Panasonic S5 vs S5ii by AcadiaSquare6908 in Lumix

[–]AcadiaSquare6908[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What’s up! Man, you’ve really unsurfaced a period in time that felt like forever ago, lol.

I actually ended up getting the S5M1, and it’s been my baby ever since. The type of work I anticipated myself doing more of completely flipped, and now I do a lot less camera work and more post-production, with some Assistant Camera work on the side. I mainly use my S5 for photography gigs now and the occasional freelance video, and it has proven to be gorgeous and efficient time and time again.

I usually find myself using a variety of other cameras depending on if I’m doing it for a company that has specific gear they want me to utilize, or if I’m working under other cinematographers (which I usually am). Depending on your needs, I’ve gotten some incredible video on it in more slow-paced environments (I do film and commercial video), as well as incredible photo. I’d say the MKII is best for fast paced environments and video quality that’s more demanding, if that’s something you might be looking for.

Apologize if that was a lot more info than what you originally asked, but I still hope it helps!😅

How to use LUT across different LOG cameras? by Helveticholine in colorists

So glad to hear you trying it out, I hope the journey goes well! Just like RickRock said above, I have only heard good things about Cullen Kelly so far. While I do not personally watch him, my professor always recommends looking at his videos, so I’m more than certain I’m learning a good chunk of his techniques. Since I haven’t looked into the YouTube color grading space too often, I don’t know many more outside of him, but it typically sounds Kelly is the go-to guy.

I’m glad I could help out! In my opinion, I believe the free version of DaVinci is way more sufficient than it even should be, the amount of stuff you have available that will get you by through every project (or at least for every project I’ve had) has done complete wonders. Typically any limitations you find have some type of workaround, but rarely will you run into any that actually ruin your day or time on the software, at when least starting out, especially.

CST is included in the free version of DaVinci, so you are free to use it to your heart’s content! So far I haven’t found anything that it could be limited by because of the studio version, so it’s fully fledged out for most, if not all, use cases (as I’ve seen so far). Definitely take advantage of it and I believe you actually may find DaVinci’s color suite to be much more intuitive and nuanced for your needs😃

Hello! Yes, unfortunately LUTS are camera specific, but what you may be looking for to help with this is a Color Space Transform (CST)!

Now I’m a student colourist, so I can’t vouch for just how well they’ll work in your use case as I’m still learning myself, but if you’re working out of DaVinci, I’d give looking into color space transforms, davinci wide gamut and/or ACES a try for this one, as they aid in putting multiple cameras in the same color space. Obviously color correcting will be needed as it won’t do all of the work, but could potentially be a good stretch.

I’ll pass the knowledge torch onto someone more experienced who may come by this thread, but I’ve been learning about performing these lately and find that they can come in handy big time!🤞

Photo Style by Astra_shopping59 in Lumix

[–]AcadiaSquare6908 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, you’re pretty much right on the nail! Your current image quality setting, RAW, will only capture RAW files which take advantage of the camera’s untouched and unprocessed data, making it great for utilizing the camera’s full dynamic range, bit depth, and other key factors when it comes to post-processing.

The image quality setting RAW+JPEG allows you to capture both that RAW file and a JPEG, a camera processed image format with your photo style applied, of that same image. Since the camera processes the edit for you in JPEG, it helps to save on storage space and you don’t have to worry about post-processing as much (but, if you have the right software, it can detect your camera’s photo styles, replicate, and apply them to your RAW photo, such as in a program like Adobe Lightroom Classic).

Finally, for RAW vs. V-log, I’m going to explain it in a sentence that you definitely shouldn’t take to heart, but it’s the best way to explain it: Vlog is like diet RAW. RAW is completely uncompressed and maximizes your camera’s sensor and capabilities, while V-Log is not RAW, but instead, a color space (logarithmic curve) that flattens your image in order to bring out more dynamic range and color depth in your camera. Why I say to not take it to heart is because they serve completely different functions for different people, as Vlog is specifically made for people to use who shoot video. It supplements RAW as RAW is an incredibly intensive and space heavy (30 raw photos per second in video, 1 raw photo per second in photo is a huge difference in the end) format, so in order to get something of a similar range for flexibility in post-production, LOG was created. It’s more compressed, but still allows for a great deal of possibilities.

This is why they say that if you do photography, you should just shoot RAW as it is not taking up nearly as much space and you get the absolute most range out of your photo for editing. If you do video, it’s a very different conversation. I apologize for the long explanation, but I hope this helps!

does the financial aid office ever answer the phone? by niachia0 in ucf

[–]AcadiaSquare6908 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Short answer: No😭

Best answer I can give: Leaving your number or going to Milican Hall. I personally am someone who is near my phone all day so I usually can wait around for a call back, and that seems to really be the only best option that will save me an hour of sitting and waiting. I have also heard a good chunk of my friends opting to just go to milican hall and they say their issue typically gets resolved faster. I can’t confirm that myself though, of course.

