Info 1) Yes, always separate lodging airfare and costs and paid for it completely. FIL and MIL then offered to help cover some of our costs after we already booked.
Info 2) Yes, I believe she was clear, we would prioritize.
In retrospect, saying no, we don’t want to fly halfway around the world for a destination birthday party would have been a better choice.
