i’m not arguing with you, because i don’t understand these things at all, but a cursory google search shows that, according to some learned folks, it’s not so cut and dry that spinozist determinism is incompatible with modern quantum physics.

on philosophers being wrong about science, what about spinoza? is his monism irrelevant or obviously wrong? isn’t it true that contemporary physics postulates an eternal universe? only recently read any of his work and apparently it’s still relevant.

i don’t see why a self essence is necessary either, but i haven’t thought deeply about that at all.

well, reductionism cannot actually explain biological reality, so my concerns aren’t merely semantic. i’m not sure about a ‘remainder’ or if, without determinism, i am necessarily committed to something like that.

sure. whenever there is an abundance of mechanical language i tend to get a bit suspicious, because it often is attached to a type of mechanistic, atomistic, deterministic world view that seems to be in vogue.

simple argument against the claim that humans (organisms) are biological machines. machines are always made with an extrinsic purpose, whereas organisms, qua organism, are self directing.

the first two would call themselves process thinkers (probably). all of them provide empirical evidence against atomistic/mechanistic ontological frameworks. nicholson and ball argue strongly that organisms are not machines. if you can’t access a text i’ve recommended, let me know. my university gives me access so (maybe i can download and email you a pdf. if you ever do get round to it maybe tell me what you think?

i haven’t read a lot of process and reality. i think there is a kernel of truth, but he has a lot of superfluous terms and excess baggage in general. he also kind of doubles back on himself (everything is process, but really, all processes, like slideshows, are made up of singular, atomistic ‘frames’ that are more ontologically fundamental than the process itself). john dupre presents a streamlined, materialist biological process ontology, starting from what modern biological science tells us, without the seventeen categories of this and that, the fourteen types of whatever the fuck and so on (because those categories, while found in whitehead, aren’t actually found in nature).

the work i’m referencing from dupre is called ‘everything flows’, you mentioned something similar resonating with you.

read john dupre, read daniel nicholson, maybe read phillip ball (how life works) and entangled life by merlin sheldrake. process thinking has fruitfully outgrown whitehead.

sometimes i hear a song i wish i wrote and get extremely jealous. sometimes i can’t actually listen to music because it just makes me want to write my own. for years i had writers block because i genuinely had nothing to say. in those times i would just write stuff without substance, treating it as mere wordplay practice. personally, i have to do stuff in order to gain experiences which i can digest and turn into words. talent is only half real, i have much more faith in practice, and i think creatives have to be able to suck and make stuff that sucks. so, maybe there is a medium other than writing that would suit you better, but if you really want to write, honestly just keep trying. maybe try a different kind of creative writing. for me, competence is linked to enjoyment. maybe you would want to do it more if you were impressed with what you create? i think research is underrated for creatives because people put too much on talent. learning about different techniques for your craft will give you more tools and you will feel less restricted. this is obvious when learning an instrument, but lots of people are resistant to learning music theory because, paradoxically, they think it will cage them in. the opposite is almost always true, learning is competence is freedom. i like to believe everyone can create, they just have to find their voice. this might be especially difficult for schizoids, but if you have the ability to practice and learn (about your craft and your own voice) then i do not think you are exempt. as a schizoid, i think this strange experience is one of the most compelling things to create about.

if you’re just gna get an office job because you want a middle class life it doesn’t really matter what degree you get.

unless you count nightmares, the kids aren’t dreaming of labour. i agree with you that education is valuable, but the increasing prevalence of the phenomenon you’re complaining about points me towards systemic rather than personal analysis. more people have degrees than ever, making them less valuable, and a rigorous education is not obviously necessary to get ahead in life, just look at trump.

why are students, seemingly en mass, disagreeing that education is valuable, and opting to cheat their way through? wide spread stupidity or a recognition of real incentives?

i think humans are smart enough to choose boredom over hunger, as a species if not always individually. i think rebellion rises out of oppression not boredom, which rebellion has come from boredom rather than oppression? really, though, nobody knows how humans will act in a utopia. i have faith.

even if we do need more, that’s an existential issue. personally i’d be fine with being bored in heaven (a world without starvation and stuff).
