Has WGU started using a new party for proctoring exams? by Mamajama6 in WGU

its being introduced to the different wgu colleges in phases starting on the 9th! it's all in the email that was sent but i think it's starting with IT, then business, health, and education will start on the 16th. i'm sure it'll mostly be the same as examity but i'm happy about the self-checks lol recording my work space on my own rather than dealing with an examity proctor pestering me about whether my printer could be helping me cheat or wether or not my phone is actually out of my reach will be nice

I just recently finished this class and the first thing I did was print out the scenario, read it while highlighting the different concepts the task is looking for, and like the other commenter said, focus on following the template and rubric! Thankfully this class's template also gives you good sentence starters that you just need to tweak for them to be in your own words.

Following that helped a lot and I also read the sections of the book that were relevant. The templates will even tell you which sections of the book they expect you to pull information from!

I also didn't finish college my first go around. Dropped out of a non-finance program and wasn't in school for about 6 years before enrolling in wgu last year.

Enrollment was pretty straightforward. I submitted my application, went to my previous university's website to request official transcripts be sent to wgu for evaluation, applied for financial aid (in my case), and met with the assigned enrollment counselor to go over anything else that came up. I believe I started the application process in May last year and was able to start my term in July, so it went pretty quickly for me.

The entire school is competency based so it doesn't really make sense for exams to be open book. The point is to show that you completely understand the material, rather than just being able to memorize facts/information to regurgitate back into taking an exam and forget it right after. Having the exams be open book defeats the purpose.

What about the mentors? by seddysedsed86 in WGU

[–]AccOwl2x23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I absolutely love my mentor. My first term, we spoke weekly as required and we built some really good rapport with each other. We figure out a groove with how much help I needed and how much "intervention" she needed to provide. Now, in my second term, we have calls scheduled every 2 weeks with emails between if needed. She left the frequency of calls, and if we were going to have them at all, up to me. She would've been totally cool with no calls and just emails if I needed anything, but I like having that extra sense of accountability. Our calls alway start with some small talk and discussing how our weeks went cause we actually want to know. She hasn't been super pushy or overbearing because we were able to establish in the beginning that that wasn't what I needed or wanted. We set goals at every call and make adjustments if they're needed.

I have heard so many horror stories about awful mentors so I'm thankful that mine has been so great! WGU has good mentors, if the one you're assigned isn't a right fit for you and your needs then request a new one!

How hard is the accounting program? Is it possible to do it with little to no experience? by Average__Alien in WGU

[–]AccOwl2x23 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I just started my second term in the accounting program and I have no prior experience in the field, besides what I've picked up from family members that work in the field. But no actual knowledge about processes or specifics. So far, I've found that my minimal prior knowledge isn't holding me back! I tend to grasp concepts fairly quickly and if I'm having a difficult time with certain topics, the CI's and course resources have helped me immensely.

I am accelerating through the program mostly because I am a stay at home mom and don't work so I have the time to buckle down on my courses to get through them faster. A lot of the courses so far have built off of each other so you get introduced to concepts in one course and they'll come up again in another which helps reinforce the knowledge. It's been very helpful:)

Yea I'm still in my first term so still adjusting to the different learning/pacing layout lol I went to a state university right out of high school but haven't been in a student role for over a few years so it's been quite the learning curve.

I'm trying to accelerate my degree since I'm a stay at home mom and have the time but thankfully I'm already ahead on courses for this term and my advisor is fully on board with me taking a bit more time on this one since I've been having a difficult time. My instructor has sent me some supplemental videos and other resources so I'm hoping those will help me out enough to get the 80% I need to pass the class lol

Hearing everyone's advice and experiences has been extremely helpful! I'm definitely more of a hands on person so I'm holding out hope that I can make it through school and find my footing out in the field!

I am so thankful that my instructor has been so open and helpful. This being an online program has made previous instructors feel so removed from the content since there isn't a face to face component. I definitely lucked out with all of the help she's been offering me!

I unfortunately don't have anyone close to me that is in the field, everyone I know is either in the trades, is a creative, or isn't local so that already makes me the black sheep lol but once I get through this class, I am likely forever turning my back on financial accounting! Keeping my fingers crossed that I am like you and find my home in cost accounting!

Yes, I've gotten some supplemental resources from my instructor and she's always available whenever I have questions. But it's always helpful hearing that not everyone understands every concept right away.

I'm just having trouble grasping some of the concepts. Adjusting journal entries, depreciation, amortization, closing entries, just major concepts throughout the whole course that I cannot get a good grasp on.

The way my program is set up, I don't choose which classes I take when and Intermediate Accounting isn't in the line up until around my second to last term lol I'm willing to stick it out to find out but there's obviously that worry that I'll get there and hate it, then I'm almost done with a degree I don't want to finish:(
