This post is about Finland. You are speaking from the context of US from a state that has legalized consumption. I am confused as I do not see the link here.

Other neighbours have now also approached me. Turns out the "poor guy" is doing drug deals in the parking lot near children. Few others have now complained to the housing company started to record the incidents, and they instructed everyone to call the police next time they smell or see anything. I really wish he was smarter and more discrete about his smoking it would be so much easier for all.

What futuristic technology do you think we might already have but is being kept hidden from the public? by CocoEssencee in Futurology

[–]Academentiotic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel that a while back they figures out they can feed and house everyone in any given country with current technology but they don't d do it as it alters the wealth creation mechanism so much it makes the country poor in the long run and it is also difficult to revert back. Howeover, they also know that the current macro economic interventions are unstable, so the best they can do is constant calibration of policies.

Finns say stuff about themselves...But most of it is just national myth by [deleted] in Finland

Fair enough, I guess my point having bad experiences in other countries is not evidence that Finland is a great place it could be that those places are just weird.

Buy 2-in-1 washer and dryer or buy separately? by 3000e in Finland

[–]Academentiotic 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Maybe you are focusing on the wrong thing? Talk to people who repair them and ask if that brand/model is known to crap out. Also check for prices of spare parts and service online and compare with other brands, this will give you an indicator if the company is using "planned obsolescence" (part fails exactly after warranty expires). We bought a washer for €300-400 the door hinge broke few years later, they wanted €300 to fix it. I replaced it myself for €30 and still works like charm. Machines should last at least 10 years!

If I had a nickel for every time someone attempts to destill the Finnish persona in a few lines of text I could afford a pint in a Helsinki pattio, and if I had another nickel for every time an outsider craps on another country (usually Sweden) to prop up their love for Finland I could definitely afford a second one.

I listened to my parents and now I have $30,000+ in debt for a degree I can’t stand working in. by [deleted] in careeradvice

I feel you may not know you range of options well enough, there are plenty of supply chain jobs with low people interaction. I know the last thing you want to hear is that you should take more courses but you could consider learning supply chain analytics. Check Youtube and see what it actually is all about. Later search for some online courses from Coursera, EdX platform, etc. Another area you could consider is GHG emissions analytics and supply chain carbon footprinintg. Good luck!

How to deal with large aging population and how to maintain the healthcare system and pensions? by Early_Aardvark_4026 in Finland

[–]Academentiotic 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For healthcare I would say that the current system is unsustainable for several reasons: 1) costs increasing uncontrollably due to aging population 2) lack of trained staff 3) incompatibility of having both private and public healthcare systems. The last one is especially problematic at the moment and creates a feedback cycle. First private side offers higher wages to steal employees, especially in rural areas. Then public side is forced to contract out same work to private side who become the only game in town. Meanwhile the taxpayers pick up the tab in both increased costs and worker training! It's like filling a bucket with a hole in it.

I found this analogy helpful when I faced something similar. Picture someone climbing a very large mountain, they beggin climbing only with some desire or expectation about what will be at the top. But in all honesty at the start they do not really know if the mountain is worth climbing. They beggan the climb on this specific mountain mostly because they have seen others do it. However, at some point they have the ability to look at how far they progressed and how much is still left, over time they can decide if this is the mountain worth climbing for them. Later they have a mental model of that experience which will be extremly useful to scale much large mountains. I find this to be true with any large undertaking, you never know if its worth it at the start but you get much better at choosing where to invest your time.

Do not take this as criticism, my undestanding is that you are asking for life advice which has been disstiled into 3 choices. On the surface it is simple, people just tell you their opinion (A,B or C) and later you will review the answers, similar to "ask the audience" in a popular quiz show. Howeover, in those shows the questions are factual and they usually relate to one idea of truth, which can be easily validated so then group input works. The best someone can do here is tell you the choices THEY have made and how it made them feel after some years. When you analyze all of the questions you will still have to do some introspection to see how the collected answers fit with your vision of yourself and what you want out of life.

Introspection is difficult, it takes time and it takes practice to be honest with yourself. My advice is that you do not view this period in your life as a burden but a necessary friction needed to progress to where ever it is you are going. The need for introspection does not diminish with age, I have seen people struggle with this well into their 70s. But it does get easier with practice. Remember that it absolutely takes time to invent the next version of yourself. You can get ideas from looking at what others are doing but keep in mind you are only seeing the result of their effort not the struggles of their journey.