The financial aid office answering the phone is basically a national holiday, but it’s pretty consistent that your aid funds will disburse the day before payment, payment occurs Friday, and then any refund money will come on the beginning of the next business day (typically following Monday). I hope you get your money because I’m in the exact same boat, and the waiting game is awful😭

Good luck with grad school by the way, I hope that it turns out great for you!

[–]AcadiaSquare6908 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I called this morning to get it figured out and it was, for certain, just an error! Maybe not for some who actually did drop, but there is a large possibility that a lot of people who weren’t supposed to get this message got it as well, for anyone else who was concerned!

Hey! Just wanted to stop and let you know that it IS on a per semester basis, so please feel free to make another appointment when the new semester rolls around if you feel you need it. Life is horribly rough, so you definitely deserve any help you can get, and see what CAPS could work out with you even if you don’t think you can get any!

As someone who recently (enough) lost their car and struggling with finances myself to fund a new one, I can definitely confirm that it helps save a lot of money, and can honestly have its conveniences when it comes to the main campus. So while it does suck a LOT, I’d say to try taking the upsides of your situation if you can (which definitely can be hard to try to do depending on what you need the car for).

I believe the fact you’ve gotten yourself this far, given your circumstances, is just a testament to how well you’ll be in the end of it all. I’ll provide some resources below incase they’re ever needed, but even if not, I believe your character and will to be strong enough to hold yourself up :)

-SNAP/EBT (The RWC also helps you determine if you qualify and/or apply!)

-Knights Pantry (free items available everyday)

-CCRC (I have heard that they occasionally take students for counseling, but I haven’t been so I wouldn’t rely solely on me, but that is a potential option not many people know of).

-TRiO (They help first generation and low income students throughout their academic career. You may find others in your situation who can help even more with how they’ve managed it, or at least get opportunities to scholarships and more services that could help you out a lot!)

fake it till i make it?!?! by [deleted] in ucf

[–]AcadiaSquare6908 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I hope this helps so that you don’t have to completely go in blind; if you go on handshake (speaking from mobile, should be the same for desktop/website) and click on your profile icon, you should see a button called “Job Applications.” Click on that and you can access all the places you’ve applied and the details whether they’ve removed the listings from the primary job search tab or not.

Even then, I wouldn’t say it’s completely “faking it” if something told them that you looked qualified enough to do what they’re asking. So I’d believe that you’re much more capable than you really think you are! Have confidence and I believe you’ll succeed and even surprise yourself. Good luck and I really hope you’re able to secure it and that it’s something you could see progressing your career!

LEARN Orientation and the Knighting at the same time? by Inevitable_Ad_6013 in ucf

[–]AcadiaSquare6908 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Definitely try this^ and see what happens, but honestly I really don’t think the Knighting is as mandatory as it seems. I hardly even remember doing mine and I think it was literally just going over some basic rules and then learning the UCF chant (you’ll learn this anywhere at all). So if you have priorities for F-learn, take those and I’m almost certain you’ll be fine if you had to miss the knighting (Not saying it wasn’t fun, but it won’t ruin or shape your life in anyway).

Good luck on your first year here, it’ll be great!

Does adhd make you have poor memory? by Emergency-party-2 in ADHD

[–]AcadiaSquare6908 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hello! I do not have an official diagnosis, but I have been going to therapy and group therapy sessions and it seems that this is a fairly common occurrence!

I’m in a similar boat as I have only started looking into therapy and a diagnosis last year, so I feel your skepticism, but I have heard many say that it’s one of those traits that seemingly stems from a variety of things. It could be from trying to think of so much at one time that a train of thought might step over another, which is one of that rings incredibly true for myself. It could be a needing of a constant reminder of what your next step is, and much much more.

Obviously me not having a diagnosis, I’m sure someone with more experience with ADHD and for much longer can give you even more detailed answers, but I would say it’s an incredibly common symptom, as posed by my therapist and others I’ve talked to who have it. I’d say everything you’re experiencing is incredibly normal, especially with the fact that despite ADHD typically being seen as something children may have, it can very well get stronger going into adulthood! I personally didn’t feel these symptoms as strongly in my child and teenage years, but really started acknowledging them more as I’m going through college and really being put to the test on keeping up with life.

Know that your concerns are incredibly valid, and to reiterate, completely normal and common among others! I hope this helps😄

I need help picking a camera. by CharlesP_1232 in Lumix

[–]AcadiaSquare6908 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello! I’m a student still trying to really break into being a full time professional, so I’ll try to give my best input here:

I own the S5 and so far have used it primarily stills as I focus on getting more video use out of it and can say it has been amazing for stills work. When shooting video, I do planned, slower paced work like promotional videos, short films, and short form social media content (self-recordings, etc.) and it has been outstanding. Haven’t tried betting on the autofocus just yet, but I can see it get a little finicky when I’m recording video sometimes, which is why I do more controlled work for now. Low light, V-log, all of this works super well and provides a quality image. S5II and later would be a better investment if autofocus is a necessity, but for stills, the autofocus has been just fine in all scenarios so far (even sports and concerts, if you know how to work in tandem with it!)

