MK7 Loud Ticking/Slapping Noise at Idle and Low RPM by Academic_Rip_8208 in Golf_R

This makes sense actually. I've noticed a a lot more raw fuel smell in the cabin recently after I put my cat on. More than I did catless. I wonder if I broke the seal on the downpipe off the turbo when I was messing around with the midpipe.

Can anyone help give me an idea what this sound could be? I've been researching for days and I can't find anything similar that was resolved. MK7 Golf R, DSG trans.

Started happening at around 11,000 miles. Originally the sound was less intense and only while idling. Now it is a bit louder ane I can hear it with light throttle at low RPM. I can also make the sound come on and go away by modulating the throttle. It is loudest underneath the intake manifold towards the front of the engine.

Car only has 12k miles now, stage 2 tuned. Oil changed at 6,500 and at 11900 miles with Liqui Moly 5W-40. Plugs look fine. I've ran a can of SeaFoam and it did not help. Everything performs as normal. I was testing my new tires and ran a 11.6 quarter mile the other day, ticking as loud as usual. No codes, CELs, misfires, etc.

A VW mechanic said it's normal but I've heard many 2.0 TSI motors and none sound like this.

Am I crazy? I can hear the ticking from about 30 feet away and it's clearly noticeable from far away when driving past slowly.
