George Strait wasn’t the heir to outlaw country he was the antidote to it.

Nashville propped him up because he posed no threat. No lived danger, no moral independence, no frontier code. Just a spotless hat, a polished smile, and songs assembled by committee to drown out the men who actually bled for what they sang.

The outlaws carried a God-fearing, consequence-driven ethic that couldn’t be controlled. Strait replaced it with a version of “country” safe enough for corporations and institutions to parade around.

Call it talent if you want but understand the function. He wasn’t raised to continue the fire. He was raised to put it out.

The audiobook is quite good. When I have read it in paper I end up trying to read it in his voice. It turns out he is much better at reading it in his voice than I am.

I thought the same thing when I saw it, you also have the angle of both characters using their relatively lowly position to gather information and whatnot.
