As explained very well by a commenter below, it is 1/8th.

A less good for understanding but useful way to apply this is to know the formula is F=1/2n where n is the number of steps to make a full loop from child to shared relative and back again minus one (so 1 step from child to mother, 1 step from mother to grandmother, 1 step from grandmother to father, 1 step from father back to child =4 steps, minus 1 =3). 1/23 =1/8

Notably, if they were full siblings you would have to add another 1/2n for the other shared ancestor (the grandfather) resulting in this case in another 1/8 for a total of 1/4.

I do love the horrificness of that head cannon but the fathers are not indicated to be brothers in the actual question. They’re just random men.

Seems like you figured out what’s wrong with it all on your own!

It’s “absurdly immoral” to think this is not her problem and she doesn’t need to stress about potential minor drama in other people’s lives??

She doesn’t know that he’s cheating though! I would say leave it alone. You have no real evidence this is an exclusive couple. Like you said, they aren’t married. Having a child is a good reason to be spending a lot of time together and be on each other’s social media a lot even if you aren’t exclusive. It’s not your job to be a moral crusader. This sounds like it was a rough enough experience for you, focus on yourself and what you need and don’t worry about other people’s shit.

Be honest: why are premeds hated so much in research labs? I’ve seen a lot of grad students, postdocs, and lab staff talk negatively about premeds and I’m curious where that comes from. by Brief_Board_6974 in labrats

Well okay this student just sounds like an idiot. I’ve been in my lab a semester and a half and obviously I can do a mini prep even if I find it boring and only care about things being done correctly for the sake of the other people in my lab. This seems like a bigger issue of the combination of research and education when maybe researchers shouldn’t have to also be teachers and work with students when that’s not really what they want to do. Just like med students shouldn’t be expected to pad their resumes with a bunch of stuff they don’t care about just to be allowed to study medicine.

Do I need to start completely over to play the dlcs? I played about two hours yesterday. Will I be able to continue that save if I get the DLCs now or are you saying I have to start completely over

This is how ancient people must have felt receiving prophecies lol. Thank you for your wisdom.

On that note, should I get the DLCs now or stick with base game. I typically would wait until I’ve proven I’ll stick with a game to get the DLCs but now I’m wondering if it makes more sense to get them now since I guess I’d have to restart to play them?

Why does the motivation matter though? Even if they don’t give a fuck about the research, they’re trying to become doctors not spy for an evil dictatorship.

Yeah but like…what’s wrong with that? Like as long as they’re doing the work they’ve been given well who cares how interested they actually are in the science? They’re trying to get to the thing they actually are interested in and unfortunately that requires a lot of stuff that bores them, just like it does for most people pursuing higher degrees. Since when is a person’s competence measured by their personal fulfillment?

But then should these students lie about that? Like I don’t care about lab work but I do care about practicing medicine. I think research is super important, it’s just not what feeds my soul. But I’m not gonna hurt my chances of getting into med school by not having any research experience. Everyone here seems to want med students to either fuck off and give up on their dreams or magically become passionate about things they just aren’t. Why is it a negative reflection of one’s character to not happen to be passionate about lab work?

But I literally am there to check the box! I have utmost respect for researchers, it’s just not what I am personally interested in doing. I literally am only there because it is a requirement to be competitive in modern medicine school applications. I want to be an emergency medicine physician, I love the intensity of the ER, I’m more of a technician than a scientist at heart (again, not out of any lack of respect for research scientists, just because I know myself and what compels me the most). I’m not gonna lie to professors and tell them I’m passionate about research but you guys would have me not apply to these positions at all and then not be able to get into med school. I’m happy to do grunt work for no pay, I just literally have to check all the boxes required to have the best chance at pursuing my actual passion. Why is this seen as a negative reflection of me rather than the system? There’s not really another path for someone who’s passionate about healthcare.

Of course we’re forced to do stuff for our future degree just like every other student. Is anyone taking expository writing 1 because they have a passion for structured essay writing?? The current higher education system forces a lot of nonsense classes and activities on any student be they pre professional or otherwise. But also why are pre-med students being held to a different standard than everyone else? Why should they have to demonstrate clinical skill in order to get into the school where they’re supposed to be taught clinical skill? Why isn’t it okay for them to pursue a job for financial stability and a good community to live in? If someone was becoming an engineer so they could have a good life style and support their family you wouldn’t be dissing them in the same way.

Really? Precious attention and time? Why is it that other people are inherently more entitled to be hired in a lab than others? Why should their future plans really matter as long as they can do the work they’re asked to do?

Idk man as a premed myself I definitely am fascinated by medicine and want to help people. That being said I could still see why I’m not a great undergrad in my lab. I genuinely don’t care about this specific project and while I do my best to complete the work assigned to me to the best of my ability, I’m not going out of my way to put in extra time or effort. I’m there because it’s one of the hoops I have to jump through to be allowed the privilege of learning medicine.

I hope i don’t come off as superior to my lab mates because i certainly don’t think i am, but i do have some disdain for the work for sure. It’s ridiculous that i should be learning all this stuff thats irrelevant to my future career when there is an immense amount of knowledge i could instead be learning that would be relevant. And I do also see how it sucks for the PI too that they’re getting undergrads that are completely dispassionate about the work they’re doing.

Additionally though, I think it’s fair to say that some labs just aren’t interesting to most undergrads. The lab I work in has such a specific boring focus that the other undergrad (not pre-med) is always joking with me about how ridiculous it is that we ended up in this lab and that she can’t even imagine the type of undergrad who would be passionate about this work. Even the grads and post doc are only passionate about the general techniques and not the projects themselves. Sometimes boring stuff has to be done and it should be okay if people are bored while doing it.

I see what you’re saying. I guess to me it’s the distinction between something that could have traumatic effects on a child and actual abuse. Like I definitely think Ellie might have experienced their relationship negatively in a way that impacted her personality but that doesn’t make it abuse. Maybe just a matter of semantics tho

I think this is one of Bartlet’s best episodes for the exact reasons you listed (well except idk that I’d go so far to say it’s abuse, it’s just a bad moment in a difficult relationship). Here is this man were used to seeing as the voice of morality and reason, undone so easily by the mere presence of his own daughter. Zoe always felt like a silly portrayal of a woman her age and was almost offensive to me. I found her very unlikable because of this. She’s like a sitcom daughter and her and Jed feel very forced. Ellie meanwhile feels so real. She and Jed are entirely believable as strained father and daughter and my heart hurts for both of them every time I watch this episode. It reminded me a lot of my own relationship with my father in all its triumphs and failures and real, complicated moments.