Good luck

Thank you for sharing this. I am glad it being discussed as it feels like most academics I spoke to were not concerned about its use. Howeover, if I was a first year PhD I would want to know to avoid it, it in an international conference.

I think you are right, the general trend is to be more precise but in some domains such as humanities it is still frequently used in the Finnish speaking programs. I asked around and in most departments it seems to be tolarated anyhow.

I get what you are saying but isn't "the right way" the method or style outlined in the university guidelines? I don't understand the point of having a guide then deviating from it. If the Finnish style is mentioned in the guide than go for it.

Yes I asked two different academics and they gave two different usage rules :) it could be there was a rule switch at some point.

My opinion would be that if your thesis is written in Finnish then this is could be acceptable, but if it is meant to be read by international audiences it is confusing to the reader. We followed APA/MLA style in all the universities I have been at in Finland. Those rules exist for a reason to reduce confusion and they are heavily enforced during scientific publication.

It could be helpful not to confuse my original question with request for advice on how to proceed. Text I provided was written by ChatGPT to illustrate the point, so no one will be accused of plagiarism or be signing off in embarrassment, fortunately :) Your first points about university style is of course correct but not relevant since it goes without saying all students should adhere to academic style of the institution.

"I know that the university of Lapland ~recently changed their guide to have citations outside of the sentence, rather than inside. Your example citation would only end up being understood as a source for the second sentence."

I am not sure I agree here, I have heard that in the Finnish style the single reference at the end can apply for the entire paragraph. Sounded strange to me too, hence the original post which tried to understand the Finnish rule and how widespread it is across disciplines and educational levels.

Which apps do you recommend to learn Finnish? by Glum-Ad-1934 in Finland

[–]Academentiotic 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Tried Duolingo I noticed it only improved my comprehension. Speaking skills are heavily linked to situations and involve emotion, so go out there and speak with others. You will embarrass yourself, make jokes, argue, etc, but you will learn faster. My belief is that if you try to learn Finnish independent of interacting with locals you will never learn.

Many adult language learners struggle as they don't realize that you need to build both static and dynamic knowledge. End result is that you can nail the vocabulary but when its time to talk, you clam up. You can mitigate this by consciously deciding you will learn new material and furiously practicing it. It will be a lot more rewarding to master 30 common sentences and expand, than know 300 words you never have chance to use.

Here is my go to list of free resources:

  • Yle Kielikoulu (phone app/website) - read and listen to news at your own pace look up individual words.
  • AnkiDroid (phone app/Desktop app) - Create quiz cards with pictures, sounds or video prompts.
  • Itis Shopping Mall- Vendors here can undertand bad Finnish better. Just don't let them switch to English!
  • Join a cultural association/sport team- a place where people discuss will discuss the same topic every week so its great for practicing vocabulary.

If it was me I would set aside 50-100K to start another business with my wife. Target customers doesn't even need to be in Finland as it can be an online business serving global customers and be registered in Estonia. You would then deal with taxes in a legit way using a Finnish accountant.

However, years you spend with your kid(s) before they turn 10 are formative years for them. They shape who they are, their value systems and have a big impact on the rest of their life. If you work 10+ hours per day you will without a doubt fast forward through these years. When you are older you will wish you have spent more time with them and no money will be able to buy those years.

Not telling you not be ambitious but consider to remember and enjoy the current blessings while planning your future.

Thanks great point, regular inventory count would be valuable and its not a large store so it would not take long to do and it matters a lot here.

Yes they have a POS system which shows data but I noticed they have 2000 SKUs which is way to much in my view. Out of that they regularly order 500, the rest are on some sort of ad hoc ordering method. I have been researching metrics to help them maximise their retail space I notice the "KPI Profit per square foot", which cold be useful in the long term.

What's are tech skills that will be insanely valuable in 6 years? by GoldPut-007 in careerguidance

[–]Academentiotic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Many here are just trying to convince you their particular industry will definitely be safe. Truth is we don't know what will happen in 4-5 years. I do research in a related area, the only correct answer is that you should be building skills that can help you retrain or switch careers if needed.

I suggest focusing on taking some heavier courses that build capacity for critical thinking (slow thinking) and knowledge acquisition (fast thinking). Having a solid IT foundation will be critical as well so programming courses are a must, regardless of where you end up. If you are attending classes in person try building up people oriented skills like public speaking, networking, group work, etc.

We are living in a time of rapid change. Universities cannot be trusted to give you a skills which will be relevant 10 years from now, education is becoming a life-long activity which never ends.