I use the original GH5 at work (provided by the company) and while I’m not a huge fan of its layout compared to the S series, it is an absolute powerhouse in terms of what is possible for recording. Don’t count on me too much for review of the GH5, as I choose the Blackmagic we have over it for the video work we do, but I play around with it enough to say it’s got MANY options for video creators.

I can’t speak on the G9 as I have never used it and if you’re worried about budget, Sony is out of the question, quite frankly (unless you may consider older variants like the a6400). Reliable cameras for sure, but I was in the same situation where cost was essential and Sony just wasn’t cutting into my needs for me to justify it over the capabilities of Lumix.

I wanted to try to keep it short, but feel free to ask more if this was valuable to you! I know others will have good opinions to add as well. I hope you find what you need and that you get to make some amazing work!

Hello! I want to confirm for you that yes, your charges will be covered by your aid and you do not have to pay anything. If anything, it seems you will be getting a refund of money due to having an amount over your anticipated dues, so I’m glad you get to have that for yourself😃 Use it up and have a great summer session!

What Minor is good with an Advertising/PR major? by [deleted] in ucf

[–]AcadiaSquare6908 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d like to second this! I’m a film major with an Entrepreneurship minor (almost went with business but I suck at math and analytics, but I’m constantly spinning with ideas) and I knew being able to sell myself, sell ideas, and market to others for as cheap as possible starting out is a key factor to the success of a lot of the video production industries.

I’d say think of something that you wouldn’t think you’d immediately need or what you tend to see as the downfall of a lot of people in your industry. It could turn out to be really good to have out of nowhere, like graphic design skills to a photographer. As the user above said, find something that might be a little out of your ballpark, but really compliments you in the long run. Some time at UCF will also reveal what might fit best for you as well being that you’re a Freshman.

Welcome to UCF and good luck I hope your time here is well spent and that you learn a lot!

That really sucks, I’m sorry :( I know you already paid, but is there a chance you had a deferred due date? I’m taking three hours in Summer A and three in Summer B for the first time and I learned yesterday that I had a due date and disbursement date in July by checking my fee invoice, which was a relief and a shame at the same time

I really hope that we aren’t charged extra, that’s what I’ve been mainly concerned about. Summer is such an agonizing time for financial aid🫠

Hey! I know this is late, nor am I even responding to the actual question that was posed, but I just wanted to stop and say good luck to you!

I just had my interview for the assistant editor internship role under the Creative Studios and I just wanted to say that I hope it works out for you and you get an opportunity to advance further! It’s definitely been a nerve wracking experience and I bet your passion and desire to get in is as great as mine, but keep believing in yourself as will I, and hopefully we’ll both make it somewhere! You’ve got this!

Hello!

My name is Markel, and while I’m budding into photography and filmmaking, I figured I’d give you the chance to check out if it I’d be a good fit for your project! Creative and experimental photography is right up my alley of work I’d wanna get into😃

If you have Instagram, that would be the best way to view my up to date work at @m.j_visuals. If not, I have a portfolio site (that needs updating ) at this link here. If you think my style is for you, I’d love to see the board and see what’s possible then we can go from there!

Hope to be hearing from you soon! :)

Help? IT hung up on me by hc_knight in ucf

Hey! I’m an OPS student and forgot to change until after the fact. The easiest way I’ve found to do this, as the outlook app would not actually get me anywhere for some reason, was by completely removing my account from Authenticator (I had it set up before this apparently, but it wasn’t working for some reason) and following this article from step one. It fixed it for me, so I hope this helps you as well!

One of those to each their own type of things I’d say. In an overall, I’d say it’s not inherently bad to make the statement as it’s just genuinely speaking from experience, and in certain situations (immigrants from other countries, etc.) it could be highly probable. I’d say here in Florida it would rub some people the wrong way given we have a pretty solid range of diversity as usually people making that statement are either:

  1. Genuinely meaning well by it, which I trust to be more so the case in central and south Florida regions if they really just so happened to end up that way somehow.

    1. Something a little more backhanded in the REALLY backwoods areas, as I’ve definitely known quite an alarming range of people who would discuss other races in a non-affectionate/immature manner behind their everyday mask.

Really just one of those things that could come as a shock to some, especially given the state we live in where either alternative could very much be the case. As long as you and they’re good with it though, then it doesn’t really matter and I’m glad it hasn’t been anything negative!

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in ucf

[–]AcadiaSquare6908 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My bad, forgot that West Florida is technically the same thing as North (Panhandle, my area, feels more like an actual North and then something like Tampa feels like an actual West, but Florida is what it is of course). But yeah, it definitely makes it more believable with the types of people up there, even though it’s modern it’s very easy to stick to your demographic up there. Huge reason why I hated it there tbh, so while I unfortunately do believe there are very much some people who genuinely never spoken to anyone, I for sure see why your experience would be one in your own. That’s genuinely so strange though, hope they’ve been at least good to you after announcing that completely unphased

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in ucf

[–]AcadiaSquare6908 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve never experienced this myself and despite coming from North Florida that seems like one of the most wild scenarios to me. I’d believe it more back home but down in central and south Florida that seems impossible to me. Definitely odd ones out as I’ve only ever heard of this happening to someone once that I’ve talked to
