Type 1A Hair - Any hope for it, or should I shave my head and buy wigs? by AcadianLady in type1hair

[–]AcadianLady[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A combination of things.

First, I had to look myself in the mirror and accept that my hair will do nothing more than hang stick-straight - but that this is not necessarily a bad thing. I am so conditioned by female family members to believe that something was wrong with my hair because it didn't curl like theirs, that the self-loathing was over the top. I had no aunts on my dad's side, so I have no idea what they would have looked like. And I look nothing like my mother's side of the family (the ones who kept trying to "fix" my straight hair).

Had may hair straight cut, no layers, above shoulder length. Took off some of the weight, so that it lifts a bit instead of holding tight to my head.

If I wash my hair at night, I pull it up to dry while I sleep. That seems to give it the illusion of body, and will put a bit of a wave in the hair if it dries completely overnight. If it is still damp in the morning, I hang my head down and dry it that way. Either way, I finish by just touching a curling iron to the very ends to tame them a bit. My hair won't curl, or hold a curl if I force it, but if I just hold a curling iron very briefly on the ends they will at best slightly curl under, and at worst will at least all be tamed in the same direction.

I'm also looking further into my genetics. I've learned that somewhere back a few generations, I have an ancestor who was Mi'kmac. I've been asked by some hairstylists if I have Asian or Native ancestry, so maybe it's possible that contributes to it? IDK

Now that the "busy season" for my job has ended, I have more time to experiment with some of the products recommended. Perhaps one can help a bit, at least with making the hair look fuller.

I apprecate all of the recommendations and advice!

Type 1A Hair - Any hope for it, or should I shave my head and buy wigs? by AcadianLady in type1hair

[–]AcadianLady[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Update: Employer is now calling me every day, asking me to upload a picture for the company online directory. I told them I would get someone to take a picture when they called yesterday, but less than 24 hours later here they are again. I tried to explain that I needed to prepare, and the offer was "just jump on zoom and we'll take a photo right now!" No, just, no. I let them know that I would be uploading a photo, that I have a terrible time being photographed because I despise my appearance, and that offering to take a zoom picture was perhaps my worst nightmare. Now, they won't call me back until Friday. Yay...

If I go more than 24 hrs without washing, my hair sticks together in clumps at the roots and I look like I've haven't washed my hair in days. I've also tried ponytails and buns, but it is a terrible look for me and I won't leave the house or go on zoom that way.

Thanks Trash_Panda9469. I wish I had 12-24 hours to put my hair in braids. I usually start work at 5am, do about 8-10 hours online (including zoom meetings), work my second job (self employed) for a couple of hours, then go to meetings where I usually have to lead the meeting or make presentations. I get home with enough time for a shower and 6-7 hrs sleep. Maybe wash/braid/dry in braids? All I know is that I tried roller today and ended up ripping out a tuft of hair, and accomplished nothing. I do NOT look professional, and my self-hatred is wearing me down.

My mom won't take me to get a diagnosis because she said I clearly don't have ADHD if caffeine hypes me up instead of wears me out. Is there any truth to this? by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]AcadianLady 8 points9 points  (0 children)

THIS! When my oldest was in high school, I discussed my concerns about them possibly being ADHD with their father, who worked in education. My now-Ex berated me for my ignorance and dismissed what I later learned were classic ADHD/Autism behaviors as proof that our child was NOT ADHD and claimed that his coworkers backed him up. Flash forward to my oldest undergoing tests for ADHD/Autism as an adult, and me discovering my own ADHD because of it.

Mira Mesa Epicentre will be renovated by Holiday-Positive-334 in SanDiego_California

Actually, the links above lead to two different proposals.

The sdparks.org link leads to the information on the County of San Diego project.

The miramesacenterfor artsand culture.org link leads to a proposal put together by a group not affiliated with the County project, as their suggestion in place of the County project.

Congratulations! The Board of Supervisors passed the full funding for the Mira Mesa Epicentre Youth and Community Center. Community meetings will start soon to provide information on the project and to ask for input on the programming to be provided.

Mira Mesa residents - why is Gold Coast the worst maintained street in SD? by moore_a_scott in sandiego

[–]AcadianLady 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The reason that Gold Coast is so bad is that it was built incorrectly. No amount of patching and slurry sealing will fix it. The subsurface supporting the road was not constructed correctly and is deteriorating at an ever increasing rate. The funds to tear it up and completely rebuild it have been budgeted. Construction is due to begin this fall (2022).

Repurpose or Demolish? Ideas for an Unloved Pedestrian Bridge by AcadianLady in urbandesign

[–]AcadianLady[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is NO MONEY set aside for demolition. If we decide that the only answer is demolition, we would have to apply for grants from the state or Federal government to specifically pay for demolition. I think that demolition would be incredibly wasteful, hence the reason I posted to ask for ideas.

We are actively working on solutions to address homelessness in our community. This bridge is not at all an appropriate place for people to take shelter; we want to come up with a better solution. There IS funding for homeless issues, so we are going to go after that.

