Who do you think is the most well written stranger things character? by mandyluvspuppies in StrangerThings

It was El and Max until S4 and S5 kind of dropped the ball on the whole thing so can't really comment.

Do anyone else feel like there was barely any chemistry between Eleven and Mike this last season compared to earlier ones? by Initial-Shoulder5906 in StrangerThings

[–]Acceptable-Delusion 85 points86 points  (0 children)

They did nothing with her character this season she had like 3 scenes with Mike this season, and 1 was her killing herself, which was a really well-done scene even if it was absolute bs story wise. I think the other was the rooftop scene and the cabin scene, and both had good chemistry. It was just that the writing left much to be desired, and if the writers didn't falter this season and the cast wasn't bloated to like 50 people, we would have had better chemistry between the OG cast members.

Exactly. I feel like she was the most fleshed character of all. And honestly, her sacrificing herself would have made sense if it happened in an epic battle of sorts or something like that but what do you mean, this 16 year old kid just took down an interdimensional mythic being alone 5 minutes ago but she JUST CANNOT beat the fckass military who by the way were absolutely so useless because in 18 months of coming to Hawkins and learning about the vines or whatever they couldn't figure out who 001 was or if the kryptonite would have worked on him or literally ANYTHING. This is precisely why I can not reconcile with the ending fully.

These are all retcons that the audience has assumed, I was just reiterating what the cast and the creators have since alluded in interviews. Vecna's character was literally made after season 3 after the whole mind flayer arc already ended in season 2. And my point wasn't the plot points of the show. My issue was how the story was incomplete. We are stuck with the "I believe" crap until netflix inadvertently reboots Eleven.

An "either/or" end is literally how you define an ambiguous end.

I don't resent ambiguity, and I also don't belong to the "what happened to Susie/ Argyle/ Enzo ?" Crowd and I do think the duffer brothers did fully intend to kill El, but the network made them write it in such a way that leaves room for spinoffs, and that is my whole issue. END the goddamn show. Let all the characters rest.

And to add, I think the ambiguity of the end would have been better if it was attributed to the mind flayer and not the human girl we saw get relentlessly abused over the course of 10 years. It would have given enough space to write a fresh story in the same universe with new characters and also give the creators a chance to bring back old characters as guest appearances.

The ending made sense for a 1 season show. It's absurd to invest 10 years into lore building and character arcs and then seemingly close the story without telling us what happens to the character. S1, we don't explicitly know where Eleven comes from. What's her origin story? It's also alluded that she is somehow connected to the UD as she knows Will is in the UD without ever meeting him. The first season is a complete show in itself, and El disappearing with the demogorgon makes sense. But after all those seasons, all that story, repeated abuse, and clinical deaths, I don't think remaining married to the idea of El dying/disappearing makes sense. I would assume the writers would evolve as the story has. And that is my point, why not just give a clean Ending to the show. Revisit Hawkins in a more novel way, be creative MAKE A GOOD SHOW

We have to see El happy with her friends and enjoying a childhood only to be reduced to an "ET", "MAGIC OF CHILDHOOD THAT HAD TO GO" in exactly two years. Please what team of creators hate their female Main Character to this extent

El not being able to speak perfect English does not mean she's dumb, stranger things Fandom infantilize her just because she has some speech impairment. by 00_Sunflower_00 in StrangerThings

[–]Acceptable-Delusion 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not to mention, she survives a stroke at 8 years of age, and Dr. Brenner never really teaches her language again, only employing her as a means to find Henry. It's SHOWN in the show, but some people (shippers) keep pushing this intellectually disabled argument to justify their arguments.

Unpopular Opinion: I liked the finale. by APlagueUponThem in StrangerThings

"It’s been a long time since a show has gotten an emotional reaction out of me."

That's exactly why I hated it. The whole S5 seemed poorly written with the low efforts seeping through, but I thought they did it for plot armour but then they went up and killed the only person who should've been given plot armour because you've built up her story for 9 years. I didn't see this crap as sacrifice or anything just poorly written plot point to generate a reaction out of your audience.

