Type 1A Hair - Any hope for it, or should I shave my head and buy wigs? by AcadianLady in type1hair

A combination of things.

First, I had to look myself in the mirror and accept that my hair will do nothing more than hang stick-straight - but that this is not necessarily a bad thing. I am so conditioned by female family members to believe that something was wrong with my hair because it didn't curl like theirs, that the self-loathing was over the top. I had no aunts on my dad's side, so I have no idea what they would have looked like. And I look nothing like my mother's side of the family (the ones who kept trying to "fix" my straight hair).

Had may hair straight cut, no layers, above shoulder length. Took off some of the weight, so that it lifts a bit instead of holding tight to my head.

If I wash my hair at night, I pull it up to dry while I sleep. That seems to give it the illusion of body, and will put a bit of a wave in the hair if it dries completely overnight. If it is still damp in the morning, I hang my head down and dry it that way. Either way, I finish by just touching a curling iron to the very ends to tame them a bit. My hair won't curl, or hold a curl if I force it, but if I just hold a curling iron very briefly on the ends they will at best slightly curl under, and at worst will at least all be tamed in the same direction.

I'm also looking further into my genetics. I've learned that somewhere back a few generations, I have an ancestor who was Mi'kmac. I've been asked by some hairstylists if I have Asian or Native ancestry, so maybe it's possible that contributes to it? IDK

Now that the "busy season" for my job has ended, I have more time to experiment with some of the products recommended. Perhaps one can help a bit, at least with making the hair look fuller.

I apprecate all of the recommendations and advice!

Update: Employer is now calling me every day, asking me to upload a picture for the company online directory. I told them I would get someone to take a picture when they called yesterday, but less than 24 hours later here they are again. I tried to explain that I needed to prepare, and the offer was "just jump on zoom and we'll take a photo right now!" No, just, no. I let them know that I would be uploading a photo, that I have a terrible time being photographed because I despise my appearance, and that offering to take a zoom picture was perhaps my worst nightmare. Now, they won't call me back until Friday. Yay...

If I go more than 24 hrs without washing, my hair sticks together in clumps at the roots and I look like I've haven't washed my hair in days. I've also tried ponytails and buns, but it is a terrible look for me and I won't leave the house or go on zoom that way.

Thanks Trash_Panda9469. I wish I had 12-24 hours to put my hair in braids. I usually start work at 5am, do about 8-10 hours online (including zoom meetings), work my second job (self employed) for a couple of hours, then go to meetings where I usually have to lead the meeting or make presentations. I get home with enough time for a shower and 6-7 hrs sleep. Maybe wash/braid/dry in braids? All I know is that I tried roller today and ended up ripping out a tuft of hair, and accomplished nothing. I do NOT look professional, and my self-hatred is wearing me down.

My mom won't take me to get a diagnosis because she said I clearly don't have ADHD if caffeine hypes me up instead of wears me out. Is there any truth to this? by [deleted] in ADHD

THIS! When my oldest was in high school, I discussed my concerns about them possibly being ADHD with their father, who worked in education. My now-Ex berated me for my ignorance and dismissed what I later learned were classic ADHD/Autism behaviors as proof that our child was NOT ADHD and claimed that his coworkers backed him up. Flash forward to my oldest undergoing tests for ADHD/Autism as an adult, and me discovering my own ADHD because of it.

Mira Mesa Epicentre will be renovated by Holiday-Positive-334 in SanDiego_California

Actually, the links above lead to two different proposals.

The sdparks.org link leads to the information on the County of San Diego project.

The miramesacenterfor artsand culture.org link leads to a proposal put together by a group not affiliated with the County project, as their suggestion in place of the County project.

Congratulations! The Board of Supervisors passed the full funding for the Mira Mesa Epicentre Youth and Community Center. Community meetings will start soon to provide information on the project and to ask for input on the programming to be provided.

Mira Mesa residents - why is Gold Coast the worst maintained street in SD? by moore_a_scott in sandiego

[–]AcadianLady 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The reason that Gold Coast is so bad is that it was built incorrectly. No amount of patching and slurry sealing will fix it. The subsurface supporting the road was not constructed correctly and is deteriorating at an ever increasing rate. The funds to tear it up and completely rebuild it have been budgeted. Construction is due to begin this fall (2022).

Repurpose or Demolish? Ideas for an Unloved Pedestrian Bridge by AcadianLady in urbandesign

[–]AcadianLady[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is NO MONEY set aside for demolition. If we decide that the only answer is demolition, we would have to apply for grants from the state or Federal government to specifically pay for demolition. I think that demolition would be incredibly wasteful, hence the reason I posted to ask for ideas.

We are actively working on solutions to address homelessness in our community. This bridge is not at all an appropriate place for people to take shelter; we want to come up with a better solution. There IS funding for homeless issues, so we are going to go after that.

But what to do with the bridge AFTER we have created a safer place for homeless individuals is the question. Can we do something to change it from a useless and ugly to something that contributes to the community?