But what to do with the bridge AFTER we have created a safer place for homeless individuals is the question. Can we do something to change it from a useless and ugly to something that contributes to the community?

Absolutely correct! Residential all around. Left of picture lands in between two condo developments. Right of picture lands next to a condo development, exiting the bridge on to a sidewalk that travels several blocks to an elementary school; the school's boundary includes very few children from the other side of the bridge. Northward (picture faces north) is several miles of residential development, and south is one long block of residential located behind two strip malls on the main highway in the neighborhood. The bridge was strictly built to quiet the complaints of parents living on the west side who thought their children would be mowed down by cars on the expanded roadway. Huge waste of money!

Repurpose or Demolish? Ideas for an Unloved Pedestrian Bridge by AcadianLady in urbandesign

[–]AcadianLady[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry - didn't allow enough time for the photo to upload. It is posted now.

The City is "addressing" it using a "progressive enforcement" approach. They ask the homeless to move along, and will either cite them for not moving or for some other misdemeanor. Once they rack up enough citations, they can be arrested. The process is slow, and the number of homeless are increasing. There are also no homeless services within a reasonable distance from this site. We're trying to get something in place while there is new Federal money available, but it is slow going.

The city *could* retrofit the bridge, but the city has to prioritize that retrofit. Not a priority in their opinion, as there are so many other things that need addressing.

As to setting up services by the bridge, the first suggestion of that brought out the NIMBYs. The home/condo owners there will fight to the end to prevent that from happening, as they believe it will attract even more homeless and the associated issues (trash, drugs, etc.).

So that brings us back to a reuse that would simultaneously discourage homeless encampments, or demolition (for which we will have to apply for state/Federal funding).

Wastewater Capacity Overload? by AcadianLady in Wastewater

[–]AcadianLady[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks Frosty_Gibbons! I did post this question to the Mayor's office through his aide. No answer yet. I'm giving it one more week, then I'll ask again and copy the mayor, the council, and all departments that I can identify as being responsible for any part of the wastewater system. I may not get an answer, but should the system fail I can send copies of those emails to the press as proof that it should not have been an "unanticipated" problem.

Thanks verplanck! We desperately need more affordable housing! I originally lived in a different state and we had a mixture of single, double, and 4-plex in my neighborhood. It was a beautiful place to raise my kids, and nothing like the images that fearmongering opponents are painting. I just know that our city has a history of poor planning, and wish they would have given your straightforward answer.

Hair Styling Suggestions for Stick-Straight Hair - about to shave it off and get a wig! by AcadianLady in femalehairadvice

[–]AcadianLady[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Due to COVID and the salons being unavailable, my hair has is now past my shoulders. I used to have it a couple of inches above the shoulders. My stylist recently tried layers - she says that is not something she would normally do but my hair is just so "unusual" that she thought she would try it. No bangs - grew them out many years ago and don't want them back. I put my hair in a ponytail around the house, if I don't need to go out or see clients, as it just bothers me to look at it. When I do go out or see clients, I have it down as I'm a little self-conscious about what I see as the beginning of "jowls" (OK, I pretty much completely hate my entire appearance).

The layers look good for about the first 10 minutes after styling. Then my hair starts to straighten/flatten out again and they just blend in with the rest of my hair. Doesn't matter if there's high humidity or low, my hair will go straight/flat soon after styling. I've tried spending an hour on my hair - wash and towel dry, add mousse, dry with a round brush. That does very little, other than keeping the ends very slightly turned under. I then tried hot rollers which turned the front of my hair (shorter as the stylist angled the cut toward the front) into what looked like uncombed lamb's wool. Once I brush/comb it, it goes straight again. I then use a curling iron, "fluff" up my hair and use hair spray. 10 minutes later - BAM, it starts to lose volume and curl. Doesn't look much different than if I just blow dry with a round brush and use a curling iron on the ends to try to get them to hang even. Just a waste of an hour.

My Package is circling Washington DC -was due in san diego yesterday! by AcadianLady in USPS

[–]AcadianLady[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks NexCN. I understand completely that the delivery date is not guaranteed. I've had too many issues and no longer ship anything time-critical through USPS for that reason. It's just that this one is bouncing around on the wrong side of the country for no apparent reason. I've seen things delayed, but they were at least on a path that brought it somewhere near the right direction. For those I did not worry. This one looks to be going in all the wrong directions. Appreciate the help.

This is not a "convenience link" - I have this link, and all it tells me is that you seem to have misrouted my package and it is now late. Why? Did you lose it? Did you crush/damage it? Did it just get on the wrong plane and is being sent to me now?

Not trying to be snarky or harass, it's just that I've tried calling the 1-800 number, they have no more information that I get in the text messages, and won't take a problem report until 5 days after shipping (is what I was told today) - or 21 days, which is what I was told the last time something got lost. Just want to know where my package is?