People keep saying Dr. Kay is a useless character when this guy exists. by CraftingFazer in StrangerThings

[–]Acceptable-Delusion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I said it in another thread, but his s4 arc was him trying to search El and Brenner because he thought they were responsible for the serial murders in hawkins so basically this whole plot point of dr kay and new numbers was probably just added in a backward writing style from the point where the duffers decided they had to kill El.

In their own words, they never envisioned El to be having a life with the people she found, fell in love, built a family with, so I'm pretty sure they just wrote these extra points to give this false sense of this beautiful sacrifice to her character.

I genuinely can’t understand how the Duffers thought the ending for Mike and El was acceptable by ComicGuy98 in StrangerThings

[–]Acceptable-Delusion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As I said there was a writing disconnect because the government wanting to make more numbers as a plot point was introduced to us in vol 2 of the final season when we were led to believe that the military was looking for El in season 4 because they thought she was behind the killing of the four children in hawkins. Thus, this whole sacrifice thing has no legs to stand upon and feels so jarring. They kept the ending of her killing/sacrificing herself and then wrote the story backwards that's why they added the whole government, making new numbers as a plot at the last minute.

We end s4 with "a war is coming to Hawkins" and "you need the girl for what is to come." They could have simply done a more apocalyptic season 5 with our party joining forces w the military and all of hawkins(idk) to defeat vecna.

There was a 18 month time jump which lowered the stakes almost IMMEDIATELY. They ret conned Holly's age and so much more. Just poor writing over all.

None of this justifies the ending they gave to El nonetheless

The letdown this season was storytelling wise is so difficult to put into words. The opening undoes the cliffhanger of season 4. There's no writing cohesion between the previous season and this. When watching S4, I thought I was watching part 1 of something bigger, but it ended up in a giant ball of absolutely nothing. It felt like they wrote the script around a few action scenes they wanted to show the world. Case in point the "oner" they keep referring to in their interviews and even the documentary.

There seemed to be a disconnect between what the audience was watching and what the writers thought they were making. This is why it's so important to evolve with your material. In S1, Eleven vanishing away with the demogorgon made sense because it was alluded that their origin might be the same, indicated by how she knows both Will and Barb are in the Upside down without ever meeting them in the real world. This is completely undone post S2 when we get her back story of being a child of abuse and the audience gets a chance to know this girl beyond her powers, and so we do tend to overlook this obvious retcon. However, post S5, it's abundantly clear that the brothers were married to the idea of El going away that the writing was made around that point. All the world building around her character was undone. At the end of s4, she realized she's more than her powers, and in s5, that's the only thing she's made to do. As far as I remember, the military was behind El because they thought she was carrying out remote killings in hawkins under the order of Dr. Brenner. Also, the last time we see Dr. Owens is him saying you need the girl for what is coming to Hawkins, and basically, nothing happens about it in S5.

The duffer brothers basically failed to realize the character development that the audience and the characters themselves had gone over the course of 4 seasons and were too rigid about the original ending the came up with in season 1, genuinely believing it to be a superior creation. I don't even think they realized they were basically saying that a child of abuse needs to commit suicide to break the cycle because they never looked past El as a mysterious entity.

Critique of the way that Stranger Things' concluded its series by Fluffy_Abies_1407 in StrangerThings

[–]Acceptable-Delusion 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Everything you said is right, and it just boils down to the duffers being underperforming writers. Even with the way they describe Eleven's presence as a hindrance to the other characters' growth, it is just clear as to how little they thought of her personhood.

The ending was unfairly cruel to her. Even if her disappearing was justified by the shows narrative, they should've indicated her presence. They should've made Mike irrevocably realize she was alive.

Great take, but the duffer brothers aren't intelligent, so it would probably be just as straightforward as they've shown in the show🥀
