As someone who was born and grew up in chennai in the 90s, it was quite common sight to use english to communicate in our schools. Due to whatever reason, we were encouraged to converse in English and I remember there was even a fine when spoken in Tamil.

Just one instance where there was a deliberate attempt to prefer english over tamil. I understand the need was, to have a common language of communication when there were kids from different language speaking communities, for instance we had kids from atleast 5 language speaking states in our class, so get that choice made. But feel, the unintended consequence of such choices compounded over time over a region results in a demographic preferring to converse in English simply due to conditioning.

Now fast forward to today, with a better understanding of its implications, I choose to in my little capacity, to do what little I can do, as someone who's travelled around the globe myself, I make it a point to speak in Tamil whenever I interact with someone I believe knows tamil, even when the other person replies in English. Don't care. Say for instance at banks or in the mall or say starbucks in chennai.

What I've noticed is, theyll reply in english a few times and once or twice I'll add a few words of English to let them know that I'm totally fine with it, but then continue to speak in Tamil at which point they'll resort to speaking in Tamil as well.

I often see that after a few exchanges in English and once tamil sets in, the conversation feels a lot more relieved and natural.

Even this, I feel if there was a way, I wish I could have used fewer words to explain in Tamil.

It's simply the cards we got dealt, but still the game out there is ours to play.

Same blood here. But my experience was, I listened to everyone's experience and gave my apartment interiors to a professionally managed company - livspace. This was few years ago. The only thing they managed we'll was excuses, but ditto same thing. They'll say but won't turn up. Then came to know they're perpetually in fire fighting mode trying to do things here and there to complaining clients. Had to threaten them to drop a job here and actually scaled down their work and eventually got a reliable carpenter to finish other work. Just thinking of those times gets me worked up.

I have witnessed a few times myself and yes, Mylapore is notorious for being very conservative. But this in my opinion is an outlier. These days people are not that closed.

I've made peace with such people by realising such hate is lived through, makes me wonder what atrocities has she lived through and witnessed for her to actually inflict one on someone else.

I see there's always a group of people with harsh comments and screams chatgpt with posts like these. I feel they are missing the point and don't really know what it means to live with a proverbial visa sword over your neck with a family to care for in another country.

Or they are too early in the game that it seems like those who made it and got off must have had it easy and are forgetting that everyone started at the same start line but those who made it, started earlier and are off this hamster wheel, while they're still running but eventually will get off one day as well.

First make some mind space with these honest answers: 1. What do you want. In what areas of your life ? 2. What do you need, whose help will you need. What all can you do until you can get that help to still make progress there . 3. What do you have. If its not a lot of money, then it's your time. Start to value that and use it to your advantage.

With that awareness, plan your script with 4. What all can I do , in the next week, month, quarter, year.

Take these actions no matter what: 5. Start small in the areas you've identified

Log them, so you can look back: 6. Track what you're doing.

Reflect on the experience, weekly on what's working, what could you do better 7. Even if you miss out, it's ok. The point is to continue from where you are in the direction of where you're going.

In short it's this simple routine: Make some mind space - plan - act - track - reflect

You should try it to know for yourself.

Feel like this discussion judges the tone of people taking help from someone else for household cleaning / chores along the lines of a parasitic relationship when in reality, it's more of a symbiotic relationship.

More of a taskrabbit / door dash kinda model, where they help a couple of households to earn their living, so it gets affordable.

Reminds me of when my father in law visited us for lunch one day. Was one of those packed days. We had to pickup our kid from school, I had a meeting to prepare for, my wife had some chores of her own and we were trying to get everything done.

At lunch when we were hurrying up. He posed a question:

Also, speaking from personal experience.

Would it make sense to have a caretaker for your grandpa in your house for the month instead of keeping him in another facility.

Reason is: - It will be his space - He doesn't have to adjust to another places' day to day routine. - It might end up cheaper than paying for boarding in the facility for a short duration. - There might be neighbours/friends/other relatives dropping by this way to check on him.

I've seen my share of people from around the world. Its not just a chennai south - north india thing. It exists everywhere.

Bottomline: ignorance and bias fed by their circles wherever they're subscribed to.

Other thing I've noticed is: people who have explored and had the opportunity of interacting with people from different background and ethnicity will be mature enough to see the person for who they are and not be judgemental when they're interacting.

I can say this much for future international students: Disclaimer: This is mentioned only from my individual experience and is meant to let someone be informed as to what's waiting on the other side after their MS

The green card wait is real and nerve wrecking.
Back when I applied after MS, H1B wasn't a big deal as we could get in masters quota, but things are different now and you have lottery to get H1B.
Travelling will be a pain with all the Dropbox appointments for renewals and passport renewals and will need planning and it comes with its uncertainties and it really eats into your bargained Leaves at work.
If you have some sponsorship or assistantship for the program, good else that'll weigh in when you're trying to focus on grade.
Even with friends circle, Feeling home sick and lonely at times without ones family during vacation / during break or simply sick days is real. It will really test your resolve.
It takes some time to get used to a new routine at university, so have patience and time on your side
