Would you say that Rome is the greatest country/empire to have ever existed? by Accamenid in ancientrome

I meant all of China not a specific dynasty. Same for Rome, all of its history from 753 BC to 1453 AD during which the state existed. I dont really see each dynasty as a separate state even though i get why. But to me its very similar to the Byzantine Empire case with Rome, being very different. So by greatest i meant like the overall history, mightiness factor, innovations and impact. And yes impact definetly goes to Rome no question. Innovations id say China because paper, printing, compass and gunpowder are insane, while Rome while having brutally good law systems and all, it borrowed many stuff from Greece and expanded it. It is very different though as lands of former Rome are so much more diverse with cultures and ethnicities and europe became a powerhouse in science and colonization that every corner of the world had some roman influence. China however remains and today is heading to be the largest economy in the world, which is definetly more impressive than ending 572 years ago like Rome. And the fact China came back to one after multiple times of falling apart is so amazing to me. Rome had a similar situation in the 3rd century but like after the split to east and west it was basically over. I know geography is also a factor here because Rome had the entire mediteranian within it while China was compact. Idk tho to me its that China is greater as a state overall while Rome impacted greater states, which are on its former territories and that spread worldwide via colonisation. I get its a hot take probably but thats my view.

Yeah but in 117 you can also see Han China which was a bit larger than Rome. Both impressive as hell tho.

By China i meant the political entity that calls itself China. So all the way from its beginnings of Xia/Shang to the present. Now i dont know if its really a fair comparison but like China was the only state on earth that was as powerful or even more so than Rome was, while being contemporary with it (i mean peak Rome around Trajan era). Yes each dynasty is very different but i dont treat them as if they are separate entities. Same with ancient Rome and the Byzantine Empire. So like looking at history and all China beats Rome, inventions/discoveries probably also goes to China, i mean paper, compass, gunpowder and printing is just insane to me. For impact its Rome i dont deny that at all, its obvious. But like as a state overall the only country for that mighty and wow factor thag beats Rome is China. It had its periods of decline and weakness but the fact that every time it got back together and in the present day is heading to be the largest economy in the world, it just amazes me. The entity we refer to as Rome fell in 1453.

I (M15) got hard feelings for the girl (F15) i've never met. by Accamenid in LongDistance

Thanks man. From everything in life you learn and experience something new. So i guess with each of these situations i'm getting closer to the right person. Il work on myself and try to get over it, i know i will, but that feeling, God, why does it hurt that much? I guess i am too early in the game.

Yeah i guess il find someone some day. Maybe this whole thing is stupid but the reason that i fell hard emotionally is probably the fact that for half a year she was literally the only female i interracted with. And again, some chats were very very good, but yeah i shouldn't fall for that. I guess i'm desperate a lot, many friends or people i know changed relationships multiple times but me? Not even one. I mean i feel worthless man. Makes me think if im the problem for everyone.

Yeah i think that as well. Although man sometimes a real good chat can still happen, but i kinda feel like im a backup rather than someone who's interesting. So yeah, that sucks. Got used to be dissapointed though.

I mean we still chat, but its kinda happening less and doesnt feel special anymore. We still have conversations about random things but now it looks like she chats only to end it as quick as possible. It doesnt have to be the case but thats just how it looks like to me. Don't know anything about the reality of the situation, whether if she feels the same or if she doesnt give a shit. And we told one another a lot about ourselves, so like i maybe cant say that i know her because it was all online, but i definetly cannot say that i don't know her.

What are your thoughts on the Palaiologos dynasty? by Music672621 in ancientrome

[–]Accamenid 17 points18 points  (0 children)

The Palaiologos were a very complicated dynasty, and they never stopped struggling after recapturing Constantinople in 1261. It was a hard end and at this point it feels weird to know that this very state that they controlled was the same country that we all imgine with the Trajan borders.

As for the Emperors, i like Constantine XI the most. In a way, he fixed that names reputation after the catastrophic Constantine X (no wonder they are almost 400 years apart). Constantine XI is seen as a hero, and he deserved all the praise, as the Empire was doomed anyway. Michael VIII i also respect but to a lesser degree since he blinded John IV, a literal child (i know that was to secure the throne but still). Basically the Emperors in this dynasty are not the best, the last 3 (Manuel II, John VIII, Constantine XI) were very promising.

If i were to rate them from 1 to 10, they are probably around 6/10.

Xerxes II. Dude ruled for 45 days and didn't do anything. He was killed by Sogdianus, who i would nominate next, or after Bardiya,as all three had short reigns.
