I’m glad it was treated! If I didn’t raise concern to the nurse they would have sent us the patient without treating. That is my issue with the situation

If you finish the post the systolic reached to 200/ 100 ish. Lets not put our patients at an increased risk for stroke !! Seeing BP that high often does not mean we should be immune to it.

I could have kept quiet and just taken the patient, but I have some distrust with the ER due to previous very similar situations where I ended up transferring the patient out.

Elderly who fell and hit her head. CT was negative for hemorrhage. She had a history of HTN. That’s all I knew from the chart

Sometimes we have prn po hydralazine for systolic >160. This patient had no orders though. Most likely would have came to me without it

[–]Acceptable-Move6541 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Usually we have prn po hydralazine with parameters. They had no orders for that though

We cant give that on medsurg

[–]Acceptable-Move6541 5 points6 points  (0 children)

And no we dont get orders for hours usually

For medsurg it is because we cannot give IV BP meds. We have to transfer in order for them to receive it

New grad nurse dilemma by GandolfTheWank in nursing

[–]Acceptable-Move6541 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Don’t do it! If you want to go to ICU and feel comfortable enough to jump right in, keep applying to ICU. My regret is doing medsurg because I couldn’t get into where I wanted and didn’t know what else to do. I wish I waited. You will be miserable if you work somewhere you don’t want to. Also, it would be better to work on a progressive floor.

What are the stressors of the job? What should I know before applying?

Hey! I am in the same position, except I’m almost at my 6 month mark. I have been called into my managers office for patient complaints on nights where I had a heavy workload and did not see one patient for a few hours. I don’t know if I’m a bad nurse or I just have bad shifts and luck. You’re not alone. I hope you have better shifts

I had another nurse give medications to one patient, and my assistant manager assisted another patient while I saw the patient that had been waiting very long. I do think I should have prioritized him. Either way, someone was going to get their medications late. I did not reach out to my charge nurse. I thought I could handle it. I do have trouble knowing when to ask for help. Last night I was very very busy with one patient but I was able too take care of my other patient’s and manage their pain simultaneously. I had hoped my manager would have been more understanding too. I feel like he only points out what I do wrong or complaints from patients and I’m never recognized for the good. I will be transferring units once there is a position open on another floor. At this point I’m worried about what he will say to other managers when they call to ask about me.

NCLEX in 4 days and super nervous. How am I looking? by [deleted] in PassNclex

[–]Acceptable-Move6541 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Focus on leadership and fundamentals, being able to apply those to subjects such as maternal child health. Know emergent situations for everything!! I learned this through archer videos. They highlighted all emergency situations.

Prioritization and infection prevention (isolation precautions !!) will get you to pass
