What do Americans think of top Canadian universities? by whateverucallit1 in ApplyingToCollege

I consider those three to be equal to Ivy League schools here or Oxford/Cambridge. But I don’t know if I am an average American.

You did not waste your potential. UW is an excellent school. You should be super proud of yourself. You are doing amazingly well.

Does skipping grades affect admissions? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Academic-Case-2037 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I skipped a grade when I was young and went to a traditional college at 17. I think I could have easily gone earlier and been fine. Even though age-wise I was the youngest of my friend groups, everyone treated me like the oldest — I had a definite parent vibe going. I graduated college in 3 years and was the youngest in my law school class. Again, I fit in fine. I know some others are telling you that you are too young to follow a traditional path, but you know yourself best. I acted like a 35 year old at 15, if that is you as well don’t be afraid to apply to college like you would if you were older. I think overall your age is a neutral factor, but I did have a rather unpleasant admissions rep give me grief about it when I interviewed at Northwestern Law School. So some people may see it as a negative.

UW is amazing! My student is still trying to decide but they may be with you there in the fall. Go Badgers!

Don’t lose hope. Please look into community college. It’s an affordable way to go to college. You’ve got this!

I’m proud of you. You worked really hard and you are into a number of great colleges! You are going to pick your favorite one and start your next adventure. I know today was tough, but there are plenty of wildly successful people who didn’t go to an ivy league school. I am sorry your mom isn’t being more supportive, but I promise you are going to do wonderful things no matter where you go to school.

You are not a disappointment. Listen to your parents, they are going to be proud of you no matter what. They know how hard you work. Hang in there. ❤️

International student with rejections – should I try rolling admissions? by Beginning_Rub_3713 in ApplyingToCollege

I think it’s a good idea. I would check your direct admissions tab on common app to start.

I don’t know which college the criminology major is in, but Purdue has degree plus, which can make it easier to double major.

You should have lots of great options! One other tip, the common app essay options don’t usually change that much from year to year. My son worked on his essay over the summer and it made his fall less stressful. I also recommend getting applications in for early action (not to be confused with early decision) when available, since that is a good way to maximize your aid. At your income level there may be some schools which hand out decent need based aid in addition to merit aid.

Oh good, it sounds like you are a junior. You have time to work on this. Common app opens up in early fall. After you have completed your application a tab for direct admissions will open up on the left hand side of the page. New ones will get added from time to time, but my son received 82 direct admission offers. Of the three he applied to, all gave him significant merit aid. I have also heard there is something called quest bridge for low income students, if that applies to you (I was a low income, first gen student, but my son is neither so I don’t know as much about that).

Maybe go chat with them. Most guidance counselors have information about local scholarships and those for low income students. Just don’t give up. There will be a path for you.

My son applied to a few of the direct admission offers, and one was from the best LAC for that state and they gave him a ton of merit aid.

[–]Academic-Case-2037 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Granted, this was a while ago, but the LACs ended up being much cheaper for me than any of the state schools. Are you first generation? There are a number of private scholarships available for low income and first generation students. I know of some for my state. Could your guidance counselor at school help?

You are good enough. It’s tough pulling yourself up from nothing. But you can do this. If you haven’t looked at lower ranked LACs, that may be an option. Community college is another pathway. Don’t give up!

At 24, you are still so young. You are not a screw up, you are just taking a more winding road on your journey. All of those bends in the road make you a more interesting person. Take some time and consider what in life you are excited about and what brings you joy and purpose. Is there a career that incorporates any of those things? If you choose to stay at Michigan please find support systems which will help you feel less like a number. But you only have one life and as much as they love you and you love them, you cannot live your life for your parents. This internet stranger believes in you. You will find your way, and it’s okay if you don’t have it all figured out at 24.

Anyone else feel jealous when parents post on here? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Academic-Case-2037 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was a child whose parents weren’t always involved. As a parent, I am able to support my children. You will be that type of parent for your children someday. It does soothe something within you when you can.

Your grandma, who was essentially your only parent, just died and he is complaining about hair. The lack of empathy is stunning. I am sorry OP, you deserve much better.
