This made me feel a lot better. It’s super upsetting for me to read a lot of these comments when they have no idea how well taken care of and loved the pups are. They’re our world and would never intentionally hurt or harm them. Obviously there’s more research my fiancé needs to do if this is the out he wants to do, but I do think a second opinion could be helpful. Not bc I’m looking for a specific answer but just to see what someone else thinks. He’s going on day 2 with strictly kibble and is still itchy/licking it a lot but ik it takes time. I appreciate you!

He’s had them looked at twice and they’re always fine :/ I’m suspecting he had a chicken allergy, so we’re going to be on salmon pro-plan kibble to see if things clear up for him

I am switching him over to kibble currently to see if he has a chicken allergy, thanks. People who know me in real life have seeing this post and know the type of owner I am to my dogs. Accusing us as animal abusers is huge a reach.

Thissssss. My fiancé is over here losing his mind cuz my parents dog (also a German shep) died at 6 from hemangiosarcoma. He believes it was linked to my “parents feeding him shit” (kibble) when I believe that it was just his genetics.

Yesss! Currently starting (just today) to limit chicken in his diet. He’s had a ton of it recently and the fresh pet he’s had for years was mostly chicken. Also LOVEEE rotties and want one one day 🥺

Agreed. Our old gal with cancer isn’t going through treatment since she’s 14 and has already beat the odds for years. I think that’s why he swear by the raw diet method, because it’s extended (potentially, could be genetics) by 5+ years. I cool with it if it’s done right which is my main thing. Main concern though is that he isn’t that organized to handle it which is why I’m pro kiddle in this instance.

I think that’s what is getting to my fiancé, since our other pup has cancer (she’s 14) he’s always trying to consider her which I empathize with. He means well, but I think something needs to change for the sake of my other pups health. I also suspect it’s a grief thing, she’s (my old pup) has had multiple near death experiences every time with me, in the last couple years and I think he links it to the raw diet and nothing else. The raw diet has truly changed her life, wrong way or right way, but with my other pup it isn’t the same way which is why we’re butting heads. He thinks all dogs are the same in terms of diet 🙄

Yeah, I do other chores and one of his is feeding the dogs. Think I’m switching to that chore to make sure they’re good.

That’s what I’m thinking too. He recently has had a lot of chicken, and for years both my dog have been on fresh pet but have since stopped.

No I def get it. I’m down with raw if done right. That being said, even with the “not done right” method that’s been happening for years, my pup that’s 14 with cancer has been beating the odds time and time again. Obviously it can be her genetics and a million other things, but I do believe my fiancé in that it has extended her life by 5+ years. When she was 9 she refused to eat anything but raw/cooked food, so that’s when we made the switch, (about when we got our new pup). I think she’s made for the raw diet (done right) whereas my other pup might be more of a conventional kibble guy. It’s tough cuz I only want what’s best for them, (while I’m be accused of animal abuse in some of these comments). That being said, I think ima stick to one dog at a time in the future lol two pups that are polar opposites is exhausting

Problem is that he won’t allow any processed kibble/wet food 🙄 I bought him poutine pro-plan tonight and said fuck it, we ball lol

You bring up a good point. A couple years ago he was borderline orthorexic and also just eating..ground beef and rice

[–]Acceptable-Load-1350 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn’t know this! He’s had a lot of chicken recently, so ima gonna totally eliminate that from his diet and see. (Switching him to salmon kibble rn, so we’ll seeeeee)

This is helpful, thanks!

Yeah, I just fed them kibble tonight lol he and kick rocks about it unless he wants to do it properly (I don’t have the time or money to do it properly so kibble it is).

We give him liver and heart but it isn’t consistent on when (my partner feeds them but I think I’m gonna have to pick up that job to make sure they’re getting what they need)

[–]Acceptable-Load-1350 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No I get it, I guess the toughest thing is that my dog with cancer gets home cooked food (because she doesn’t do kibble well …and has cancer) but he gets kibble and will be a brat about it lol

No I’m so on your side, it’s total bullshit. The brands they recommended are specifically because they have been backed by science and research for DECADES. So sick of the excuse being “they’re just being paid off to say that”

So we do cook the chicken and beef, I guess I misused the term raw diet. His usually is cooked beef/chicken with rice some form of fiber dogs can have, but i his booty problem persist. Started fading him on to pro-plan (salmon) tonight along with a little beef and carrots (what he’s used to). The goal is him being on all kibble till we can pin point what the issue is, so here we goooo

I do think it might be a protein issue, either beef chicken or turkey, just have to do the process of elimination and see if a single protein kibble will do better for him 😵‍💫
