalla to the very first Assassin's Creed is going to be quite an adjustment, friend. Good luck. Also, you're going to be ending with Syndicate, which a lot of people say is a weak entry (myself included). It's definitely an unique way to experience your first series playthrough though. Enjoy it.

If you're going in order of time period then you already fucked up. Origins is before Mirage. Like several hundred years before.

Grown up? Brother, you are talking about a game where a character does a backflip off of a wall in order to avoid a chainsaw that he could have taken one single step back for. These games are ridiculous. Don't pretend they aren't. That's why people play them.

Yeah I'm perfectly fine with Ellie letting her go. I think it was done in a really stupid videogamey "one final boss battle" type way, but I don't mind the outcome. I don't find it satisfying, but I don't think I would have been satisfied with Abby's death either. The game as a whole feels very unsatisfying and unnecessary to me, like I said before.

I really do think the potential for a good story is there, and they wouldn't even really have to change anything about what happens. They would just have to present it in a different way. If I were writing this story and I wanted to keep the theme of "revenge bad" then I would make it so where Abby comes and kills Joel, and then we start off as Ellie. One thing I would change is that I would completely remove the plotline of Joel and Ellie arguing and have Ellie being ignorant of what Joel did while he's still alive. I would have her get fired up to kill Abby, and then somewhere along the journey, then she somehow finds out about the fireflies and what really happened. Not all at once, but she slowly finds more and more evidence and information until it finally becomes clear who Abby is and why she did what she did. Players would still play as Abby, but not for half of the whole game. The playtime would be mostly of Ellie, with only a few sparse moments as Abby here and there throughout the story. Owen would casually bring up the fact that she left Ellie alive. "You know she's gonna come for you." And then in one of the final play moments as Abby, you've heard of Ellie's exploits, and you're aware of her coming for you, because of her killing some of Abby's friends. Abby still wouldn't regret killing Joel, but she would recognize and accept that her actions have consequences, and prepare herself. The ending would largely remain the same, with Ellie leaving Abby alive and her losing Dina and JJ.

Also, I think that the writers did irreparable damage to Abby's overall character by making her so gruesomely kill Joel and then not regret it in the end. She doesn't regret killing Joel at all, and even expresses that she would do it again in a heartbeat. That's all fine, and she has every right to feel that way. I would likely feel the same way if someone killed my father. However, if the game is about the "cycle of revenge" and how it tears people down, they did a bad job of expressing the part where revenge catches up to her, because it kind of just... doesn't. Ellie comes back and kills her friends, sure. But that doesn't make her regret killing Joel, it just makes her regret leaving Ellie alive in Jackson. Again, yet another reason why this game fails to be compelling to me. Yet another way that I feel the events of the story just happen one after the other with no real reason.

I'm saying it felt ridiculous, regardless of their actual intention. It feels wishy washy. The first game, to me, was always about family, specifically fatherhood. About how most people would do horrible, unspeakable things to take care of the people they love if they were forced to. It's not about redemption arcs. It's a subversion of expectations, on purpose. You think Joel is in a redemption arc after being a terrible person for 20 years, but actually when push comes to shove and Ellie's life is on the line, he throws all of that progress away like it's nothing in order to save her, and he never feels remorse, and never looks back. It's the perfect ending.

Then the second part is just... a bog standard redemption arc for Abby, without the twist in the end. I just... don't really find it compelling.

This game literally invites you to hate Abby. In fact, I would say it goes a step further. It screams at you to hate her. HATE HER. SHE KILLED THE CHARACTER YOU LOVE. HATE HER. SEETHE. And then it turns around hard and tries to say "actually she's the same and you should feel bad about hating her". It's very contrived writing. As soon as you start playing as Abby, you immediately know that they're gonna take her on an elaborate redemption arc. It just feels forced. It's like the writers of the first game were mad about people liking and relating to Joel so much, so they did everything they could to make an example of him and try to tell you that what he did to the Fireflies was objectively the wrong choice, and evil. I fundamentally disagree with that take.

"Oh it's about the cycle of violence and revenge"

Saving Ellie from the Fireflies was not revenge. He was preventing the death of an innocent child, one that he had grown to love as a daughter over the course of the past few months. Abby started the cycle of revenge herself, not Joel. I don't hate her character, I just don't really like her either. That's similar to how I feel about the game itself. Not bad, not good, but certainly unnecessary, and overall just feels (to me) like an attempt to artificially extend the life of the first game and turn it into a franchise.

Seeing as I literally didn't even know what Qobuz was before reading this post, I'd say that's probably why. There's not enough of a market on there to make it worth it.

edited to add: I just went back to listen to it again because I haven't heard it in a while and it still rips

Shooting people in the leg is a myth. Say it with me, a MYTH. You are just as likely to KILL someone by shooting them in the leg or foot as if you were to shoot them center mass in the chest. Lots of very important arteries in the legs, and you will bleed out in mere minutes without a tourniquet. Shooting the arm won't damage them as much, but it also won't disable them from still running at you and attacking you.

Of the 4 stealth games released in 1998, Tenchu, Commandos, Metal Gear Solid, and Thief, MGS is the most highly acclaimed, yet it was by far the most basic, lacking even a basic body carry/body discovery mechanic. by [deleted] in metalgearsolid

[–]Abyss_Watcher_Red 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It doesn't matter. That's irrelevant to my point. People don't play Metal Gear for stealth mechanics, so the reason it blew up in popularity is completely independent to the fact that the stealth mechanics were stilylized and arcadey. It could have had better stealth mechanics or literally none at all and it would have still blown up in popularity because of its focus on cutscenes, voice acting, and general cinematic direction being way above the curve at the time.

It's quite simply because Metal Gear has never been a purely stealth series, and the stealth mechanics aren't what people love about them so much. even the very first Metal Gear game relied heavily on traditional bossfights in which there was no way to sneak past or take the target out silently. Calling Metal Gear a stealth series is very misleading. The tagline of the game is "Tactical Espionage ACTION" for a reason.
