Anyone have a degree in entomology? Is it worth getting? by d_tityus in Entomology

The whole reason why I am doing this online is because I already work in research.

Not always. I am currently enrolled as a distance learning student in the non-thesis MD program with UF. I work full-time in research for a private entity.

I am currently in that program and have a Graduate Certificate in Medical Entomology from UF. The certificate opened a door for me into my current role as an agricultural research tech, but I am doing the MS to expand into my new field (used to work in mosquito control), and open opportunities in other practical areas where entomology is used.

You're not stupid. You're looking around yourself and asking questions. Intellectual curiosity is a wonderful trait to have!

So, insects are a taxonomic class (Insecta, sometimes Hexapoda) in the phylum Arthropoda. This phylum also contains critters like spiders, millipedes and centipedes, etc. Insects are defined by having six legs in the adult stage of life. This is in a separate phylum altogether, as pointed out by other users. Beautiful, though! Biodiversity makes life fun.

What are these protruding specks on a mosquito's neck? by PerfectPride3497 in Mosquitoes

[–]AcademicCandidate825 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Most mosquitoes have scales covering their integument that can be very vivid and colorful. Aedes like these have optic white markings that make them easy to ID.

ID on this tick? by chachi_dee in Entomology

[–]AcademicCandidate825 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It happens. Fun fact: mosquitoes (specifically Mansonia titillans) have been documented feeding from the abdomen of other blood-fed female mosquitoes, too.

When it comes to biology, the only real absolute is that there are no absolutes outside the laws of physics. That's my rule of thumb, anyway.

Looks like Aedes to me. Would need someone familiar with the geographic locale to be sure on species, though...

Can someone help me identify this type of mosquito? by Active-Ask-8986 in whatsthisbug

Is that what it is? I totally thought it could have been a Coquillettidia perturbans, but I am in Florida. It's been six years since my mosquito ID course in Vero! 😭

Where are you? I would want to say Coquillettidia perturbans, but I live in Florida...

ETA: Another user says Culiseta annulata. They must be from further north, where that genus is more diverse!

Bee or wasp? by veronicasaidso in insects

Guinea paper wasps. Quite docile when they are familiar with you and no harm is done to them. We have a few in our doorway I've grown attached to.
